If you're ready to shed more than just the weight, listen to one woman's remarkable journey of self-discovery and healing. In Diary of a Fat Girl you gain an intimate view into how one woman overcame her past and began anew. Through Lisa Sargese's heart-wrenching (but often laugh-out-loud funny) memoir, you'll be inspired to discover your inner strength and drive to triumph in your own life challenges.
Diary of a Fat Girl is a must-listen for anybody who has struggled with body image, self-harm, self-hatred, abusive relationships, low self-esteem, binge eating disorder, bulimia, or a lack of self-love. You'll be inspired to see yourself in a whole new way by listening to this amazing book.
She knew what she needed to do...she just couldn't. Lisa felt that she should know better than to hate herself for being fat. As a professor of women's studies she knew she should love herself just as she is was - all 420 pounds of herself.
But the truth was, she couldn't manage to love herself, try as she might.
And even after two lap band weight loss surgeries, she still suffered from binge eating disorder. In Lisa's words, she could eat "two whole pizzas, three Entenmann's cakes, and a two-liter bottle of soda in a three hour binge" all to punish herself for existing.
Something had to change. Lisa's second lap band weight loss surgery had failed over a decade earlier. But she was too poor and too defeated to attempt a third.
But after more than 10 years of suffering daily binges, unbearable feelings, abusive relationships, and failing physical health, she knew she couldn't continue as she had been.
In 2006 she underwent gastric bypass surgery and began the long and difficult journey to health and happiness for the first time in her life.

Title: There is no magic bullet, only hard work, determination, and unending desire to accomplish your goals.
Review: This is a gutsy book! Engaging and sometimes difficult to read thinking that Lisa was actually living this, feeing this. Lisa has taken everything that's inside her, the good and the challenging, and shared it for everyone to see.It almost feels as if weâre invading her privacy by reading her diary. But weâre not â Lisa has put her whole being out for public consumption and bravely presents herself to the world. Even in her weakness Lisa demonstrates strength throughout.I especially like her story of the clanging monkeys. You know those little wind up monkeys that clang cymbals? Lisa envisions one representing each of our problems in life. People with a lot of problems have a lot of clanging monkeys. Lisa claims a whole room of them, where the sound is deafening. But she shows us how to face those monkeys down, how to stare those monkeys down, and had to shut those monkeys down. She tells us that no single thing in life started each of those monkeys clanging, and no one thing â like a silver bullet â is going to stop them from clanging. This is a lesson we need to take from Lisa, there is no magic bullet, only hard work, determination, and unending desire to accomplish your goals.

Title: Written from the gut.....pun intended!
Review: All of the reviews here have said exactly what I wanted to say. This book is a hard hitting, emotional, and honest revelation of Lisa's ups and downs of dealing with lifelong food and body issues. You have never read the inner workings of a woman's mind and emotions quite like this. Yes, sometimes it is disturbing, other times is is heartbreaking, but it is always honest. It will make you look at your own feelings and ideas about food and wellness in a different way. If you have ever struggled with weight loss or body acceptance, you will see yourself in this book and be glad someone has expressed their inner thoughts on these important issues. If you have not, you will be challenged to see the way we have been taught to think about body size and approval in a new way.I find Lisa's style of writing to be very accessible and easy to read. The book is hard to put down! You want to keep reading to see what Lisa is going through next. While reading it, I kept waking up in the night to read more. Since reading it, I can't read any blogs that go on and on and on. Lisa gets right to the point and has a wonderful way of expressing her deepest thoughts and feelings. I can't wait for Part 2!

Title: Lisa seemed to shift blame a lot and seemed to come up with absurd reasons to allow herself to continue her poor eating habits
Review: Being someone who has struggled with weight issues most of my life, a lot of Lisa's feelings resonated very deeply with me. Overeating can be an addiction just as powerful as the strongest drug. However, anyone who has gone through any type of recovery program knows that you MUST be able to hold yourself accountable for your actions if you are ever going to get well. Lisa seemed to shift blame a lot and seemed to come up with absurd reasons to allow herself to continue her poor eating habits. The body craves the junk because it is addicted to it - not because it is in "need" of something nutritional. It really is no different than a heroin addict craving her drug. I was not surprised to learn that she had quite a bit of regain after her surgery. It is just a tool, it is up to us to use it correctly. I commend her for putting herself out there to the world anyway. That takes courage.

Title: A great read!
Review: A great read for anyone struggling to love themselves enough to get healthy. Lisa used food as a crutch to fill the voids in her life. She eventually persevered past the scars from her childhood and young adulthood and began loving herself. This book will give you a new perspective on what to focus on (glass half full).

Title: Touched by Lisa's raw honest truth....
Review: A heartfelt honest story. Lisa talks of her journey as if your having coffee with her. Honest, emotional, yet told with humor. She is a sweetheart who has had to be Brave...and believe in herself...she never just wallows in the blame game...she dusts her self off each and every fall. Fall down six times stand up seven! She takes you from her surgery for weight loss right into daily life after. Restaurants, gyms, public, fighting depression. She will make you cheer for her and at the same time give you hope in yourself. At the end of the book you don't find an ending but a new beginning and a work in process to your best self and a happy life. Lisa brings hope, healing, and belief that life is a journey that has no time limit to become your Best Self. Don't hesitate to read this wonderful honest book!

Title: A deeply personal and inspiring story
Review: I'm not a person who has experienced weight loss surgery, nor have I struggled with food issues. But reading Lisa's book - written in straight language, with deep honesty and more than a little personality - has given me great empathy for those who have. Reading this, I've gained insights into the emotional landscape that can lead to binge eating, low self esteem and abusive behaviors. And it has opened my heart to those who face these issues. Lisa is able to describe the most personal details of her struggles in the gym, shower, the mirror, or with her mother, with such humor and self-awareness that they become universal. She has a strong and entertaining voice, which keeps you reading. Lisa has navigated a painful life with grace and pluck, and her journey to health is an inspiring story that will benefit many people.

Title: A must-read! Raw, compelling, and honest.
Review: Dynamic, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking, Lisa Sargese's story is one you shouldn't miss. Lisa takes us through her journey of healing after gastric bypass surgery, both physically and psychologically. She is unflinching in her self-examination and the stories are compelling, honest, easy to relate to, and often raw with emotion. This is a manual for anyone who struggles with self-image, addiction, and/or disordered eating. Lisa teaches you how to begin changing your thought patterns, and how to embrace your faults while treating yourself with kindness. She shows through her own experience how to move from darkness to hope. This book is a must-read for anyone considering bypass surgery, as Lisa does not recommend it and shares vivid details about the complications and consequences of her procedure.

Review: A frank, funny, and non-filtered read - Lisa journals her rough journey of self-growth, self-disipline, constant battles, inevitable failures, motivation and inspirational psychological reawakening and rebirth. It is incredibly exciting to take a look into someone's diary. Lisa's sense of resilience, topped with brutal honesty, while never losing her great sense of humour makes for a fantastic and heart-warming read.As a daughter of a covert narc mother, a young woman and a binge eater myself, this book was insightful and thought-provoking. I highly recommend it!We must control food and not let it control us! Excited for the next book!

Review: I felt everything that Lisa wrote about. The way she described the pain and shame of carrying around a body that caused her such tremendous humiliation and physical trauma. And then she kept going. And going and going. And she just won't give up trying to lead a life that brings her happiness. She is my hero and has given me hope when I thought I was defeated. Everyone needs to know about this lady. She could save a lot of lives.
