Chicago author, Greg Borzo, recalls the city's celebrated lost restaurants.

Many of Chicago's greatest or most unusual restaurants are "no longer taking reservations," but they're definitely not forgotten. From steakhouses to delis, these dining destinations attracted movie stars, fed the hungry, launched nationwide trends and created a smorgasbord of culinary choices. Stretching across almost two centuries of memorable service and adventurous menus, this book revisits the institutions entrusted with the city's special occasions. Noted author Greg Borzo dishes out course after course of fondly remembered fare, from Maxim's to Charlie Trotter's and Trader Vic's to the Blackhawk.

Title: Delicious nostalgia and genuine insight
Review: This delightful gem of a book has so much to commend it, not least of which is the wide range of restaurants profiled, not just in the Loop but all over the city and covering everything from ethnic restaurants to themed restaurants to fine dining. There are tons of photographs and images, thoughtfully displayed close to the text on their respective restaurants (obvious, perhaps, but not always a given in books like this). I especially appreciated that Borzo provides commentary from customers and employees of many profiled restaurants, and the quotes are often the best part. He avoids the common trap of simply providing dates and street locations and biographies of owners (yawn) but instead focuses on colorful details and best-remembered details and menu tidbits. It is a necessary drawback that the commentary for any given restaurant is rather brief, but that is inevitable for a book that aims at giving a wide portrait of the diversity and sheer breadth of Chicago’s lost restaurants. I loved how this book balances fun nostalgia with thoughtful insight into Chicago’s culinary past.

Title: History and Nostalgia Combined
Review: Any Chicagoan of adult age will find something in this outstanding book to put a lump in their throat or a tear in their eye. So many wonderful dining places gone. Thanks to well-known Chicago author Greg Borzo and his prodigious research, however, not forgotten. But this volume will appeal not only to Chicagoans but also to anyone interested in the history of American restaurant culture. There is much to learn about changing tastes and the food preferences of our forebears. The many and well-chosen pictures are a special treat.

Title: Fascinating!
Review: This is a treasure of a book. Well-researched and full of fascinating facts and photos, this book will interest readers who are Chicago history buffs or who are just interested in reading a well-written book about decades of restaurant styles, menus and clientele. Highly recommend it. I am buying a copy for my 90 years old father who grew up in Chicago.

Title: Great Gift
Review: Got this for my dad's birthday and he was thrilled. He's spent decades enjoying Chicago restaurants (and mourning the best ones of days gone by that have since closed) and recognized many of those described in this book. Great gift for anyone who is nostalgic for Chicago and its restaurant culture.
