Experience mouthwatering Southern baking—from humble home kitchens to innovative new Southern chefs. One of the world's richest culinary traditions comes to life through this essential cookbook from bestselling author Anne Byrn. Recipes can tell you volumes if you pay attention—the crops raised, languages spoken, family customs, old world flavors, and, often, religion. Did you know that where a mill was located affected the recipes handed down from that area? Or that baking and selling pound cakes directly impacted the Civil Rights Movement? These stories and recipes, developed from good times and bad, have been collected and perfected over years and are now accessible to us all. Anne's expertise in assessing, modernizing, and developing well-written recipes makes this the definitive guide for bakers of all levels.
From-scratch, Southern classic recipes include:
Thomasville Cheese BiscuitsOuita Michel's Sweet Potato Streusel MuffinsNina Cain's Batty Cakes with Lacy EdgesThe Best Lemon Meringue PieGeorgia Gilmore's Pound Cake
This fascinating dive into the history of 14 Southern states—Texas, Florida, Kentucky, and more—features stories and beautifully photographed recipes from pre-Civil War times to today's Southern kitchens. It's about the places, the people, the products and the culture of the moment that influenced what people baked. It's about African-American women and the monumental contributions they have made to the art of Southern baking, about home cooks and how they've kept traditions alive wherever they settle by baking family recipes each year for holidays and celebrations, and about the pastry chefs who have thoughtfully reimagined how the South bakes.
Experience the recipes and the stories behind them that showcase the substantial contributions Southern baking has made to American baking at large. Food historians, bakers, foodies, and cookbook collectors from every corner of the country will want this cookbook in their collections.

Title: Wonderful history book and cookbook
Review: I grew up in South Georgia and with all Southern food, trained by my mother, two grandmothers, and my third precious grandmother, my grandmotherâs cook. I thought I knew every recipe there is from Georgia. There is so much more here. I sit and read and cry, remembering our history in the South. I read a recipe this morning from one of my motherâs dear friends; she and my mother are both gone now. I have eaten her recipe many times and met her several times on visits. When I found the recipe this morning I was sobbing, for the loss of the recipe owner, which recipe she never gave to anyone, and the loss of my mother and all 3 grandmothers. Each recipe is delivered with pictures, and with a loving history of the cook and where they made the recipe. There are recipes from white folk, black folk, transplanted Europeans. There are recipes by religious tradition, cultural traditions, types of baking. If you love cornbread, biscuits, pies, cakes, and who doesnât love all of those, you will be in Heaven. And there is more which I havenât gotten to yet. I knew it would be good when several of the recipes I have used for years are in the book. Exactly as I make them. Donât hesitate to purchase this book if you love authentic Southern cooking, and also for the references of where to buy the best ingredients for each type of baking. Christmas is comingâ¦â¦buy for your Mother, your Sister, your Daughter, your friends. Anyone who loves to bake. And be prepared to smile and cry.

Title: Beautiful and informative!
Review: Anneâs latest book is filled with careful research and enough mouth watering recipes to keep you baking for months. It reads like a novel but also like a âhow-toâ guide as it takes you through favorite recipes and traditions from each Southern state.I particularly love the recipe for Mrs. Collinsâ Sweet Potato Cake. I took it to the mountains to serve for dessert to my childhood friends, and they loved it so much that we had it again for breakfast the next morning. It tastes like it comes from your motherâs kitchen.Iâm excited to keep baking! And reading!

Title: Size and information
Review: Here is what I think. The recipes are wonderful. But the book is so large and heavy to handle. I believe you could have made a book out of every section with the same type of intro. Because all the info about flour etc was very informative. A real need in every book. This way you can hit a bigger audience because everyone would have a section they like better.

Title: Southern Baking with Stories, History, and Recipes
Review: Anne Byrn is one of my favorite cookbook author and I love her cookbooks. Of course, this became one of my favorites quickly and this is why. This book features recipes from the south and every recipe comes with history and tells us how life and history evolve them throughout the years. Stories behind each and every recipes are truly fascinating and worth a read. Not to mention this book brings an outstanding amount of true Southern baked goods that will make you want to start baking from cornbread, biscuits to pies and many more! The only thing I wish this book had was more photographs of the recipes, however, this would've been a ginormous cookbook if it contained more pics since it already is a huge book.I'm not from Southern area, but I love their foods and the joy they bring. I learned a lot from Baking in the American South and can't recommend enough to anyone who loves baking and would like to bake Southern baked gems!
