Title: A rare cultural treasure!
Review: It had always been one of my dreams to find and play the hymns of my childhood, that often still play in my head. Often I remembered the music, but not the name or words. With this compendium, I can find almost everything I am looking for. The four-part harmonies makes this useful for a choir, but I know my husband will enjoy choosing the bass line while I sing soprano as we entertain ourselves during this COVID year at home. I use the organ function on my Yamaha keyboard, which is set on a high stand, so we both can stand and sing out to our heart's content. Very easy to play on piano, extremely reasonably priced and a cultural treasure with 175 songs - with all verses. Intelligently indexed by title and first lines. Not just for the African-American community - I recommend this to any lover of hymns and gospel music or collector of American church or folk music.

Title: Lots of favorites
Review: I was raised in the Baptist church, though it has been many years since I've been in one. But looking through this hymnal, on page after page I found one or another old favorite tune leaping into my head. Regardless of your denomination, you are sure to find many songs worth singing here.This hymnal contains more than 600 songs, with four-part harmony for nearly all, though no guitar chords. It sticks to the traditional lyrics, retaining archaisms like "thou" and non-politically-correct terms like "men" and "father" where the original authors wrote them. There are some songs here which seem to have been dropped from some hymnals, such as "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic".One note -- while the book includes plenty of spirituals and gospel songs, these are outnumbered by what I would consider "standard" hymns and revival songs which are not specifically associated with African-American churches. I think this is a good thing, since it emphasizes how much musical heritage all English-speaking Protestants share.

Title: A gem! Keep the tradition alive!
Review: I bought this book because I wanted some traditional African American religious music to learn to play on my kalimba. This book is great, full of a diverse selection of music from African American Christian tradition. Here you will be exposed to some of the most beautiful, raw, and impactful hymns and spirituals ever created and you'll be able to play/sing them too! The litanies and responsive readings in the front of the book are awesome too. This book is a place where faith, black history and black culture all intersect into one beautiful masterpiece. You will not regret buying it!The one thing I will say is that if you are a kalimba player like me, you will have to transpose most of the songs. It's not too hard, but for new players it can be a bit daunting. For anyone on a piano or guitar, or for anyone whose got a chromatic kalimba, you'll encounter no issues!

Title: GREAT RESOURCE
Review: This is a wonderful volume with over 600 selections. My only critique is the paper ply. It is very thin and difficult to manipulate when trying to go from one hymn to another! This might be improved if several ribbon book markers were incorporated in the binding!

Title: Glory attack in one volume- a must buy
Review: African American Heritage Hymnal is nothing short of phenomenal. I wish I could give this hymnal more than 5 stars. In truth it is worth 20 stars. I am a Progressive Evangelical and I love to death music that is foot stomping, hand clapping and full of passion. This collection is good for congregations across the theological and denominational spectrum. It not only includes the hymns of our fathers and mothers but includes music from the contemporary worship, gospel and African American spirituals traditions. Many of these pieces I grew up with and many of them are new to me. Making a joyful noise unto the Lord makes me beam with joy and tears in my eyes and this collection is a must for any church musician, pastor, lay person or any person who lives vibrant Gospel music. As one of my favorite spirituals says, "I'm Gonna sing so God can use me- anytime, Lord, anytime!"

Während der Lockdownzeiten und der unsicheren Zeiten im Beruf wurde dieses Buch für mich zu einer Kraftquelle.Das Vomblattspielen und Singen dieser geschichtsträchtigen Lieder gibt mir seit Jahren immer wieder neu Hoffnung. Auf diese Weise kann ich mich an diesem Gott, den ich besinge, festklammern, wenn auch die Umstände gar nicht zu den hoffnungsvollen Inhalten der Lieder passen. Das Singen dieser Lieder verändert meine innere Haltung zu den Umständen. Das ist der Sieg, den der christliche Glaube besingt.
