A bursting-with-personality cookbook from Sister Pie, the boutique bakery that's making Detroit more delicious every day.

“Everything you want in a pie cookbook: careful directions, baker’s secret tips, inspired combinations, and a you-can-do-it attitude.”—Chicago Tribune

IACP AWARD FINALIST • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES AND CHICAGO TRIBUNE

At Sister Pie, Lisa Ludwinski and her band of sister bakers are helping make Detroit sweeter one slice at a time from a little corner pie shop in a former beauty salon on the city’s east side. The granddaughter of two Detroit natives, Ludwinski spends her days singing, dancing, and serving up a brand of pie love that has charmed critics and drawn the curious from far and wide. No one leaves without a slice—those who don’t have money in their pockets can simply cash in a prepaid slice from the “pie it forward” clothesline strung across the window. With 75 of her most-loved recipes for sweet and savory pies—such as Toasted Marshmallow-Butterscotch Pie and Sour Cherry-Bourbon Pie—and other bakeshop favorites, the Sister Pie cookbook pays homage to Motor City ingenuity and all-American spirit. Illustrated throughout with 75 drool-worthy photos and Ludwinski’s charming line illustrations, and infused with her plucky, punny style, bakers and bakery lovers won’t be able to resist this book.

Title: Different but tasty pies!
Review: I have been baking for over 30 years. I was skeptical if this book could really add to what I’ve learned. These pies are different. They are very good, but one piece is all you need. You will want another piece the next day so be warned. I will keep and use the crust recipe. It was easy and tasty and I have never used all butter before. I have so far made the rhubarb streudel, lemon meringue, and cherry pies. I thought the fresh Rosemary in the rhubarb pie was a perfect touch. The crust was flaky and held together. The lemon meringue was not like any other lemon meringue I have made before. It is more like a chess pie. I’m still out about whether I like it better than a traditional lemon meringue pie. The cornmeal is a new thing for me. I did like the meringue recipe and will be using that in the future no matter what.I’m looking forward to trying the cookie recipes. Overall I love the photos and the story of how the shop came to be. The author explains why she uses the techniques and ingredients she does which I appreciate. And it’s nice to know how to use my French rolling pin to roll out crusts. I’ve been clueless about that!If you already bake you will definitely enjoy this cookbook. There are even salad recipes in the back.

Title: Deliciously interesting cookbook that reminds you of Grandmommas kitchen sprinkled with a punch of funk!
Review: Beautiful story behind the book! The actual bakery is so inspiring and upbeat! The employees are extremely friendly and the atmosphere feels like I’m sitting in my grandma’s kitchen eating her pie and cookies and drinking her coffee! We thoroughly enjoyed every baked good that we tried in the bakery(between 3 of us we tried a lot!) but the sweet potato pie was the absolute best I’ve ever had! The cookies and some of their interesting ingredients like herbs or buckwheat flour may turn some people off but completely intrigued me to try not because they appeared to be some hipster bakery trying to be cool(it seems so 90s now anyway) but because this was an unpretentious bakery in an old building in a residential neighborhood that was bustling with so much activity and warm and fuzzies that I knew they must know a thing or two about flavors and boy do they ever! This is why I preordered the cookbook and it has not disappointed! The peanut butter cookies with paprika were a pleasant surprise and any of the shortbread cookies were crisp and well represented of the flavor they advertised as. What a story and what a cookbook, particularly if you love success stories from downtrodden areas like Detroit.

Title: sweet pie book
Review: The title and cover of this book grabbed me outright, I’d honestly like to own the book to go with the kindle edition I have now. It’s a great book with beginner friendly explanations and info about tools and ingredient (especially using good butter, though I prefer Organic Valley or Kerrygold to Plugra, bc Plugra isn’t hormone free). The recipes are wonderful and they have many sweet, some savory and even salad recipes that they serve at their Detroit Pie shop, Sister Pie. The kindle was very inexpensive, so grab that if you want to check it out first. I recommend it.We’re blessed with many great pie, baking and pastry books, I’m glad this is in my kindle collection.

Title: These are pies that are loaded with fierce imagination and unquestionable deliciousness
Review: I read this cover to cover and made the malted lime pie. there is nothing not to love, altho I messed up the blind baking instructions and will have to see if the crust improves the second time around doing it right. It has apple cider vinegar plus water to hydrate the dough! The photos are great and the instructions are also pretty good, but you will have to flip back and forth to get the whole story on composing a pie as the pie dough mixing is in a different place from the pie shell baking and the fillings refer back to these pages. If you love a pie challenge and new imaginative tastes straight from the heart of excellent bakers this is a great book. And I should know as my family has specialized in fantastic pies for many generations.

Title: A solid and unique cookbook
Review: I bought this cookbook a couple of years ago and it is excellent. The recipes are detailed and she gives a lot of useful background information to make you a better baker. Her pie crust recipe is amazing. I'd say the book is worth the price for that alone if you struggle with crusts as I did (now I don't). My favorite pie is the cranberry crumble. The book itself is of high quality. The binding and paper have held up well to all sorts of mistreatment such as splashes, buttery fingers, and setting heavy things on it.My only two gripes are that she uses volume measurements and the instructions are written assuming you'll do everything by hand (I will always use a stand mixer when I can). These are minor issues (memorizing 120 grams in a cup of flour is pretty much all you need to know to solve issue #1).

Title: Great pies
Review: We have a vendor with kit master that lives locally to this buisness and brings us pies once a year and they’re so amazing….. last year was the pecan and salted Carmel something I believe and this year was peanut butter chocolate something and salted maple. They’re sooo good. He is the one who told me they had a book. I really hoped the peanut butter brownie tasting one was in this book but the salted maple and the pecan one are so I’m stocked. Also want to try the marshmallow one yummmm and thanks to my vendor who spends $100’s of dollars in pies there for his suppliers.

Review: I purchased this book of Sister's Success Story, and their fabulous Pie Recipes, for my niece who makes "Birthday Pies"!!!!She loves it, but would have liked for the printed paper itself to have been of a better quality?Pie Recipes are her "Coffee Table Books" and Sister Pies would have been worth the cost of "glossy photographs"!!!!If you are a Pie Creator, this is the book to be added to your collection.
