“An explosive tell-all book.”—Sports Illustrated
“This is a must-read masterpiece.”—Paul Finebaum, ESPN college football analyst and New York Times bestselling author
Two of the nation’s most respected sports journalists team up for a vital, hard-hitting investigation into the tumultuous state of big-time college football.
We are living in the Wild West of college sports. Name, Image and Likeness endorsements, the transfer portal, collectives, conference realignment, the powerful influence of media companies have all rendered the notion of amateur athletics a quaint relic of the past, replaced by a Brave New World where money and self-interest rule.
The Price is a sweeping, in-depth, thought-provoking look at an inflection point in big-time college football. Six time New York Times bestselling author Armen Keteyian and award-winning national college football reporter John Talty conducted more than two hundred wide-ranging interviews with head coaches, athletic directors, conference commissioners, administrators, politicians, power brokers, agents and media executives from one corner of the sport to the other. They reveal never-before-reported details on major players such as Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, and Lane Kiffin. Keteyian and Talty’s reporting also lays bare the machinations that destroyed the historic conference that was the Pac-12, purely in the name of greed.
As the sport’s premier coaches race for the exits, Keteyian and Talty reveal deep, dark truths about a beloved game under siege—and the financial, physical, emotional and psychological toll taken on everyone whose dreams and fortunes often depend on the final score on a Saturday afternoon.

Title: Required Reading if you Like College Football
Review: Like college football or even basketball for that matter? STOP & READ THIS BOOK! This book picks many unique stories and how the new environment of conferences formed for TV money and NIL paid directly to players has impacted the "theoretical" amateur. Of course it wasn't really amateur when coaches were making over $10 million, a point brought up that it seems colleges lose money to pay coaches. What makes this book so strong is the many subjects it covers: how NIL has affected players including nonpayment of promised amounts, Alabama and its coach's love of the game in this change, U of Arizona family style successful football last year but this year with a new coach, U of Maryland & its resurgence & then loss of its quarterback, and Agent Jimmy Sexton and his control of college coaches salaries. Having paid substantial NIL yearly and worked in a company that owned Sexton's group for many years as well as serving on athletic boards at a college that has recently played a New Years Day Bowl, this book was not only of interest but required reading and I've been recommending it highly as it is a well-written informative study in the issues.Unfortunately, this is just the START of the changes: how do we allow player pay in the future, what happens when donor fatigue sets in, can college coaches salaries be controlled, who should administer college football the NCAA or big conference commissioners, as well as many other important issues. An excellent analytical book written in a fun informative manner. READ THIS BOOK!

Title: Most of the Information Has Been Revealed Before, But This Puts Things Together
Review: In "The Price," Armen Keteyian provides a comprehensive chronicle of college football's 2023 season, capturing the shifts reshaping the sport. While the book skillfully weaves together the significant storylinesâfrom NIL deals to conference realignmentsâmuch of the content will be familiar to those who follow the sport's headlines. However, Keteyian's talent lies in constructing a cohesive narrative from these disparate threads, offering valuable context and connections that might have been missed in the day-to-day news cycle. The book's strength is its ability to paint the bigger picture of college football's evolving landscape, though dedicated followers of the sport may find few revelations. Despite this, Keteyian's storytelling makes "The Price" an engaging read that effectively captures a pivotal moment and the larger-than-life figures in college football today.

Title: The decent read for anyone not in the industry.
Review: As someone who currently works in Athletics, reads multiple newsletters daily, listens to podcasts, and obviously reads books about the industry, this book is nothing new and does cover the current and former landscape of College Athletics, specifically football. That said it misses on a lot of key aspects and also will tug you around to just a few of the power players for a healthy chunk of the book. Saban to Jimbo, Jimbo to Harbaugh, Harbaugh to Dabo. Sometimes feels more like an insider fan blog than anything.By no means a bad read. You will definitely enjoy it and the stories it contains. Just feel maybe the title is a tad misleading.

Title: Must Read
Review: What a timely entry into the reporting around the changes in college sports. Iâm sure even the authors donât expect this to represent a true picture of the sport even a year from now. The changes are happening fast now and change is accelerating. As the authors lay out, the transformation has to do with the rejection of the myth of the concept of the student athlete, and embracing the reality of Division I college football as an NFL minor league. This is unfortunate because it destroys a lot of the old institutions and practices embedded in the NCAA, but my takeaway was that the NCAA has outlived its usefulness as most courts seem to agree.Great book. Insightful authors. Will leave you more educated, but possible sadder.

Title: The State of College Football Today
Review: This a very important five star read for a college football fan. It was very well done and it allows the reader to understand NIL and basically the high school football star goes to a college that provides the most money for his services. A sad state of affairs as the rich get richer. One just needs to look at the SEC to see the impact of NIL money, especially at Georgia and Mississippi. Like it or not itâs the world we live in today and will you finish the book with a much better understanding of college football. A must read for football fans !
