Still, this is a book for beginners, not for intermediate or advanced users needing help with complex prompts. The book is comprehensive with a broad perspective, delving into many different uses of ChatGPT in the work environment, the home and elsewhere. Corbitt takes on the serious topics relating to societal impacts of AI as it grows more powerful, such as the potential loss of jobs. Title: Useful for business applications ... not for students!
Review: This is a very well-written book on not only what ChatGPT is, but how to use it, starting with the website to go to in order to begin. This was really nice, since another book I read on the usefulness of ChatGPT had very little practical information in it, and the links it did provide led to options that were expensive. Nice to know ChatGPT can be used for free! I’m a teacher, however, so wasn’t thrilled with the first example of using ChatGPT in this book, which essentially enables a student to cheat on a writing assignment, effortlessly producing a 2,000-word report with ChatGPT in two minutes, not a sentence of it his own. He rephrases it here and there and voila! He’s done, and gets an A. Not cool. Teachers are going to have to start giving all writing assignments in class, with old-fashioned paper and pens, no computers, cell phones, or earbuds allowed. As a teacher, I’m interested in how well my students are learning how to think for themselves, how to express their own ideas … not how well they’ve figured out how to use ChatGPT. I’m giving 4 stars to this book because it’s clear, concise, and useful for its intended audience, with only a few grammatical issues. That doesn’t mean I’m a huge fan of ChatGPT itself, at least, not for all applications of it. For business use, sure. For answering queries and managing your email, absolutely. But for students? Emphatically no. For them, the use of this program clearly facilitates the avoidance of learning, giving them the option of letting ChatGPT do all the work for them. I see this as just one more way to dumb down the next generation. I’m also an author and reader, and I don’t look forward to a future where the book market is flooded with ChatGPT-produced books, except perhaps for manuals and other non-fiction applications. I realize my own opinion is not going to stop the tide of “progress” – but I’m hoping we’ll still be able to tell the difference between an inspired work of fiction and a ChatGPT-produced imitation.
