Sweetbitter meets The Firm in this buzzy, pause-resisting debut novel - already optioned to Netflix - about sex and power in the halls of corporate America.

One of Buzzfeed's Most Anticipated Books of 2020, Cosmopolitan's Best Summer Reads of 2020, and the New York Post's 30 Best Summer Books.

Alex Vogel has always been a high achiever who lived her life by the book - star student and athlete in high school, prelaw whiz in college, Harvard Law School degree. Accepting a dream offer at the prestigious Manhattan law firm of Klasko & Fitch, she promises her sweet and supportive longtime boyfriend that the job won’t change her. Yet Alex is seduced by the firm’s money and energy...and by her cocksure male colleagues, who quickly take notice of the new girl. She’s never felt so confident and powerful - even the innuendo-laced banter with clients feels fun.

In the firm’s most profitable and competitive division, Mergers and Acquisitions, Alex works around the clock, racking up billable hours and entertaining clients late into the evening. While the job is punishing, it has its perks, like a weekend trip to Miami, a ride in a client’s private jet, and more expense-account meals than she can count. But as her clients’ expectations and demands on her increase, and Alex finds herself magnetically drawn to a handsome coworker despite her loving relationship at home, she begins to question everything - including herself. She knows the corporate world isn’t black-and-white and that to reach the top means playing by different rules. But who made those rules? And what if the system rigged so that women can’t win, anyway?

When something happens that reveals the dark reality of the firm, Alex comes to understand the ways women like her are told - explicitly and implicitly - how they need to behave to succeed in the workplace. Now, she can no longer stand by silently - even if doing what’s right means putting everything on the line to expose the shocking truth.

Title: Good job for a first book!
Review: In her first novel that reads like a memoir, I’m wondering how much of it is a real-life account of the author’s own experiences. The main character is both naïve about sleeping with someone at work and confident among the boys, fitting right in with drinking and drugging. The most compelling plotline centers around the firm’s clients from merely creepy to utterly terrifying acts of sexual assault and violence. This part of the book is original and thought provoking. The author knows how to paint vivid scenes, but the details grow tiresome. Do we need to know every time she takes a shower or checks her emails? We get a good picture of the time she ran out of toilet paper, but glosses over the private jet scene.Unlikeable characters are entertaining. I very much enjoyed watching this trainwreck, going along for the ride. I didn’t know where it was going, and I didn't want it to end.An easy five stars, I'd look forward to her next book to see what she can do!

Title: Reality
Review: Great book ... great writing. Unfortunately the subject matter remains nonfiction and still too true for women who want to succeed in their chosen arena but have to deal with life as we know it in America. Great book.

Title: Well written but unremarkable
Review: 3.5 stars. Good read… just nothing remarkable. Characters weren’t all that interesting and the book was predictable.

Title: exceptionally exciting
Review: I literally could not put this book down and read it all weekend. I so enjoyed it. There were a few really admirable attorneys and I really liked how their characters and relationships were built along the way. I think most anyone would enjoy this book.

Title: Should Be Required Reaing
Review: ****Although progress has been made within men’s world, and some glass ceilings have been cracked, female professionals in male dominated workspaces endure incredible pressures and dangers. For young Harvard lawyer, Alex, an opportunity to work at a prestigious law firm seems like a long imagined dream becoming real, until the demands of the job create nightmares from which she can not awaken.Unfortunately, unless women are prepared and forearmed with strategies and safeguards, they can too easily encounter the situations and dangers Alex endures. For Alex, her resilience, intelligence, and persistence enables her to navigate a clearer pathway.

Title: Intense page-turner rings disturbingly familiar if you’re female
Review: Despite never having practiced high-powered corporate law & graduating from a much less prestigious law school than Harvard, The Boys’ Club is a frighteningly relatable story. I doubt any of the boys in my class ever had a male professor ask them to give him a massage, or received a phone call from that same (drunk) professor on New Year’s Eve asking what they were wearing, or had a male peer question their presence in the program since “you’re just going to get married & have a baby & never practice.” (Disclaimer: I proceeded to marry a physician, have a baby, & barely practice, but that’s beside the point, lol). The Boys’ Club shines an uncomfortable light on the inequalities that still exist for women trying to make it in a “man’s” profession & brilliantly captures the myriad of micro-aggressions women use as weapons when they turn on each other in such environments. Add in smooth prose & fast pacing, and The Boys’ Club will suck you in, but beware if you’re hoping for a happy ending—there isn’t one.

Title: Misogynistic Work Experience
Review: Story of a young female lawyer in a large firm. Disappointing to see how she got sucked in by the system and inappropriate behaviors of the powers that be. I was relieved when the protagonist returned to earth (reality as seen by most people). She ultimately made difficult choices to improve her workplace. In my opinion, the book spent too much time spelling out bad behavior by the various players.

Review: I'd like to say this was surprising or eye opening, but not really. This is still the sad reality for so many corporate women, not just in big law. I hope this novel gets the attention it deserves, and makes a few people at least rethink their actions or reactions to unfortunately common situae. 5 stars for a compelling, well written read.

Title:
Review: Fast-paced and utterly enthralling. One hell of a debut.Alex Vogel is a first year associate at Klasko & Fitch. Star student and athlete in high school, pre-law whiz in college and with an Harvard Law School degree, she's extremely smart, hard-working and ambitious. It does not take long for her to be noticed by a couple of partners and a few associates in Merger & Acquisition, the highest earning and the most male dominated department in the firm. It's a cutthroat environment, where even those you thought your friends try to undermine you to get a leg up, but Alex actually thrives under pressure and is able to navigate office politics extremely well, establishing great relationships with partners, associates and charming new potential clients with her sharp wit.Her position in M&A grants her status, perks and money and she finds it all exhilarating. She soon realizes, however, that it comes at a very steep price: having to compromise her morals, losing her long-term boyfriend, having no life outside of work and not having time to take care of her physical and mental health. Until something shocking and horrifying happens to her, sending her spiralling. Having hit rock-bottom, she is forced to stop, re-evaluate her life and come up with a plan to move forward, trying to make sure that other women don't have to go through what she did.The writing is sharp and engrossing. You fly through the story in a matter of hours, both fascinated annd horrified by the events that unfold. You find yourself rooting for, empathizing with and trying to understand Alex, despite her being a flawed and, sometimes, not very likeable human being.
