Title: Miraculous! Good for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike!
Review: This diet is nothing short of miraculous. This review is a bit long, but that is because we are so excited about the results of following The Blood Sugar Solution plan.My husband is not a diabetic, but has had high fasting blood sugar (in the pre-diabetic range) for the last 28 years. Now that he is approaching 60, he thought it was high time to get his sugar issue under control before it became full blown diabetes. It is worth noting that we are very healthy eaters, having been vegetarian for the past 20 years. He has had no weight problem and his overall health has always been great, hardly even getting a common cold. Yet, his blood sugar remained an issue in spite of his healthy lifestyle and he has been battling elevated cholesterol as well. But when you are young, thin and healthy overall, you tend to ignore these kinds of things. He decided it was time to stop ignoring it.He began over a year ago to try and get his blood sugar down. He first did the obvious and cut down on all sugar, refined foods, eliminated all soft drinks and removed anything with high fructose corn syrup. He bought a little test kit and kept close watch on his fasting blood sugar, but no change - it remained in the pre-diabetic range. With more research, he decided to add supplements that are supposed to lower blood sugar - such as cinnamon, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and others. He remained on those for several months, watched his blood sugar and still no change. Then in January his fasting blood sugar hit a new high of 132. After a year of doing everything he knew, eating whole organic foods, taking supplements, etc, he felt defeated and that there was no solution. We even wondered if his genetic makeup just meant that his sugar was meant to be on the high side. Again, he is thin and active and eats unbelievably healthy. That's when we bought several books on blood sugar. We have read 4 in all and this one is by far the most effective, most thorough, and easiest to follow. We both implemented the dietary guidelines immediately. I had 13 pounds to lose and I lost 3 the first week. But the real miracle was my husbandâs blood sugar. In one week his fasting blood sugar went from 132 to 82! It dropped 50 points in one week! We were shocked and thrilled! For us the biggest change was eliminating grains. Being vegetarian, we ate lots of grains. We were always firm believers in whole grains being healthy for you and we made them the basis of our meals. We ate grains with every meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) - never refined grains, always whole grains. Yes we ate veggies and fruits, but we could easily have been called starch-avores. After all, using grains as the basis of your vegetarian lifestyle has been the standard belief for years. So we eliminated grains and voila' - his blood sugar went into the normal range, first time in years. I lost weight immediately. The plan does include eating protein, which for most people means meat. For us we increased our protein by using tofu, nuts and seeds. Therefore this program works for vegetarian and non-vegetarians alike. Now after 3 months of eating this way, my husbands blood sugar has never again gone back up into the pre-diabetic range, his cholesterol came down to 180 (100 points less than previously) and his triglycerides made the most improvement having reached a high a few years back of 500 and after this diet they were 88. I have lost 9 pounds so far (only 4 more to go to be where I want to be) and my cholesterol and triglycerides have also come down in the healthy range (both have been elevated for 30 years in spite of trying everything I knew). We could not be more ecstatic about the results of following the directions of this book â it should be called the High Blood Sugar, Cholesterol and Triglycerides Solution. We are now experimenting with reintroducing grains back into our diets and we are learning just how much we can and cannot eat before seeing negative results. He has been able to eat small amounts of grains â only not daily, it has to be only a few times a week and never eaten in consecutive meals. The same goes for me or I will gain weight. We never realized how big of a negative too much grain consumption was. It took work and lots of adjustment, but the benefits are well worth it. We are feeling better than ever. The only draw back is that when you eliminate grain you greatly reduce your fiber intake. This has been a real challenge for us and we now have to take fiber supplementation daily. This book has proven to us that there is no reason to suffer from diabetes or to take any prescription medication for it, as well as for high blood lipids. They are curable. It is diet that causes it, so it is diet that reverses it. Why would anyone want to take a drug if it was unnecessary?! Some people do not like that Dr. Hyman has his own website, but this is silly as you do not need to buy anything from him to get healthy. The book is all you need, along with the will to follow it. Many people gave the book bad reviews but never followed the plan and in some cases never even read the book. Others didnât like the idea of spending extra money on supplements. You can follow the plan without any supplements and get all of the benefits. It is up to each person whether they want to be well or just find an excuse to not change anything. There is a wealth of information in this book above and beyond just blood sugar. It is filled with information on our food system and issues that affect each and every one of us. I would put this book on the MUST READ list!

Title: Traditional Physician's Perspective
Review: ]I will begin with a verbatim quote from page 293: "Getting and staying healthy in our modern world is a heroic feat. It is a subversive and revolutionary act. We have to navigate dangerous food landscapes, resist carefully designed temptations at every turn, fight marketing that goes right after our primitive hardwired survival impulses, and fend off food pushers, saboteurs, and a thousand distractions online, on television, and in the other media." I think Dr. Hyman should have started his book with these powerful and convincing words. This book is all about diabesity, the modern plague and global health epidemic that runs the gamut between mild insulin resistance and being overweight to frank obesity and diabetes. Diabesity affects over 1.7 billion people worldwide and is predicted to affect 50% of Americans by 2020. It is almost entirely caused by environmental and lifestyle factors and Dr. Hyman believes that it is virtually 100% preventable and curable using lifestyle modification. He rails against the "toxic triad" of big farming, big food, and big pharma that have helped create and perpetuate the problem and have profited from a nation of sick and overweight citizens.Overall, this is an excellent resource for diabetics, pre-diabetes and for that matter, anyone carrying the burden of extra weight. It is informative, well written and topical, as we are in the midst of an rampant obesity and diabetes epidemic. His website:[...] offers many additional resources that may prove helpful to the reader, although some will construe the site as a self-serving promotion of a myriad of products for sale.Dr. Hyman clearly explains the domino effect of sugar and high glycemic index foods that cause insulin levels to spike which in turn leads to belly fat accumulation; fat cells produce an abundance of inflammatory molecules called cytokines that cause further inflammation, insulin resistance and weight gain. When we factor in our sedentary existences; our genetic drive to obtain and store energy; the agri-business mass cultivation of corn, soybeans, wheat, feedlot livestock production; the industrial food complex engineering of abundant, cheap, seductive, ready available calorie-dense, convenience and junk foods that override willpower by stimulating reward centers in the brain; and aggressive food marketing, we have the perfect storm for the obesity epidemic. Paradoxically, obesity co-exists with malnutrition because of a diet predominantly of nutrient-lacking, high-caloric processed foods. The cornerstone of the solution to diabesity is proper nutrition as food is an extremely powerful medicine when used appropriately. A low glycemic diet ("slow" carbs) is the only diet that has proven effective since it does not spike blood sugar and insulin. There are no essential carbs as there are essential amino acids and fatty acids; nonetheless, carbs including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds are critical for our health because they include high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber and phyto-nutrients and phyto-chemicals. Other crucial measures are exercise, nutritional supplements, achieving hormonal balance, reducing inflammation, improving digestion, detoxification, enhancing metabolism, and stress reduction. The book devotes a chapter to each component of the solution. In my opinion as a physician, Dr. Hyman is over-zealous about the nebulous world of dietary supplements, many of which have not been proven to be effective.Mark Hyman, M.D. practices functional medicine--how our genes, environment, and our lifestyle interact to determine health or disease. He believes that aside from genetic factors, there are only five causes of all disease: poor diet, chronic stress, microbes, toxins, and allergens, all of which are capable of modifying the expression of our genes. The "continuum concept" is that there is a continuum from optimal health to hidden imbalance to serious dysfunction to disease. Anywhere along the continuum, we can intervene and reverse the process. Functional medicine is personalized, preventive, predictive, and participatory. With a focus on creating health rather than treating disease, the disease often takes care of itself. Essentially, disease disappears as a side effect of getting healthy. He includes many wonderful vignettes of patients cured with holistic means, but missing were case studies of those not cured. It is the author's perspective that medical specialization - organizing medicine by organs and diseases, by geography and symptoms- is flawed and has put modern medicine in dire straits. Although he makes some very cogent points, as a practicing clinical physician I found it disheartening that the book has quite a few touches of arrogance and a general condescending tone to those who practice conventional and traditional medicine. Although I am a firm believer in lifestyle modification first and foremost, there will always be an important role for medicine and surgery, and this is given short shrift in a book that will prove helpful to any patient who is overweight, pre-diabetic or diabetic. Truth be told, the best medicine is likely a hybrid of conventional and functional medicine. The most compelling take home message of The Blood Sugar Solution is "the power of food and lifestyle to prevent, reverse, and even cure most chronic illness, the cause of endless personal suffering and an unsustainable burden to our global economies and social fabric."Andrew Siegel, M.D.AUTHOR OF: PROMISCUOUS EATING--UNDERSTANDING AND ENDING OUR SELF-DESTRUCTIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD

Review: The first "bible" I used when dealing with my newly-diagnosed diabetes was "Diabetes for Dummies", which was excellent in helping me to fight the disease. Two months later, as I was beginning to slacken off in following what I had learned from that book, I was lucky to then hear about Mark Hyman's "Blood Sugar Solution", which I bought. I was newly inspired to continue following the information in both books, and four months after having been diagnosed with diabetes, I had lost forty pounds, lost eight inches in belt size, and was no longer diabetic. I still follow what I learned from both books, though less strictly, and nine months since first being diagnosed as being diabetic, I am still diabetic-free.

Review: I'm a doctor suffering from type 2 diabetes. I have been on oraledication for controlling my diabetes. I'm obese as well. So far it has been very tricky to manage my blood sugars. As I tried to have a tight control I was prone to have hypoglycemia and every time my blood sugars will drop I had to take something sweet to recover and I always ended up having ore than what I needed so result was a big rise in my levels. I was exercising but non of my exercise sessions went without an episode of hypoglycemia and eventually sweet intake and so on. I had to carry something sweet with me all the time just in case. I was anxious, had extreme sweet craving so much so that without realisation I was having sweets all day and my love for sweets was becoming an addiction because I was becoming an addict to my cravings. Now this book has totally changed my life. I haven't started to follow it 100% which I could not due to multiple reasons but I in tend to as soon as possible and I would recommend others to do as well. I have incorporated all the principles in my diet and am sticking to most of the ingredients and supplements recommended by Dr. Hyman in this book. I have started exercising too. I came off my diabetes medication straight away, I haven't had any episode of hypoglycemia since. I feel great , my focus is on getting healthy and managing my diabetes and as he says I'm loosing weight as a side effect, so far I have lost 7 pounds in 4 weeks. It's a bonus because I'm eating good quality food without being hungry.I would recommend you to buy this book if you really want to change your life and defeat diabetes, obesity, belly fat, poly cystic ovaries and sweet cravings. Dr humans stance is so understandable and makes so much sense that I have really started to wonder wether health industry really wants to treat diabetes or just keep selling their new drugs to us. Thank you Dr. Hyman for changing my life. I will carry the lessons and values you have taught me and help others to change their lives.
