Over 85 Recipeas, One Very Happy Family

When Sarah Matheny, creator of the popular blog Peas and Thank You, decided to eliminate animal products from her diet, she knew there'd be skeptics. Her husband was raised on the standard American diet. Her grandpa was a butcher. Her mom was the best home cook around, with a generous pat of butter here and a crumble of bacon there. But now Sarah is a mom who wants to feed her children right.

Out went the diet soda. In came the smoothies.

Out went the "nutrition" bars. In came the nutritious cookies.

Out went a tired, caffeine–fueled mom. In came Mama Pea.

Peas and Thank You is a collection of recipes and stories from a mainstream family eating a not–so–mainstream diet. Filled with healthy and delicious versions of foods we've all grown up enjoying, but with a Mama Pea twist—no meat, lots of fresh ingredients and plenty of nutrition for growing Peas. From wholesome breakfasts to mouth–watering desserts, there's plenty here to satisfy the pickiest Peas in your life. It's easier than ever to whip up crowd–pleasing meals that will have the whole family asking for, "more, Peas."

Title: Easily changing the way families eat
Review: Sarah Matheny is an inspiration!! She actually makes eating healthy, fun and simple. I stumbled upon her blog, peas and thank you, earlier this year. I was immediately hooked. Lord she is witty and her food is beautiful. When I received the cookbook yesterday in the mail, I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it down. I have already read several pages, (it reads like an actual book, not a cookbook.) and made a couple dishes. She includes such humorous stories and wonderful pictures of her family (and the food)--it makes you feel like you've known her forever. This cookbook is GENIUS! If you are new to meatless meals, she outlines everything so simply that everyone can cook like this. And, although she is very clearly vegan, she never makes the reader feel obligated to eat that way. Her wish is to help people eat better, and I think with this cookbook she has done just that.If you are looking for a cookbook that will help you eat better, and feel better, look no more!! This is the one for you. Thank you Sarah for making me WANT to eat each and everyone of these awesome recipes.

Title: Perfect for little tummies
Review: I can't say enough about this book, it is absolutely amazing! The author Sara Matheny (aka Mama Pea) knows her stuff. I have been following Mama Peas blog for close to a year now. She offers healthy, delicious meals for a family that are easy to prepare, easy on the wallet, and most importantly easy on the taste buds. I have already prepared several items in the book, as well as several from the blog in the past, and my family has enjoyed every one of them. She has a section in the book that explains the ingredints that she stocks in her kitchen and uses in her recipes. Most of the items are typical for any well stocked pantry. I love that she uses ingredients that are common and easy to find. You can easily prepare most of the recipes in the book with ingredients that you already have.Of cours the food is wonderful, but this book is full of stories and family photos. She can surely bring a smile to your face. I love that she has shared her family in the book. As a mom myself I am very interested in healthy, natural foods that I know my boys will not only benefit from but will enjoy as well. Because she makes recipes that her daughters love, I know that the recipes will be loved by my own children. I mean if it is good enough for a princess then it it surely good enough for my boys!A must have - even for a T-rex family like mine!

Title: Practical family cookbook.
Review: Good recipes. I enjoy the humorous family stories but she did go a little overboard with giant family portraits that aren't of much (if any) interest to most readers. This is an entertaining read by a talented and witty writer with tasty family-friendly vegan recipes that are simple enough to make. Yes, she uses some "shortcuts," for you holier-than-thou 100% from-scratch eaters. Believe it or not, not all of us have time to make our own seitan, pasta sauce from scratch, or soak dry beans, shockingly enough. These recipes are practical and fairly quick to put together. I especially enjoyed the Better Than Ever Black Bean Burgers Spicy African Peanut Slow Cooker Soup. (On a side note, however: it is strange that in the years since this and her 2nd book was published, Sarah turned away from veganism, abruptly deleted her very popular blog, and all but disappeared.)

Title: winner winner meatless dinner (and breakfast, and lunch)!!
Review: Mama Pea takes the cake (and shows you how to make it)! Aside from being a fantastic book filled with love and family tales Peas & Thank You is also a BRILLIANT cookbook. I don't know which I enjoy more, the fact that each recipe comes with a witty quip about her each of her daughter's obsessions (tutus + pickles), her husband's Tommy Bahama addiction OR the fact that her recipes are TOTALLY approachable, realistic and affordable. I love that her flavors are unique and bold enough to satisfy adult palates and still gentle enough to be welcomed by tiny tasters. I think she is a genius, the way she teaches you how to get a nourishing and tempting meal on the table and not be too exhausted and frazzled to actually sit down with you family and ENJOY it when the day is done. The gorgeous photos in the cookbook are drool-worthy. With sooo many tempting pictures it's nearly impossible to decide where to begin. Let me suggest, perhaps, the Almond Joy Cookie Bars. Or Un-toppable Black Bean Soup. How about a Crack Wrap? Yes, you can feed this to your kids--and they will LIKE it!I've had this cookbook for less than 24 hours and have completed three recipes and flagged probably a dozen more that are on my "make ASAP!" list. I will be giving copies of this book for gifts. You don't have to be a veggie, vegan or even health conscious to enjoy this cookbook (although that will be a nice side-effect). If you love food, or family, or sassy ladies who like their hairspray and aren't willing to trade mascara for microwaveable meals you will find a place for this cookbook in your home.
