The acclaimed food writer’s “go-to guide for Austin eating” shares classic and creative recipes from the city’s greatest restaurants (Publishers Weekly).

The story of Austin food is equal parts deep Texan traditions and a booming food scene. It is this atmosphere that has fostered some of the hottest restaurants in the country, a lively food truck community, and a renaissance in the most Texan of foods: barbecue.

Austin food is also tacos and Tex-Mex, old fashioned Southern cooking, street food and fine dining, with influences from all over the globe. Above all, it’s a source of pride and inspiration for chefs and diners alike.

Organized by Austin’s “major food groups”, The Austin Cookbook explores the roots of Texas food traditions and the restaurants that are reinventing them, revealing the secrets to Bob Armstrong dip, Odd Duck’s sweet potato nachos, East Side King’s beet fries, and of course, smoked brisket that has people lining up to eat it—even in the Texas summer.

Part cookbook, part restaurant guide, and 100 percent love letter, The Austin Cookbook is perfect for proud locals, curious visitors, and (t)ex-pats.

Title: Funny, clever, and delicious recipies
Review: I've been to Texas a number of times for work. I've loved the food scene in Austin as much as any place. This cookbook has both novel food as well as basic comfort food with an Austin twist. I needed to take something to the party and new it had to be Paula's version of pimento cheese spread. It was a huge hit. It's sort of retro but delicious.I also love the writing. I've followed Paula's food writing and really enjoy her thoughtful and humorous take on cooking, the restaurant scene, and the people that do the work.Totally recommend this book.

Title: One of the best cookbooks I have
Review: One of the best cookbooks I have! The author breaks down complicated recipes in an easy-to-follow format. She also provides lots of local and cultural tidbits that give depth to the recipes. It's a practical cookbook, but it's also just a beautiful book - the composition and design are visually compelling. I bring it in the kitchen when I cook, and display it as a 'coffee table book' in my living room when I'm finished.

Title: This is without doubt the most colorful cookbook on my shelf.
Review: From breakfast tacos, BBQ, quail, queso, to gourmet cookies, these recipes represent the food that is truly unique to Austin. Thanks to Paula Forbes, a stickler for writing recipes and an expert cookbook reviewer, you can recreate these Austin restaurant favorites confidently in your own kitchen. And while you're cooking, you can revisit the color, creativity and essence of Austin every time you flip through the pages. This is without doubt the most colorful cookbook on my shelf.

Title: Best recipes of many Austin restaurants
Review: No one buys cookbooks anymore, but this was given to us as a gift and is the coolest. Famous dishes from restaurants all over town - we have those recipes. It is a fun read and a treasure. We have given several as gifts since receiving ours.

Review: This book has some great instructional information as well as interesting tidbits about the city of Austin. Never having visited there, I can get a sense of the atmosphere and vibe of the city's food culture. I've only tried a couple recipes so far but most seem easy to follow and although 'smoking' seems intimidating, the author does a nice job of demystifying the process along with handy advice. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants some history and culture to go along with their Tex-Mex!

Customers say

Customers find the recipes in the book good and excellent for recreating those foods. They describe the design as visually compelling and a great gift. Readers also mention the book is fun and a treasure. However, some customers feel the pacing is disappointing and the BBQ section is a complete waste of money.
