Renowned poet Mary Jo Salter, whose command of verse forms and high intelligence is universally acknowledged, selects the poems for the 2024 edition of The Best American Poetry, “a ‘best’ anthology that really lives up to its title” (Chicago Tribune).

The Best American Poetry series has been “one of the mainstays of the poetry publication world” (Academy of American Poets) since 1988. Each volume presents a curated selection of the year’s most brilliant, striking, and innovative poems, with comments from the poets themselves offering unique insight into their work.

Here, guest editor Mary Jo Salter, whose own poems display a sublime wit “driven by a compulsion to confront the inexplicable” (James Longenbach), has picked seventy-five poems that capture the dynamism of American poetry today. The series and guest editors contribute valuable introductory essays that assess the current state of American poetry, and this year’s edition is certain to capture the attention of both Best American Poetry loyalists and newcomers to the most important poetry anthology of our time.

Title: Hard and good
Review: A blessing it is to have such an anthology, making it so easy to flip through those few poems selected from thousands. Although I feel sorry for all the rejected ones, most of which didn't deserve their rejection, but life is cruel. I connected with the poems of Omotara James, Amit Majmudar and especially Brandel France de Bravo. She made me remember the laundromats in my own life. Never considered their power in the hands of a poet.

Title: I love the titles and themes of these poems
Review: The poem titles and themes are the best aspects of this poetry collection. I love the poem "Existential Elegy" because of the clever use of assonance in the title This poem makes me ponder the meaning of my existence too. "Fast Track: Beijing, Montana, Harlem" has a title that interests me, because these three places I have never visited. I love reading the connection the author has with two daughters living in such faraway places. I love the poem "Miasma" is a great poem, because now I can add the word miasma to my vocabulary as a synonym for the word stench. I could also relate to the fear of the COVID epidemic. in the poem. The Life of Tu Fu" is thought provoking. There is a reference to the five virtues of a chicken. This is a theme I have never thought of before. "Peahi Light" is a poem that stands for me because I am from Hawaii. Peahi means wave in Hawaiian, and Peahi is also the north shore of Maui. I am inspired to continue to write my own poetry because of this book.

Title: Something for Everyone
Review: I find it so interesting how some poems capture your interest right away and some don’t. I don’t have enough experience with poetry to know the ins and outs of how each poem in this anthology was written, but there were definitely some that I loved. There’s some weird ones in here, too, ones that leave you scratching your head. There are a few that seem to be stream of consciousness about rather mundane things, and I found that I didn’t connect with those as much. There are a wide variety of poems here, so there’s something for everyone. I enjoyed making my way through this anthology.

Title: A Non-Poetry Reader’s Experience: The Best American Poetry 2024
Review: I have to preface this by saying I don’t read poetry. In school, I always hated the poetry units. But, as I've gotten older, I’ve found myself enjoying poems here and there scattered about the internet. So I thought I’d give this one a try. It must have something I like in it. Something that speaks to me—right? This book is one of those books that has to be savored, it can’t be devoured in one or two sittings like most books I read. (At least by someone like me, who isn’t used to reading poetry.) This book has work I really enjoyed, and some I didn’t. It had poems that were easy to decipher, and others that weren’t. I even had to look up a few words, but that’s great because I was looking for something new. Something different from my normal reads. I wanted something that would give my brain a workout, and The Best American Poetry 2024 did just that. There is a huge variety of poems in this volume, and I’m certain there is something for everyone in it. I haven’t found my favorite poem in it yet, but Mary Jo Salter’s intro endeared me to her. Her intro convinced me that there would be something in the book that would speak to me louder than the others, and I can’t wait to find it. I read a digital ARC of this book for review. Thank you to NetGalley and Scribner for providing me with this ebook.

Title: A must for any poetry fan
Review: A wonderful collection! The Best American Poetry 2024 collection featured a vast variety of poems, not only in terms of their styles, theming and length but also in terms of the poets who wrote them. This gave me the opportunity to read pieces I wouldn't normally, and to discover new styles. My favorite part of this collection is the author bios and insights at the end. Some poems had me compelled to turn to the end to hear more about who the poet who wrote it is, and why they did.A must for any poetry fan.

Review: The choices of poems this year are of an exceptionally high quality. I came away from each poem having gained something— both as a reader and a writer. This year’s choices of poems are great for both the advanced and beginner to poetry because they each combine skillfully sound & meaning. They also contain many beautiful word choices that are fresh and precise. It was a delight to read. This book is a keeper, and I’ll be going back to it again and again for ideas.
