The Sittaford Mystery is Dame Agatha at her most intriguing, as a séance in a snowbound house predicts a particularly grisly murder.

In a remote house in the middle of Dartmoor, six shadowy figures huddle around a table for a seance. Tension rises as the spirits spell out a chilling message: "Captain Trevelyan . . . dead . . . murder."

Is this black magic or simply a macabre joke? The only way to be certain is to locate Captain Trevelyan. Unfortunately, his home is six miles away and, with snowdrifts blocking the roads, someone will have to make the journey on foot. . . .

Title: Twisty
Review: Didn't see the ending coming, but should have. Lots of suspects and added characters thrown in. Very satisfying story. Very entertaining.

Title: A nice break from the routine for Agatha
Review: This one was a nice break in routine from Agatha, skipping Poirot or Marple, etc and instead being a stand-alone novel. I really enjoyed this one. Maybe not TOP SHELF Agatha, but still very good.

Title: Christie at the top of her game
Review: At the time Agatha Christie died, I was sure that I had read everything she had published. Fortunately, that wasn't true and I'm still making discoveries here and there. THE SITTAFORD MYSTERY embodies the best of Christie's storytelling powers though it's not one of her better known books. It's a one-off, not one of her popular series, but no one will miss Poirot or Miss Marple. It's worth noting that this was also previously published as "Murder at Hazelmoor." Since titles should be important and appropriate pointers to a story's heart, it's worth noting that the dichotomy is explained by the fact that the action seems to simultaneously take place in two places, even though there is only one dead body. Up in a remote village atop a bluff in the moor region, Sittaford, neighbors gather during a snowstorm to amuse themselves. Someone suggests a séance, though few really take it seriously. At first. Then the message that no one expects comes knocking through, that the landlord of the house, who is wintering 6 miles away down in a real town, at Hazelmoor, has been murdered. His old military pal leaves the party to investigate, even though it means walking a couple of hours in the snow. Indeed, he finds the body, obviously murdered, and the coroner puts the time at approximately the moment the "spirit message" was delivered up at Sittaford. Enter the sensible police inspector. And then, enter the bright young fiancé of the silly young man the Inspector arrests for the murder, who wants to save him. And, a journalist hoping to crack a big story. Soon, everyone is sleuthing and ferreting out each other's secrets. It's a riot. Christie has populated the two towns with delightful characters. Her wit is in full force. The plot twists and red herrings abound. She has created an airtight world between the two places and says some smart things about living in a tiny remote village. She captures England circa 1931 nicely, the mood still recovering from World War I and grappling with modern times.

Title: Winter Murder
Review: What a fun story. I like most of Christie's stand alone books. Emily is adorable. I love how she managed to get herself information and solve the crime by being herself. I too think she was throwing herself away on Jim, but ah well. I liked Inspector Narracott a lot.

Title: Unexpected, but not plausible.
Review: It’s not one of the best books of Agatha Christie, in my opinion. First of all, we don’t have Poirot or Miss Marple, that can deliver, by themselves, entertainment. As a “private investigator” there’s one charming and independent young lady, in love with the accused murderer, which is very common in Christie’s work. That’s the second problem – I’m so tired of this type of character... so audacious, and loyal, etc... As a positive point, the plot is very intricated, and the murderer is very unexpected. The table-turning séance is particularly intriguing. The third and last problem (and it’s huge) is that the solution of the crime is not plausible – in fact, we can’t truly believe that that particular person killed the victim (no motive whatsoever), and this spoils the clímax. So, the book is still interesting for people who really appreciate Agatha Christie – like me, but if you're starting to read her books, I’d strongly advise that you start with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Murder at Orient Express.

Title: Another great read!
Review: Love all of Agatha Christie's work. She creates strong heroines written in a timeline when it was not popular to be a strong woman. She writes male characters that recognize the heroine's abilities and come to accept and even support their cause. Forward thinking with mysteries that keep you guessing rather than being easy to spot early in the story.

Title: ONE OF MY FAVORITES!
Review: Oh, I do love a good Agatha Christie audio! And this one is fantastic because it has been well produced, I love all the different sound effects (especially when Mrs. Curtis is pouring the tea and passing the scones) and the voices of the actors are wonderful and the story has been well-adapted. I listen to this one at the beginning of every winter, as soon as there is snow on the ground. You'd understand why if you knew the story!

Title: Surpurb story with a tricky ending.
Review: I read this book many years ago and had actually forgotten the ending. What a surprise. Ms. Christie blends a little romance in as well but just enough to make it a fun read. It's mostly a good old fashioned mystery story with great characters. I think this is one of her finest, but then I always have liked her earliest books best.

Sehr lesenswert.Vielen Dank für das Lesen meiner Rezension. Ich hoffe, sie ist hilfreich. 🙂
