People seem to either love annuities or hate them. Those that love annuities are often blinded by the product’s limitations, thereby giving more fuel to those that hate annuities. Those that hate annuities are often ignorant about many key aspects of annuities. Like in most debates, the truth is typically somewhere in the middle. While annuities can solve many financial planning problems, they can’t solve them all. In fact, in my experience the biggest misuse of annuities typically occurs when advisors expect them to do too much. Unlike when I started in the industry, today there are numerous books and articles on annuities – including “Annuities for Dummies”. While some of these books are quite informative, I find that most of them are heavy and dense. They read too much like textbooks or get mired in the mechanics of the annuity contract, or both. I hope you find this book to be both an easy read as well as a balanced account of what annuities can and can’t do for an individual’s retirement portfolio.

Title: Just right, like Goldilocks wanted
Review: I was looking for a book in betweeen an introduction or "For Dummies" and a textbook with more depth than I care to read. This book is perfect if you have a basic understanding of investing from either personal or professional experience but are lacking exposure to annuities.I've worked in the financial services industry but only had experience with mutual funds and the underlying stocks & bonds. I was actually in the camp that thought "annuities are bad, no one should own them" and I've met those in the other camp that say "annuities are great, everyone should own one". Scott Stolz not only explains how these products work, but also where they fit and why they are so misunderstood by people in both camps.Einstein said "if you can't explain it simply then you don't understand it well enough." Stolz clearly understands annuities as well as anyone out there and does a great job of explaining them.

Title: The subtitle says it all, "Practical Advice for Every Advisor"
Review: The author does a fantastic job of delivering on the promise of his subtitle. The book is full of simple explanations of what can be complex topics. The reader is aided by example cases that model the consequence of taking a certain action. I also found the "inside baseball" side stories about the history of products very interesting. Additionally, while the author is clearly an advocate for annuities I think he was objective about the criticisms that annuities receive. He dedicates an entire chapter to Common Annuity Objections (the ones you read about in the press) and in it he explains the objection and identifies the situations when the objection is relevant. He usually follows that with an explainer on when the feature or product can make sense. If you are book smart on annuities, but would like to have a better understanding of the practical aspect of annuities and where they fit I highly recommend this book.

Title: Amazing in its simplicity!
Review: I have a pretty steep background in annuities - having worked for a Fortune 50 annuity provider and now as a retiree - maintaining CFP credentials on a emeritus status. Bottom line - people think I know this stuff! After reading Scott's book - I quickly realized what I didn't know - and all I could think about was how invaluable this book would be - not only to practitioners - but more importantly to those looking to purchase annuities. Invaluable is an understatement. Annuities can be such an important part of ones financial portfolio - Scott does an amazing job simplifying what they are - how they work - and which variety may make sense for ones portfolio - OUTSTANDING!

Title: Well written and easy to understand. Highly recommend this book!
Review: Well researched and written an in-depth analysis of annuities. I am a former annuity wholesaler and appreciate the easy to understand explanation and examples of a variety of annuities. I especially liked the review of Fixed Indexed Annuities. They are very popular, but are so complicated. When I explained it to a client so they can understand how it works, it was apparent they were still confused. I wish Scott Stolz's book had been available a decade ago. It would have helped me make a better description of the product. I highly recommend this book.

Title: Great For Investors Too!
Review: I found this book to be very informative as he breaks down potentially complex annuity products into easy to understand product offerings. As an investor, not an adviser, I appreciate the fact that he takes a neutral tone while examining the pro's and con's of each product within the annuity market. While I don't need to understand each product in detail, it has given me a solid framework of the industry products so I am more educated when I meet with my adviser to plan for retirement. Nice work!

Title: The Annuity Book of 2020!
Review: This is a superior book about the annuity profession and it is primarily for us professionals. This would have been an important book if had just been a normal year.. The knowledge Scott Stolz shares between the covers of his book is now worth twice as much during and after the pandemic. I bought 10 more copies for my 10 teammates. PGM

Title: Not for us
Review: Bought this for hubby for Christmas and he returned it. Was not for average person planning retirement. Was designed more for an insurance agent.
