Title: A very engaging, attention-holding tale with a surprise ending
Review: This wonderful short story, only 25 pages long, gave rise to a film version, which has many changes in the plot, of 112 minutes. The story is allegedly based on the psychological treatment procedures of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fetter. The Poe character states that while in France in 18--, he decided to visit a famed mad-house which used a "system of soothing" to treat its patients. He found the gate slightly open. The superintendent was very receptive to his visit. He told the visitor that while the "soothing system" had been used in the past, a problem was found with it, and it was no longer used. Under the "soothing system," the patients were allowed to roam freely, they were indulged, rarely confined, and never contradicted. There used to be many inmates in the house, but there were only ten now, and contrary to the former system, they were confined. The visitor was invited to supper and found that the table was filled with many people, the women were dressed in a funny fashion, and both men and women acted strangely and made rather strange remarks.

Title: Typical Poe.
Review: Generously described, Poe, as usual, makes the world around his story become a part of something almost real. The characters who are untrustworthy comfortable to like, giving us a glimpse of a great dilemma. With the paradox of the psychopath, Poe shows a place were my wrong isn't necessarily someone else's wrong, my normal isn't necessarily someone else's normal.Place like this shows the ugly face of the necessary evil, and makes you think about the grey area in our black-and-white world.Loved it.

Title: ... my rating of this author duecto me seeing an excellent movie based on the novel
Review: I based my rating of this author duecto me seeing an excellent movie based on the novel. It was a very well produced film with top actors and incredible music. But if the great film and the best twist ever at the end is a reflection on the mind of Edgar Alan Poe, then ,yes, it is a great piece of writing.

Review: Interesting film. Who' in charge of the asylum...the keepers or the inmates? Now I understand why most mental hospitals were closed in the 1970s!

Review: Classic, beautifully written and done the way Poe does best - subtle creepiness that lingers with you for days, without relying on schlock-horror blood, guts and cliches.
