A collection of John Nunn's best games from 1994 to the present day, annotated in detail in the same style as the best-selling Understanding Chess Move by Move. Throughout, the emphasis is on what the reader can learn from each game, so the book is ideal study material for those seeking to progress to a higher level of chess understanding. There is also entertainment in abundance: Nunn has a direct aggressive style, and many of his opponents in these games are ambitious young grandmasters from the generation inspired by Kasparov's dynamic chess. The book also includes all of John Nunn's compositions - problems and studies - with full solutions.

Title: Excellent games collection for stronger players
Review: I agree with the other reviewers that this book, notwithstanding its title, is really targeted at stronger players. Someone between 2100 and 2400 elo could get a lot out of this book; someone between 1900 and 2100 would definitely get something out of it; and someone rated lower than 1900 might struggle a bit. That having been said, for a stronger player it is one of the best annotated games collections out there. There is a lot of explanatory prose but also a lot o concrete analysis, although I never got the feeling that the analysis was just an engine dump. (An unfortunate tendency in some more recent games collections.) The variations given are all comprehensible to the human mind, albeit not necessarily without effort. Still, this is not a book where you can just quickly run through the games. This is a book to slowly work through, to pore over, and to savor.I have always felt that Nunn is one of the best chess writers out there. It is not just that his conclusions can be trusted (he obviously puts a lot of work into his books and his published analysis is a good as any out there); I also think he has a talent for avoiding simplifying things too much while still keeping things accessible to the reader. And he is one of a very few really strong GMs that also have a talent for teaching. (I would also include Botvinnik and Keres in the this rather select group, and virtually any chess book by these two authors is also worth reading.)There are a lot of insights, personal anecdotes, and thoughts about the professional chess world and the players that inhabit throughout this book. There are also some interesting essays in the back regarding chess publishing and the changing chess world. But the heart of this book is a collection of deeply annotated games, all gripping struggles which highlight the richness and complexity of chess. For an intermediate to advanced player willing to put in the effort, this book has a lot to offer. I give it five stars, because for the right person it is an outstanding book.

Title: Very much worth it.
Review: I’m an intermediate player(1400) and the book was very useful in many areas of play : as to why some moves were used over others. This gives variety of play according to mood. Have other books from Nunn which I like.

Title: Many hours of wonderfully instructive reading
Review: Since he is now more or less retired from active chess, John Nunn has taken advantage of his increased leisure time to bring his best games collection up to date, the present volume dealing with the years 1993-2003.John Nunn is well known for his detailed analysis of his (and other people's) games, and at times in the past this has led to some criticism on the grounds that the annotations get in the way of the game. Mindful of this, and taking heart from the success of his previous book ;UnderstandingChess Move By Move,' he describes his approach as follows: "I have tried to comment on every significant moment in thegame, keeping the explanations as general as possible and avoiding getting bogged down in too much analysis except where the position really demands it." The end result is a really wonderful collection of 46 games and part games, well up to the usual impeccable Nunn standard. The games alone would be well worth the money, but there are more goodies to follow. For there is also a section containing 25 studies composed by the author, and 18 problems, all with solutions. There are then two short final chapters, which I found particularly interesting. The first contains Nunn's views on the present state of the chess world, which are in general pretty pessimistic. He traces most of the problems to the Short-Kasparov breakaway in 1993, and he sees no reason to be optimistic for the future. The second short chapter deals with chess publishing, and the precarious situation facing both authors and publishers alike. He uses this opportunity to ventboth his frustration and wrath on Batsford in particular, with some justification as he and many others were treated very badly by Batsford in the 1990s and lost out financially. With John Nunn you always know that you will get good value for your money, and that is certainly true of this latest book. There are many hours of wonderfully instructive reading contained within its covers, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.
