Apple’s Swift is a powerful, beginner-friendly programming language that anyone can use to make cool apps for the iPhone or iPad. In Coding iPhone Apps for Kids, you’ll learn how to use Swift to write programs, even if you’ve never programmed before.

You’ll work in the Xcode playground, an interactive environment where you can play with your code and see the results of your work immediately! You’ll learn the fundamentals of programming too, like how to store data in arrays, use conditional statements to make decisions, and create functions to organize your code—all with the help of clear and patient explanations.

Once you master the basics, you’ll build a birthday tracker app so that you won’t forget anyone’s birthday and a platform game called Schoolhouse Skateboarder with animation, jumps, and more!

As you begin your programming adventure, you’ll learn how to:
–Build programs to save you time, like one that invites all of your friends to a party with just the click of a button!
–Program a number-guessing game with loops to make the computer keep guessing until it gets the right answer
–Make a real, playable game with graphics and sound effects using SpriteKit
–Challenge players by speeding up your game and adding a high-score systemWhy should serious adults have all the fun? Coding iPhone Apps for Kids is your ticket to the exciting world of computer programming.

Covers Swift 3.x and Xcode 8.x. Requires OS X 10.11 or higher.

A note from the Authors

Have you ever heard someone say, “I wish there was an app for that?” Maybe they were talking about a holiday card organizer or an app that can turn someone into a kitten. Well, you can be the person who makes that app! In this book, you’ll learn how to program in Swift, the language used for mobile applications that run on all Apple devices, and by the time you’ve finished reading, you’ll have developed apps you can run on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Learning a programming language will give you skills in problem solving, communication, and creativity. For these reasons, and many more, programming is a highly useful skill to have. Even if you don’t intend to become a professional programmer, if you regularly use a computer or a mobile device, then learning to program can improve your life.

Programming is fun for so many reasons—you get to solve puzzles, impress people with your code creations, and feel pretty powerful once you know how to control a machine. So, above all, don’t forget to have fun!

Title: Great technical book for kids, best with some programming experience and adult help
Review: I bought this book for my 8 year old, now 9. It's a good technical book with great layout and formatting that makes it easy to read and follow the examples. For an 8 or 9 year old it is pretty advanced and works best if the kid has already had some basic experience with programming. Even with some programming experience the book works well if the kid has an older sibling or parent to help them when they get stuck.

Title: Newbie? Buy this book!
Review: Don't overlook because of the "for kids" in the title. It's a solid introduction to the subject. The writing style, sample code, and explanations are for anyone who is interested in learning IOS programming with Swift. I hope the authors continue developing books on this subject. They did a great job with this book and I hope to see more from them in the future.

Title: This is a good coding book
Review: This is a good coding book, well written and with clear examples and illustrations. It contains some touches of humour directed to kids.As indicated by another buyer, this is not exclusively directed to kids, but can be very useful for adults that want to inniciate in this fascinatingworld.I do recommend it.

Title: Easy to start for a beginner and a nicely sectioned. Easy to read too.
Review: I am teaching Swift programming and iPhone App development for kids and found this book very easy to follow and am able to put a lesson plan together with the help of this book. My students use this book as part of their course material. So I bought several of these.

Title: I enjoyed the general layout
Review: I agree with the other review that it starts out strong but weakens in later chapters. I enjoyed the general layout, graphics, and learning curve although some parts of the book seemed like you're reading a foreign language - you read it over a few times and still wonder what the heck you just read. A little much for most kids. My biggest disappointment is that the current version of X-Code doesn't like some of the code in the book - which, when you're learning, stinks!

Title: Great beginner -> advanced iOS guidebooks
Review: This book is a great comprehensive introduction to developing iOS mobile apps with Swift. Some sections took me longer than others to fully comprehend due to density of certain concepts — If you follow every section in this book and build the projects alongside the instructions you will know everything you need to to develop a full-functioning app worthy of the app store

Title: Great Way to Get Started
Review: Really liked the format and flow of this book. I have about 30 years experience writing apps, but none with Swift. Good starting point.

Title: Very glad I did
Review: The idiots guide and for dummies both had mediocre reviews so I decided to go with this. Very glad I did. As an engineer with an aptitude for programming I found the book neither boring nor patronizing. As a newbie to Macs, Xcode, and Swift I appreciate that there were no skipped steps to leave me scratching my head. GOOD JOB!!!

Review: It’s simple and clear, It dose have an impression it’s for small kids with these photos and wonderful colour. but definitely not for small kids. I would say at least 10.While wordings are simple kids may not able to pickup themself by reading it, guidance is required.

Review: Far too advanced for younger students, even working with the help of an adult. This book is more appropriate for high school or older coders.
