Who doesn't love apples? Grown, harvested and eaten for centuries, apples play an important role in everyday life and are enjoyed in a huge variety of ways.

Author James Rich hails from apple country in Somerset, England, where his family own a cider farm. Apples, it could be said, are in his blood, this is a collection of over 90 of his best-loved recipes. Try your hand at a summery Crunchy apple, cherry and kale salad, a comforting Slow-roasted pork belly and pickled apple, and an Ultimate apple crumble, all washed down with a Cider and thyme cocktail. James uses whole apples as well as cider, apple juice, cider brandy and cider vinegar to add depth to his dishes

Apples can be delicate and complementary, floral and simple or they can be bold, sharp and stand out from the crowd. Set to the backdrop of his is family's stunning apple, Apple is a celebration of this humble fruit.

Title: Great recipes but some misprints
Review: Some of the recipes in this book are fabulous, but beware: it was not well proof-edited, and a number of mistakes have slipped through e.g. the Apple Crumble Muffins call for 50g of flour, but in fact it should be 150g - a fairly big mistake that led me to throw away a whole batch. If it doesn't seem right to you, google the recipe and check!

Review: I adore this book and the recipes. Definitely worth the addition to any food lover’s and home chef’s collection. Cover quality is top notch as are the photos and the choice of paper used. The Chicken, cider and Cheddar crumble on page 80 is devine. For dessert or snacking I can recommend the Apple, date and coffee loaf on page 165. Bon Apetite.

Review: You have to buy this amazing book it doesn't just have the most amazing recipe's to try, and they aren't like most books where you only try a few, we are going to make them all! No, this book is so much more, a really great read and so much to know about apples. The family connection with apples and cider is just so lovely. This would make any one a lovely present. Can see this making a great TV series, I think we shall see a lot more of James...and when is his next book out?!

Review: The publication does not particularly benefit from the current ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility above, although it does show the full, 4-page alphabetical INDEX at the back, that includes all the recipes within. The stock images above, also at the time of writing, give an idea of the layout, to see if it is the style for you.The front cover suggests a well-produced volume, and, to a point it is. Double page spread illustrations are dotted about that catch the eye. It is lovely to see the variety of apples and the obvious passion for the fruit from the author, but there is a surprising amount of ‘white space’ that could have been better distributed or filled with some line drawings perhaps, IMO.The text size for the information pieces at the front seems larger and more spread out than it needs to be, to me, and the 5 main sections all have a 4-page opener. Some shorter recipes are more than one to a page towards the back. On the other hand, ‘ALL-AMERICAN APPLE PIE’ is over 3 pages and ‘HOMEMADE TOFFEE APPLES’ gets a 4-page spot, which, on balance, seems a bit over the top, to me…but roll on Bonfire Night!ooOoo~ TITLE: APPLE: RECIPES FROM THE ORCHARD~ AUTHOR: JAMES RICH~ PHOTOGRAPHER: JACQUI MELVILLE~ PUBLISHER: HARDIE GRANT BOOKS~ 2019‘Printed and bound in China’From the back cover:🍏 ‘Who doesn't love apples?Grown, harvested and eaten for centuries, apples play an important role in everyday life and are enjoyed in a huge variety of ways.James Rich comes from a long line of apple farmers - apples, it could be said, are in his blood, this is a collection of over 90 of his best-loved recipes. Try your hand at a summery Crunchy apple, cherry and kale salad, a comforting Slow-roasted pork belly and pickled apple, and an Ultimate apple crumble, all washed down with a Cider and thyme cocktail.James uses whole apples as well as cider, apple juice, cider brandy and cider vinegar to add depth to his dishes.Apples can be delicate and complementary, floral and simple or they can be bold, sharp and stand out from the crowd.Set to the backdrop of his family's beautiful orchards, ‘Apple’ is a celebration of this humble fruit.’ 🍎ooOooThe chunky hardback measures around 19.5 cm x 25 cm x 2.5 cm. The lightly textured cover has an enticing illustration of a rustic box of apples on the front, with the book title lightly ingrained in crisp white lettering. The spine is a rosy pink hue that follows through to the inside cover pages, front & back.Inside are 224 good quality, matte finish pages, split over main sections as per the CONTENTS page (1st image below refers), namely:🍏 ~ LIGHT BITES🍎 ~ FEASTS🍏 ~ SIDES AND SAUCES🍎 ~ SWEET THINGS🍏 ~ DRINKS…sandwiched between those aforementioned short pieces, at the front, which are entitled:~ AN APPLE A DAY~ MY FAMILY~ ALL ABOUT APPLES~ CATEGORIES OF APPLES~ APPLE VARIETIES~ NOTES ON THE RECIPES~ STERILISING JARS…and notes ABOUT THE AUTHOR, at the back, just after a page of ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS.Each chapter has a pastel coloured, double page spread, line drawing opening, followed by a second double page spread, one with a relevant full-page illustration, the other with a short introduction. Then it is straight into the recipes. Each recipe has the title at the top, which could benefit from being a bit bolder or in a colour to draw the eye, again IMO. Then follows an opening note, often with accompaniment advice or a suggested tweak, the list/s of ingredients and then the clearly laid out method. There is also handy cross-referencing to component recipes, if applicable.A fair few recipes are accompanied by a full colour illustration, sometimes over the page, e.g. with:~ APPLE, RHUBARB AND GINGER JAM~ CRAB APPLE AND BLACKBERRY JAM~ APPLE AND MINT JELLY~ SOMERSET CIDER MARMALADE…on pages 122 & 123. When this happens, the illustration helpfully quotes the recipe title, with the page number in brackets.By comparison, and what may be disappointing to those of us who like to see what we are aiming for on the plate, e.g. ‘CHICKEN WITH CIDER’ & ‘ROAST DUCK AND CIDER BRANDY SAUCE’, pages 74 & 75 do not carry an illustration. On my menu for Hallowe’en:~ ‘SPICED PUMPKIN, APPLE AND CIDER STEW’~ ‘MUSSELS IN CIDER’~ ‘CIDER-GLAZED HAM’…and ‘APPLE CRUMBLE ICE CREAM’ (last image below refers), accompanied by ‘UNCLE MIKE’S CIDER PUNCH’, from page 190 & 191, ‘to get the party started’![14 images attached ©James Rich & Jacqui Melville/2019]
