'Brilliant' MAIL ON SUNDAY

Si King and Dave Myers, AKA the Hairy Bikers have travelled an interesting road. Born in the north of England, both Si and Dave had their childhood challenges. For Si, being bullied as the fat kid in class was part of his daily school routine. For Dave, his life changed when he became a childhood carer for his mother. But through the challenges of their early years came a love of really good food.

And it was food that brought Si and Dave together. Their eyes met over a curry and a pint on the set of a Catherine Cookson drama, and they knew they would be firm and fast friends for life.

From deserts to desserts, potholes to pot roasts, the nation's favourite cooking duo reveals what's made their friendship such a special and lasting one. They've eaten their way around the world a good few times, but have never lost sight of what matters: great friends, great family and great food.

In this heartwarming memoir of friendship and hilarious misadventure, Si and Dave take you on the ride of their lives!

Title: A wonderful entertaining read
Review: A very well written book where you can hear the 2 of them telling the story as if they were in the same room. From their humble beginnings to the stars of today. Tragedy on the way and drams by the score.Done in alternate chapters each this is a very entertaining book. One of the better autobiographies I have read.A recommended book

Title: Heart, soul and a bit of cooking
Review: I’m a big fan of the Hairy Bikers. I’ve seen most if their shows. I own most of their cookbooks. If I’m stuck for an idea about what to cook for dinner, they’re my first choice for inspiration. I’m not a big reader of autobiographies, but as soon as I saw they’d written one, I wanted to read it.In many ways, it serves what we’ve come to expect from Si and Dave. Like their TV shows and cookbooks, it’s an accessible look into their lives told with their distinctive, irresistible charm and lots of heart. Amongst this though, is a very intimate, frank look at the men behind the brand, their struggles, successes and the toll fame has taken on their health and relationships. What struck me most about the book though was strength of their bond of friendship, which we tend to think of as being manufactured or artificial exaggerated with celebrity duos. In their case, not at all. I don’t think Si or Dave would object to me describing them as ‘platonic soulmates.’ As Dave notes on one of his wedding photos, “Lil realised that in one way she married both of us.”They give us an honest view about how the people (and often themselves as individuals) become ‘third wheels’ next to their massive commitment to work, each other and the industry that is ‘Hairy Bikers.’ As I reached the closing pages, I have to say, it felt very bittersweet. After reading this book, I don’t think I’ll ever watch a Hairy Bikers show in quite the same way. It’s one thing to share your recipes with the world, quite another to bare your soul(s). Si, Dave, thanks.

Title: Yawn!
Review: I'll start off by admitting that I had never heard of these guys before I read their book. Plainly, they run a popular TV cookery show in the UK.Right, that said, I found the history of their lives so mundane and un-appetising that I yawned and tossed the book aside long before its end. There was nothing there that even inspired me to watch one of their programmes. So, unless you are a fan of these two men, I would suggest you watch their show, try some of their recipes, and allow their charisma to grow on you before reading their book.I give the book four stars because it is well written and I can well understand that their followers will gulp it down and smack their lips.

Review: I just love the recipes of the "Hairy Dieters" series - and getting to know the two authors on a more personal side was very interesting, eye-opening and a good read throughout the book. Respect for what they have achieved!!!

Review: So many things in common with Dave and Si growing up at the same time in the North that it brought back good and bad memories of overcoming poverty through hard work. The book is very entertaining, lots of anecdotes to make you laugh out loud of bring a tear to your eye with the life experiences they've had. Great chefs, great men. Buy the book, it won't disappoint.

Review: So many people who achieve 'celebrity' status seem to do so with very little talent and hard work. The Hairy Bikers are not amongst them. In this very readable, honest autobiography, Si King and Dave Myers reveal the toughness of their lives, which makes their success all the more deserved. Full of family heartache - bereavements, setbacks, shortage of money, lack of job security, both of them obtained work within the notoriously fickle world of media (TV production running, make-up and prosthetics respectively), before meeting up and hitting it off as friends. From this, the concept of the Hairy Bikers eventually evolved, and with the inevitably lucky breaks, contacts and things coming along at the right time, their careers as TV cooks and all-round decent, honest blokes took off.The early chapters in the book are, unsurprisingly, the most honest and interesting. The book strikes the right balance between initial struggles and their lives as the Hairy Bikers, but the final few chapters tend to get a bit repetitive with numerous references to culinary world trips and the general good fortune that seems to have come their way. That said, neither of them take anything for granted. Health issues, broken relationships and the precarious nature of working in an industry where you are only as good as your last set of ratings has left these guys with their feet planted firmly on the ground. Above all, their dedication to each other as genuine friends comes over strongly, and at times, movingly, in the book. A breezy, interesting read, about characters who give the strong impression that it would be as nice to meet them for real as it is to read about them. Their success is richly deserved.
