Learning to cook delicious meals using healthy ingredients is a snap in this new cookbook. With humorous anecdotes and current factoids on health, Julie and Sue explain everything from the truth behind beans and flatulence to demystifying the simple process of soaking and cooking dried beans and lentils.

At a time when eating foods that are as good for the environment as they are for us is a growing concern, whole, healthy, high-fibre foods such as beans and grains are in high demand. Helpful info from gastroentrologist Dr. Guido Van Rosendaal also highlights the physical benefits of incorporating more legumes and whole grains into our everyday diets.

Spilling the Beans covers it all, from how to cook up beans and grains, to how to add healthy fibre to your favorite desserts. An entire section on baking delicious desserts with beans amps up cakes, bars, and cookies with flavour and fiber.

Title: An Easy to follow “Digest” for anyone wanting to learn more
Review: Although this cookbook is not a recent publication (I discovered it at the library) it is both creative and informative in its approach for all skill levels in the kitchen. Easy to understand directions, nice illustrations, and practical, but very tasty ways of incorporating more beans in your diet

Title: Every recipe is a keeper
Review: I love this book so much. I wish this author had written more. The Naan bread and biscotti are amazing. And the bean and grain salads are my weekly staples. They are so flavorful and filling and keep for several days. My husband doesn't like beans much but even he loves these recipes.

Title: Easy to follow recipes that taste great
Review: I have ordered hundreds of items on Amazon, but rarely do I find myself writing a product review. I noticed this book only has one review and it deserves more. I purchased this book about a month ago and have made several tasty recipes including Red Lentil & Sweet Potato Curry with Spinach, Charred Corn, Black Bean, & Toasted Barley Salad, Roasted Beet Hummus, Baked Penne with Sausage, Spinach, & Beans, and Curried Sweet Potato, Carrot, & Red Lentil Soup. What I love most about this book is that the beans and grains are not always on centerstage, but play a supporting role to dishes adding in fiber and health benefits without feeling like you are eating a plate of beans. I also appreciate the authors comments on each recipe as they suggest ingredients you can swap to add variation. For example, I used quinoa in place of the barley in the salad I mentioned and it was so good that I don't know if I'll ever try the toasted barley. And they have a recipe for a traditional hummus and then give you four variations, including the roasted beet hummus. There's a section called Baking with Beans and it includes desserts and breads, but I haven't tried any of those yet.I also like the simple format of this book. It has a clean look with the ingredients for each recipe listed in a colored box and the directions are below with comments to the side. Some of my cookbooks go a little overboard with fluff so I appreciate simplicity.Overall, this is a cookbook that I am very happy with and will continue working my way through it trying new recipes.

Title: Great Looking Recipes but No Nutritional Information Included
Review: I read the ‘look inside’ information in Amazon’s listing and was hooked. The sample content is informative and well written. When the cookbook arrived I dove into it eagerly. The introduction spends considerable space touting the benefits of eating more whole grains and beans, a topic I’m very interested in. The recipes are interesting, and photos beautiful. Unfortunately, when I wanted to prepare a recipe I found no nutritional information, including portion sizes. Nutrition calculators make knowing total recipe nutritional value, including calories, but I’ll still need to decide portion sizes to fit into my dietary plan and that adds considerable time and effort before one bean hits the pot.

Title: Best bean book
Review: I have been looking for a while to make less meat filled meals for my family and love beans becuase they are hearty like meat but cheaper. All the other bean books I have used are only focused on soups and salads. This book has more than just that and are simple great tasting dishes.

Title: Good book for diverse bean recipes
Review: I would give this book 4.5 stars. I've tried 3 recipes so far and they've turned out pretty good. I especially like the section on bean and grain salads which have tasty combinations of bean, vegetables, fruits, and grains. I should state that I've been trying to reduce animal product (particularly animal flesh) from my diet which is why I turned to this book---to find various ways to eat beans to help meet daily protein needs. While this book isn't vegetarian, I would recommend this book to vegetarians and vegans that feel comfortable in the kitchen to be able to modify recipes to produce a vegetarian/vegan dish. I think the strength of the book is in offering more variety and creative recipes. And I like that the recipes, so far, have been more flavorful without overdoing spices than other vegetarian cookbooks. I think the only negative is that if you are vegetarian, you need to modify the recipes to add more beans to get more protein. Some of the recipes can be kind of "light" (in terms of protein heftiness) for vegetarian needs. If you're an omnivore, you shouldn't have any issues with this book.

Title: Great Cookbook!
Review: I love this cookbook! It has a variety of recipes that call for beans, lentils, and interesting grains. I thought the book would focus mostly on beans, but it has a mix of recipes. We have tried quite a few of the recipes since we got the cookbook and have loved most of them. The sections in the book are:IntroductionBeans for BreakfastAppies & SnacksBeany, Grainy SaladsSandwichesSoups & StewsOne-Dish MealsPastaBeany SidesBaking with BeansIndexI have mainly cooked from the Beany, Grainy Salads, Soups & Stews, One-Dish Meals, and Pasta sections. We have enjoyed the recipes from these sections. I love using more variety of grains and beans in my dinners. I'm looking forward to making more of these recipes and trying out baking with beans!

Title: Quite the find!
Review: I just got the book yesterday so have not made any of the recipes, but I’m super excited to do so. I am trying to incorporate more beans and grains into my diet and this book definitely will help me to do that. I’m especially excited to try the soups. I’m starting with the spinach, bean and pasta soup, though it was hard to choose since there were so many that sounded tasty. Couscous with roasted vegetables, feta annd chickpeas, Mexican fried rice, and curried quinoa salad were just some of the other dishes that sound tempting. Even the desserts - which looked delicious - are made with beans. The full-page color photos are stunning and are definitely motivating me to get started on some of the recipes soon. I’m going shopping tomorrow with that in mind.

Review: It's become one of my go-to books (and I'd say I own at least 100 cookbooks). Beautiful pictures. Mostly quick, simple, easy-to-follow recipes, Several of the recipes have become standard fare in our home:- curried red lentil soup when I need something quick on a week night,- black bean brownies (though I often sub red lentils) don't taste 'healthified" (well, probably because they retain all the fat and sugar you'd want in a good brownie!),- pizza dough (yes, made with part beans, part flour)- waffles (for "waffle Wednesdays" (btw: the Breville waffle maker is fantastic, if you're going to make enough waffles to justify the price - waffles lift right out, and all I have to do to clean, really, is blow away a few crumbs - I may just wipe it with a wet rag for my guilty conscience, but it's really only a matter of form) (I also often sub red lentils for these...as I do for most recipes calling for mashed beans)- pancakes- the flatbread used in the doubles recipe is a-mazingAs you can see, I'm quite smitten by the use, in this book, of beans as a partial substitute for flour in baking and such. I'm vegan, and this is a lovely new way to sneak beans into our diet. This is not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, book, so many (most?) recipes call for meat and/or dairy, and I've veganized with my own substitutions where necessary. I've also tried many other soups and stews, which have mostly been well received by my family of 6 (4 children under the age of 11). There are also other sections, such as salads and appetizers, which I haven't delved into due to family preferences.I love this book so much, I've given it out to a few people as a gift, at least one of whom tried several recipes on her family of 6, saying they loved all the new food (except for one dud), even her most picky eater, and since it was so quick, easy and delicious (and she's not crazy about cooking the way I am), it was going to replace her Jamie Oliver book as her favourite (I've never tried Jamie's books, so I can't compare). I'm planning to give out more. 🙂

Review: I heard about this cookbook through a fave review in the Georgia Straight, our alternate newspaper. By the time my turn at a reserve copy came up at the Public Library, it was over a year since I'd read about it. The recipes were worth it, though! After trying a few, even my husband (who prefers blander, smoother, softer side dishes, accenting the meat, not the other way around) was sure we should buy it, too. Most recipes don't contain meat, and those that do, use it to accent the beans and grains--both are included in most recipes, and the ones I have tried so far are delicious and easy to prepare, although the preparation time estimates seem a little optimistic. My only criticisms would be the book's unwieldy size and binding--it's hard to keep open for reference as you cook, so I may follow advice I've heard for knitting books--have it rebound with a spiral binding.

Review: I love this cook book. The little stories that accompany the recipes inspire you to make something, and as I am not a vegetarian (although try to cook a vegetarian meal 1-2x per week) I like that there are a selection of recipes that are meat-free as well as made with meat. Truly something for everyone. Try the banana cardamom bread, the first time I made it I thought it hadn't turned out but it did so I've made it a few times now!

Review: We are attempting to add more beans to our diet because of the growing cost of meat. So far we have tried four recipes since we bought the book earlier in the month; all have exceeded our expectations.
