An inspiring and no-nonsense guide for aspiring artists of all stripes—from “the most exciting individual in American theater” (Newsweek).
In vividly anecdotal letters to the young BZ, Anna Deavere Smith addresses the full spectrum of issues that all artists starting out will face: from questions of confidence, discipline, and self-esteem, to fame, failure, and fear, to staying healthy, presenting yourself effectively, building a diverse social and professional network, and using your art to promote social change. At once inspiring and no-nonsense, Letters to a Young Artist will challenge you, motivate you, and set you on a course to pursue your art without compromise.

Title: Give this book to every person about to start a new project of any kind.
Review: After reading the book, I ordered five more to give to new, up and coming artists... especially young actors. But the surprise of the book is how inspiring it is for anyone about to take on any stressful undertaking. It's kind of life-changing. Really really great.

Title: An true artist speaks to the artistic hearts of young people
Review: If there is a young person in your life who is leaning toward a life in the arts, no matter the art form, this is a book for him or her. The author writes in clear, unambiguous prose about her insights into a life on the stage, around the stage, and around a multitude of artists. She draws on the wisdom of living legends she has encountered and weaves it alongside stories of her own friendships based in creativity. She challenges budding artists to examine their own motives and prepare for a life in pursuit of passion. Having seen the author speak and perform live, I can say her book is just as honest and almost as thought-provoking. Enjoy her journey.

Title: Much more than its title implies
Review: I first read this book over a decade ago, as a middle-aged adult engaged in an attempt to live a more genuine, creative life (to use a couple of overworked terms). My own journey has had its ups and downs and still continues...and I find myself coming back to this book for inspiration and comfort from time to time. Although directed at young artists, I find it full of wisdom and compassion...valuable for just about anyone at just about any age.

Title: I misunderstood the book. It was in good condition
Review: I didnt realize that the writer is very young. I thought it was information from artists from the past.Im in my 80's, have been painting since I was a child, and showing my work professionaly at galleries.I think this is for young artists.

Review: I have the paper book version of this book and came on Amazon to buy the Kindle version. Disappointed that there isn't one! I LOVE this book. It is so well written and full of great advice for everyone and not just artists. It is about life, how you can "get through" it. I re-read it at least a couple of times a year.
