Medical treatment for ADHD fails much too often - not because of the drugs themselves, but how they are given. New ADHD Medication Rules - Brain Science & Common Sense shows that patients can react very differently to ADHD prescriptions, resulting in missed diagnoses, imbalanced treatment and over or under medication. In the only audiobook of its kind, Dr. Charles Parker clearly explains how this happens and how improved communication with professionals can dramatically improve treatment using available methods assembled from clinical experience and laboratory research.

Title: Important Book on an Important Subject
Review: There are plenty of important concepts in this book. Relating to ADHD itself, Dr Parker's insights into different types of ADHD symptoms, as he defines them, is eye-opening and, I believe, is "required reading" for everyone in the field. His contention is that symptoms which are functionally different must be addressed differently. His description of "Thinking Without Acting", which he calls the most prevalent subset of ADHD and the most overlooked, is itself worth the price of the book.Regarding medications: some of the most important concepts he deals with or introduces are the expected duration of effectiveness (defining and monitoring), and the effects of allergies and metabolism on medications. His explanations of drug interactions is the clearest and most informative I have seen in a book whose target audience includes (but is not limited to) the lay reader. For ADHD medications to be optimally effective as well as safe, the patient and the prescribing doctor must take into account a number of (for the most part) simple concepts, and they must do so with patience and perseverance. Dr Parker's zeal to spread this message is fueled by the fact that neither patients nor prescribers tend to "follow the rules", with the result of much unnecessary suffering. This is an important book for everyone impacted by ADHD to read and understand.

Title: There's lots of good stuff inside this book
Review: Dr. Charles Parker understands ADHD from a sophisticated psychopharmacological point of view and writes about it in a refreshing down to earth way. Very readable, as if he wrote this for you. His passion for explaining details is therapeutic in its own way. Invaluable information. Written with such enthusiasm for the professional and the patient. He talks about the stuff that happens outside the exam room, treating ADHD is much more then taking medication. One point Dr Parker emphasizes the importance of being aware of individual metabolisms. He explains the importance of protein, especially breakfast, for the ADHD brain. For those who know ADHD isn't only about behavior - this is a great book for you.And if you or your child have ADHD and you don't know about the 'feelings' that accompany ADHD - this is a GREAT book for you. New ADHD Medication Rules opens a window with a holistic view.

Title: Good, specific medication guidelines
Review: I would have rated it higher--but it was repetitive at times, and needs a different editor. :)So often ADHD medication is prescribed without guidelines for specific results. Parker's book gives clear goals that any titration logs should use. What does "too much" medication look like? What about "not enough?" What foods, habits, and other medications can interfere with the results? It's really worthwhile to become an *expert* on these things--if you have ADHD, your child has a 30% chance of having it too. If you're like me, and in a marriage where you BOTH have ADHD, your kids EACH have a 50-50 shot. Heck, even if they don't get the actual condition, they'll pick up our ADHD habits as completely normal if we don't manage our symptoms well. Take the time to become a medication expert. Add this book to your ADHD library.

Title: If You Have Ever Struggled With "Habituation" to Stimulant Medication...
Review: I chose the above title because it was this very issue that had caused me immeasurable suffering before reading New ADHD Medication Rules: Brain Science & Common Sense by Dr. Charles Parker. I was so moved by his understanding that I began working with him to address my ADHD medication issues. According to every prescriber I have worked with, the assumption was that if the stimulant medication I took became less effective over time, it was because I was "habituating" on it - a dangerous sign that set off loud alarms of addiction and drug dependence.I then found a clinic that prescribed on a mg / kg basis (higher doses for adults than for children based on body weight), which led to a disastrous rise in my dosage to the point where I lost my mind and nearly my life. What makes this so charged and challenging is that stimulant medication can be addictive and dangerous (even deadly in some cases). But knee-jerk claims of habituation are often false according to Dr. Parker. He lays out a very compelling case which, at its core, states that medication is metabolized like everything else we ingest. And if there are problems with digestion (food allergies being among the more prevalent factors), there will be problems efficiently metabolizing one's stimulant medication. One of the signs that this is so is...wait for it...finding that the medication becomes less effective over time. There are many, many other factors involved in the failure to adequately metabolize one's medication, and these must be addressed on an individual basis, through observation and a wide variety of diagnostic tests and methods. There is no magic bullet here: Just science, attention to one's individual experience and great communication between helper and "helpee".If you are a person with ADHD who has found that stimulant medication has been effective for you but has now become increasingly problematic, I urge you to not only buy this book, but see Dr. Parker in Virginia Beach, Va. I live in Massachusetts and found that the distance was a small impediment compared to the reward of what I would characterize as nothing short of regaining my life.If that's not possible, then buy his book, read it, and begin the process of finding an open-minded prescriber who wants to learn more about how to better serve the people they spent all that money on education to be able to serve. And it goes without saying that if you are a professional in the field, we who have found stimulant medication to be beneficial but problematic, NEED you to read it, share it and join in the conversation Dr. Parker has initiated. If you want to correspond with me directly I can be reached at [email protected]. Hope to hear from you.

Review: When I watch Dr Parker on U Tube and hear his take on ADHD it all makes so much sense !I would recommend this book to professionals and anyone with an interest in ADHD.We all need to be looking at the way medications travel through the body before it gets (if it gets,) to the brain ,and the effect these meds have (or lack of effect ) and why !Lets all get on board so we can help as many people as possible who suffer needlessly all because some peoples ego's prevent them from working with others who are further down the road. What if you had ADHD and your life was dysfunctional wouldn't you want the professionals to share what they know to improve your diagnostic process and help you to live a more fulfilled life.I would certainly hope so !

Review: ITs fairly good book about ADHD medication however there are some wrong info.Vitamin C should be used with ADHD medictaion because it reduces the effect greatly but in the book it reccomends to have a good breakfast with berry smoothie (which has tons of VitaminC in it). Just search it up.

Review: The information is presented in an understable language and some terms are defined. Offers helpful advice for those that are considering a diagnosis however it doesn't offer any references to the newly found imaging techniques (SPECT) that are supposed to help with an ADHD diagnosis. For experienced ADHD'ers looking for the new evidence and research on ADHD this is not a helpful book. I thought it would be longer as well.
