Gutenberg’s invention of movable type in the fifteenth century introduced an era of mass communication that permanently altered the structure of society. While publishing has been buffeted by persistent upheaval and transformation ever since, the current combination of technological developments, market pressures, and changing reading habits has led to an unprecedented paradigm shift in the world of books.
Bringing together a wide range of perspectives—industry veterans and provocateurs, writers, editors, and digital mavericks—this invaluable collection reflects on the current situation of literary publishing, and provides a road map for the shifting geography of its future: How do editors and publishers adapt to this rapidly changing world? How are vibrant public communities in the Digital Age created and engaged? How can an industry traditionally dominated by white men become more diverse and inclusive? Mindful of the stakes of the ongoing transformation, Literary Publishing in the 21st Century goes beyond the usual discussion of 'print vs. digital' to uncover the complex, contradictory, and increasingly vibrant personalities that will define the future of the book.

Title: Read for Equality
Review: This book has earned top shelf status in my office. The essay "Diversity Is Not Enough: Race, Power, Publishing," by Daniel Jose Older started my drive to attract attention to the inequities in literary publishing. This is action that matters. If readers become aware of the excellent writing not available to us because the Big Five publishers cannot figure out how to react to writers of color, then we can speak up, spend our money on the books we deserve to see, urge our libraries to take a hard look at their purchases, and talk to indie bookstore owners about our desire to see a selection of material that matters. Please, read this book and react in the interest of fairness. READ FOR EQUALITY!

Title: Wonderfully informative book
Review: What a timely and exciting book! Here it is, folks, contemporary literary publishing laid out on a petri dish. And you know what? ... The picture doesn't look half bad. A marked change has taken place in the past 2-3 years: the contributors here seem buoyed by new possibilities, appreciative of their advantages, and little interested in reflexive Amazon-bashing. It's a complex landscape as we move toward the new normal of "can't we all get along," but what shines through in these essays is the creativity, optimism, and sentimental hard-headedness (yes, I said sentimental, which is OK too) of these publishers. I love the diversity of approach on display here, with a mix of essay, mini-memoir, and data-driven analysis. The editors are to be congratulated on assembling such uniformly high-quality material, and the book itself is beautifully produced. Enlightening and a real charmer! Check it out.

Title: It's about nonfiction.
Review: It is mainly about nonfiction. Anyone writing fiction should look for a different book. There are some helpful nuggets but otherwise I would not read it unless you are writing professional work like a textbook.
