The social media star, recipe developer, and health blogger behind Veggiekins shares delicious vegan and gluten-free meals, influenced by her pan-Asian background and her personal journey to wellness.
Growing up in an international family, Remy Morimoto Park ate food from her parents’ Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese cultures; other family members’ French and Brazilian origins; and close friends’ Thai homes. When she began struggling with an eating disorder and problems with addiction, she turned to a vegan and gluten-free lifestyle and found herself drifting away from her family meals and childhood comfort foods, locking on to the cucumber sticks, grilled chicken salads, and bean burgers that dominate the popular diet and vegan spaces. But Remy’s rejection of meat dishes, and frustration in finding vegan meals while eating out at Asian restaurants, put a stress on potential ways to connect with family members and her heritage.
Turning her old comfort foods into inspiration for new dishes, she was able to strengthen her relationship with food, a crucial part in her recovery from addiction and disordered eating. It also gave her opportunities to explore traditional vegan diets in her cultures, including Korean temple food, Japanese Buddhist cuisine, and Taiwanese faux meats, and she found that the compassionate lifestyle that is a part of veganism was a pillar in her recovery.
In this beautiful, inspirational book, Remy offers elegant, easy-to-make plant-based takes on international and Asian-ish dishes such as:
Smoky Maple Tempeh BaconGreen Garden Soba Noodle SaladTaiwanese Five Spice Brussel SproutsSpicy Peanut RamenThai Basil TempehJapanese Kare, with Popcorn TofuPesto Pão de Queijo/Brazilian Cheezy BreadMiso Caramel Crème BruléeSesame Bark Chocolate
From breakfast to dessert and every meal in between, Sesame, Soy, Spice provides standout vegan and gluten-free recipes alongside thoughtful reflections on family, culture, and wellness. As Remy says, the recipes in this book are love letters to her family members, to the countries she’s lived in, and to her teenage self—the one who thought she had to reject the food of her culture to live authentically for herself.

Title: Miso Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies and more
Review: This cook book is worth it alone for the Miso Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, they are by far the best cookies I've made! This is my new favorite cook book! All the recipes I have tried have been delicious, and I can't wait to try more. Everything is vegan and gluten free, and if you don't eat that way intentionally, you won't miss them in these recipes.

Title: True Asian flavors
Review: Finally! I grew up with a Japanese mom but I have recently decided to cook more plant based. Other vegan books Iâve tried have very American flavors, which donât sit well with my taste buds. This book finally has the flavors Iâve been looking for while also being vegan! Iâm so happy to have found this.

Title: Great if you have access to an Asian market
Review: Pros- 5 recipes made thus far were very good after adjusting some a little for my taste (eg I don't like too much 5 spice powder so I decreased it)- beautiful photos for most (if not all?) recipes- the personal and family stories woven throughout are very sweet- appreciate the note that you can substitute regular flour if you aren't GF- no store-bought meat or cheese analogs- recipes are fun and different than your run of the mill chickpea salad or fried rice- I like that she gives starting points for the amount of salt and pepper to useCons- there is a decent amount of vegan butter as well as oil used throughout. It is easy to reduce in the savory meals but less so for baked goodsOther notes- it does require a few different ingredients that some people may not have access to locally- a few recipes are quite time-consuming, like the Chile crisp or veggie burgers, but most seem pretty straightforward- some ingredients are expensive at regular grocery stores, like 10 oz shiitake, 1.5 c worth of scallions, ceremonial grade match, but often cheaper at Asian stores (or even at BJs) and still cheaper than analogs- most recipes use the refined grain version, understandably as this is the preferred rice/noodle around the world; you could probably swap it for the whole grain if desired

Review: I've been following Remy on her social media channels for a while, and loved the recipes she'd shared on Instagram. I also found her lifestyle and journey very affirming for me (as a vegan who's also sober and had very similar life experiences). The photos in Sesame, Soy, Spice are absolutely stunning, and the recipes are all gluten-free and veganâand most of all, not intimidating at all. I love that she has a variety of offerings in the book: from comforting dishes that draw from her mixed heritage, to wonderfully innovative snacks, mains and desserts, and even mocktails! Remy also shares more about her personal story in the book, and it's so awesome to find out how her own trajectory has inspired her culinary appreciation and skills. I can't recommend Sesame, Soy, Spice enough!

Review: I was excited when this book arrived today. Iâve been following Remy on YouTube for a while, and the book did not disappoint! It has everything from snacks, drinks, salads, main courses and deserts, and everything looks like itâs pretty easy to make, which I love. I tried out the quinoa salad today (subbed quinoa for millet and raspberries for blueberries since itâs what I had on hand) and it was delicious! The unexpected addition of gochujang to the dressing gives this dish a unique flavour. If you like fresh foods with an Asian twist, I highly recommend this fun cookbook 🙂
