Using various (and completely subjective) criteria including lifetime statistics, personal and professional contributions to the game at large, sportsmanship, character, popularity with the fans, and more, sports writer Derek Gentile ranks the best players of all time.

Along with a ranking, information on each player is presented, including the teams on which he has played throughout his career, positions played, lifetime statistics, and a brief biography -- as well as a photograph. Baseball's Best 1,000 is sure to spark controversy and debate among fans.

Review: The list is subjective and I guess that's ok. But why would I be interested in a subjective list? There are many excellent baseball books out there where people give reasons and arguments for what they believe.I liked the book to some extent, because there were interesting facts and comments about the players. I did find it odd that he mentioned how well several of the Pitchers hit and then didn't mention hitting at all when he talked about the best hitting pitcher of all time, the one who hit better than his brother, a Hall of Fame position player.I didn't mind that his list is just flat wrong because my list would be just flat wrong also because no one is right about this sort of thing. However, Bill James wrote a few pages about why Willy Mays had the better career while Mickey Mantle was greater in the short term and another few pages about why some Left Fielders are faster than any Right Fielder but other Left Fielders are slower than any Right Fielder and those few pages were more interesting than this whole book. And that is because James, right or wrong, used evidence and logic.

Title: Ignores Modern Statistical Knowledge
Review: Correctly, the author has Barry Bonds in the top ten all-time.But, Alex Rodriguez at something like 167 - Should be in the top 50, probably in the top 30.If you want him at shortstop, then he's second all-time to the great Honus Wagner. If you want him at third base, he is easily the best ever, easily surpassing the quite great Mike SchmidtAlbert Pujols is not even in the top 500. Also should be in the top 50, probably the top 30.The second greatest first baseman of all-time, second only to the great Lou Gehrig - easily surpassing all others at that position. The best thing about this shoddy job is that there are a LOT of great players here from the Negro leagues. But even this isn't done SERIOUSLY, as is shown by the Relatively Low ranking of the preeminent Oscar Charleston.Check on Joe Posnanki's The Baseball 100. Far more well researched, far better written, and, for those reasons and others, far, far, far more popular. Or, for an oldie, go to Bill James's New Historical Baseball Abstract. This present work can't compare with either of them.On the positive side, the kindler version of this book is INexpensive.

Title: I really like this book, it needs some editing though
Review: I really love the e-book Baseball's Best 1,000: Rankings of the Greatest Players of All Time. The book could use an editor to review the sentence structure, and change present tenth to past tenth for players who have retired. This book is the authors believe in where particular players rank among the best 1000. Of course I would like to argue a little bit with the author; nevertheless, I think he did a very good job with his selection of the first 200. I have only read through the first 300, but if his last 700 is similar to the first 300, I think you did a great job. I highly recommend this book to at a minimum starting argument about the top 1000 baseball players.

Review: This is book is very enjoyable. However, other than the first 20 rankings, the others are clearly randomly done. They have 250 hitters ahead of hall of fame players and this has occurred many times.Nonetheless, it is a fun book to read in the summer.
