The secrets to persuading anyone, at work and in life, from a top communication strategist.

In the post-fact, deeply divided world we live in, true persuasion is rare. Engaging with people holding differing opinions is rarer still. But for progress to take place, persuasion must happen. Whether it's convincing an employer you are right for the job, a customer that your product is the best, or your closed-minded uncle that good people can disagree, it takes the art - and science - of persuasion to move forward.

So, how do you change someone's mind - or at least advance the conversation - when everyone is entrenched in their own points of view? Communication expert Lee Hartley Carter has spent nearly 20 years advising and helping the world's most well-known companies do just that.

Among the counterintuitive secrets you'll learn:

It's not enough to understand the person you're talking to - you must truly empathize with them (yes, even them).Logic alone doesn't work. Stories and emotions are what move us most. When communicating in a crisis, our first instinct is almost always wrong.

Filled with deeply researched insights into how we make up - and change - our minds, as well as colorful real-world examples and actionable recommendations, Persuasion will help you hone your message and craft your narrative in order to get heard and get results.

Title: A Master's Degree in One Book
Review: From the individual wishing to persuasively engage a person who has opposite political views to the small business or major corporation needing to communicate a powerful positioning message despite many factors standing in their way…this book is truly a masterpiece; both on understanding the whys and - most importantly - the how-to’s.As a business, your brand is much less about what you wish it to be and much more about what the marketplace believes it is. The same with you personally as a leader, an employee, a family member, or a neighbor. Thus, anyone looking to be seen in such a way that would create a benevolent context for their success would be well-advised to immerse themselves in the pages of this book, underline, highlight, and take notes…and then go through the exercise the author so generously provides.Take special note of the parts in the book where she cites positive and negative examples of certain principles and then shows how the situation could’ve been handled more effectively in order to optimize the results. While I’m tempted to point out all the numerous benefits to your business (and to your personal life) through making a study of this book, I’ll just hope that what is written above is “persuasive" enough for you to purchase it and experience it for yourself. The book will also make a terrific gift for those in your life you’d like to equip with a unique advantage.

Title: How to make the case for what really matters to you
Review: I tell everyone about this book. Carter does a great job of explaining her process of research, communication, and strategy. I have used her exercises for my own personal and work projects— to help me make a clearer, more compelling case for what I believe needs to happen. She teaches us about vision and strategy and connecting with audiences.

Title: Pretty good. Too many cliche topics.
Review: First of all, I really like watching Lee on TV when she does her analysis of what people think when using the dial. It’s very engaging and entertaining. Overall, the book was ok. I did struggle with a few areas that seemed very cliche like being authentic and show empathy. Yes, things that I know to do. I did like the area where she discusses that persuading people is by having them know a little tidbit vs information overload to persuade them. That was good info. I was a bit put off at the story where she writes about how all of these men/clients were hitting on her because she’s a beautiful blonde (paraphrasing). Her team was upset about it and she acknowledged to them that she felt uncomfortable about it because she’s so beautiful. I translated it as “I’m sorry I’m so gorgeous that men can’t help themselves. Too bad everyone can’t be a pretty as me.” That story could have been left out or reworded differently in my opinion. I am glad she didn’t use a ghost writer like many TV personalities do on Fox. The tone and rhythm of her writing was in the way she speaks which is nice. I think this book will be good for younger people entering the workforce or if you are needing to reinforce concepts you’ve already read about or heard. Some of the exercises in the back were good (some were just ok and too basic) but I don’t like writing in books. I wish there were online templates to download. There were no grammatical errors but in this book which I found refreshing. She took the time to edit and proof.

Title: Comprehensive Approach to Creating Change
Review: I teach the psychology of persuasion for a living and found Lee's book to be a great resource. Much like Frank Luntz, she takes a methodical, research based approach to the very words we use to move people to action. I like her focus on "it's not what we say, it's what other people here."Lee gives a comprehensive approach to creating change. I suggest reading the book then going back to work on a specific change goal you have using Lee's approach. I will be doing so because I know this; even though we're in similar fields there's always room for improvement. Thanks for creating such a great resource Lee!

Title: A MUST READ IN TODAY'S WORLD
Review: This book offers an approachable opportunity to reassess how you handle life, business and politics through Persuasion. Lee Hartley Carter creates a supportive road map to ensure you are focusing your energy towards your objective. The book lays out the foundation for where and how you should start the process and makes the journey of persuasion digestible. While innately structured, the process of achieving your objective with empathy, connection and your individual story allows room for fluidity and makes the entire exercise feel attainable. I found the book a must read for life and business in today’s world of spin, social media and polarizing opinions.Highly recommend.

Title: Good techniques but liberally slanted examples
Review: Wish I could split the stars! I'd give this book 4-5 stars for the techniques she describes but 1 star because many of her examples view the conservative as the "hater" in the discussion and the liberal point of view as the one worthy of persuasion. I didn't realize she was so liberal in her views. I respect her right to her beliefs but she could have written a 5-star book if she hadn't revealed her biases.

Review: Interesting because it clarifies communciation strategy in a conceptual as well as practical way. Up to you to use the insights for good or not. There is no appeal in the book to use these powers in a way that benefits our common future.
