Based on the highly effective, proven Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) program: a practical plan for natural ways to treat depression -- without medication

In the past decade, depression rates have skyrocketed, and one in four Americans suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us that our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life. Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need with these six components:
Brain FoodDon't Think, DoAntidepressant ExerciseLet There Be LightGet ConnectedHabits of Healthy Sleep

The Depression Cure's holistic approach has been met with great success rates, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications. For anyone looking to supplement their treatment, The Depression Cure offers hope and a practical path to wellness for anyone.

Title: Who Can Benefit From This Book? Everyone!
Review: The Depression Cure is full of very useful information and action steps to take to naturally cure depression. It's a very easy read. I finished it in 2 days reading part time.Throughout my lifetime, I have come to understand that lifestyle is EVERYTHING. How you chose to live your life (aka your lifestyle) will determine how you feel, your health, and your career to name a few. It will also determine whether or not you are setting yourself up for a bout with depression. And that was put so well as when Dr. Turner said: "Remember, we were never designed for the sedentary, socially isolated, sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, indoor, frenetic pace of modern American life. Our brains, our bodies, our minds, our hearts, and our souls were all built for something different- for a life filled with abundant physical activity, social connections, healthful sleep, balanced nutrition, natural sunlight, and the sort of meaningful engaging activities that leave little time for depressive rumination. By living the lives we were meant to lead, reclaiming the protective features of the past and integrating them into the present, we can overcome depression for the long haul. We can vanquish that treacherous foe once and for all. We can live the depression cure."His Six Step Program is all natural and he backs up his claims with published and documented study after study as well as with personal stories about his patients and how they have recovered using his methods. We simply must take charge of our own lives. And we do that by taking responsibility for our own happiness and well being.Dr. Turner is not anti-medication however, he is pro-natural methods as a first line of defense and recovery from depression. Dr. Turner believes (as do I) that drugs in all cases whether it be for depression or for chronic illnesses like diabetes should be our last resort and only after we have given all other natural methods a sincere and lengthy try.He takes us through how depression feels, the devastating effects on the patient as well as those people who love and work with that depressed person. He gives us the historical proof of how our ancestors who lived their entire lives as hunter-gatherers, never became depressed. They never became depressed even though they frequently faced far more dangers, performed far more labor intensive work and often endured far more violent assaults, etc than we can ever even imagine. As Dr. Turner points out, "The hunter-gatherer lifestyle is profoundly antidepressant."I love his "potent antidepressant effects of six major protective lifestyle elements that we all need to reclaim from our ancestors:- Dietary omega-3 fatty acids- Engaging activity- Physical exercise- Sunshine exposure- Social support- Sleep"While many if not most of these 6 elements seem obvious to us, Dr. Turner points out how we are not doing these 6 steps, why we're not doing these steps and the best part is how we can incorporate these steps into our modern day lives and cure the depression we may be feeling or ward off any possible future depression that our lifestyle is inviting into our lives.Dr. Turner's TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Change) has a proven record of being "remarkably effective in a large treatment study" at his university. He reports that "...every single patient who put the full program into practice got better, even though most had already failed to get well on antidepressant medications."I highly recommend The 6 Cures for Depression to everyone. There is a question that Dr. Turner says he is frequently asked. "Who might benefit from the program? My reply: Everyone." If you're not depressed, you know someone who is and this book will help you to help them. 5 stars!

Title: Encouraging and Uplifting for Those of Us Who Have Suffered for Years
Review: I read this book in hopes of becoming depression free after weaning myself off of my Zoloft antidepressant. I have been on antidepressants consistently (Effexor XR, Celexa, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Zoloft) for 15 years since I was diagnosed with depression and postpartum depression. I think this physician who wrote this book might really know what he's talking about. Antidepressants have worked for me for years (AT FIRST). However, after taking them for about six months to a couple years, they all seem to poop out on me and stop working. A month ago, I felt like I had absolutely no energy on Zoloft (100 mg/day). I was having to take a nap every single day. Just taking a shower required a ton of effort. I didn't FEEL depressed, however. I just lacked motivation, energy, and felt generally fatigued every single day. So I read this book after reading the reviews. I started to look up antidepressants in relation to weight gain also, since I haven't been able to lose the forty pounds I have gained since my daughters were born 8 years ago. How can I when I don't even have enough energy to take a shower, right? I read a lot of information about how SSRIs can cause a lot of weight gain, and I think I now understand why. This is my opinion, but I really feel like the author is correct in saying that SSRIs can make some people CRAVE carbohydrates and sweets to the point they feel addicted. I know I do. And of course this leads to weight gain. But I've also read on a lot of depression forums how many who take antidepressants feel they have absolutely no energy or motivation. I guess if you keep gaining weight from the antidepressants making you addicted to sugar and carbs, you WILL have no energy, right? All I know is, I knew the antidepressants were no longer going to work for me long term. I knew I needed to do something to bring back the old me and my energy level. I am normally a very high-energy, motivated, and ambitious individual, but I was sitting on the couch every single day because I had no energy. I decided to wean myself off the Zoloft a month ago. I did so slowly to prevent a relapse of depression as some people have said can happen if you wean too quickly. I read this book two weeks ago once I was finished weaning myself off the Zoloft. I have since had irritability and frequent mood changes and some abnormal sweating, but that's not all. I started following this physician's advice (slowly) over the last two weeks. I bought a 10,000 LUX light for light therapy every day and started using it a half hour each morning while drinking my coffee and reading. I started taking 3 capsules of Optimum Omega 3 Fish Oil (Dr. Tobia's brand) daily along with my 5,000 IU vitamin D and vitamin C 500 mg daily. This is all I have done so far. I am still eating whatever I want, including sugar and carbs, but I plan to make that change next. I haven't started my exercise program yet either. Baby steps....Well just weaning off my Zoloft, reading this book, starting fish oil, vitamin C, and light therapy daily for the past two weeks, and I already am feeling much better. I already have more energy than I've felt in months. I feel emotions like you wouldn't believe, which is another reason I didn't feel like myself on Zoloft. It numbed my emotions. Even happiness didn't feel like real happiness. Any emotion, whether it be anger, sadness, happiness, etc. never quite felt like I was really experiencing it to the full extent. I lost the joyful feeling I used to have in life on my antidepressants. Now yes, I am a little irritable (even noises were bothering me at first) and have been crying a little some days, but it feels nice to really feel joy and sadness, well maybe not anger, but hey. I am hopeful I will never have to return to taking antidepressants to manage my depression once I incorporate the rest of this physician's advice (diet, exercise, rumination, etc.). I have begun forgiving myself for allowing myself to believe I NEEDED the antidepressant like so many of us think. I have begun forgiving myself for wasting the last fifteen years being on antidepressants that zapped my energy, true feelings, self-confidence, and joy. I just woke up one day and realized I wasn't ever going to feel like my normal happy self used to feel while on medication. I looked around and realized that all the truly happy and joyful people are exercising, eating clean and healthy, and doing yoga. They're not all taking antidepressants. Maybe that's what I needed to do to feel like my real self again. After I read this book, I realized I wasted a lot of years being unhappy on antidepressants and maybe a lifestyle change was what I really needed all along. Some people may require antidepressants at first when depression is more severe or if they are suicidal, however, what if the majority of us are taking them just because commercials, other people, and society tells us we need them? Maybe we don't. Maybe the natural way can work if you include all the exercise, healthy eating, light therapy, vitamins, etc. to change your brain chemistry. This book made me think that maybe I have been thinking wrong about depression the whole last fifteen years of my life. It's too early to tell whether it has been a depression cure in my case, for it's only been 2 weeks. I haven't incorporated all the exercise, diet changes, etc. he recommends. But the little I've done so far....baby steps....have been encouraging to say the least. It's worth reading.
