Title: Helpful guide for the uninitiated
Review: I used this for my son and now for my grandson. Short quick summaries that give you an idea as to the student body. Nothing is ever perfect

Title: Listings do not describe what is distinctive about each school
Review: I think the Fiske Guide is much more helpful. This book lists each college on two pages with the first page some general overview that includes a few quotes from students. For the most parts the student quotes are very generic ("good attention from professors") and nothing specific you can use to distinguish the school. The second page of each write up includes the application instructions for the school, copied straight from the school website, with little difference in this information between schools. This ends up being wasted space. All in all I thought that this guide was not at all useful and I regret purchasing it.

Title: Received a Worn, Used Book
Review: I preordered this book more than 3 months ago and it arrived today. The book I received is very clearly used. The covered has been creased open, the back cover is mangled and has a very distinctive used look to it, and the page edges are worn. I have no idea how a pre-ordered new release can arrive used/worn. Was this the tester book that was sent around for people to read? Regardless, I’m annoyed and disappointed. If I didn’t care about having a mangled, used book then I would have bought one at a used book price. I wanted new, paid for new, and got it used. Ridiculous.

Title: Fails to provide accurate descriptions of schools
Review: I’m not sure if it stems from trying to avoid being sued, but this book is afraid to say anything unflattering about any of the schools. The result is that every write up sounds the same, and it’s impossible to get a feel for what it’s like to attend the school. For example, the BYU sections makes no mention of the extremely strict honor code, and the consequences of breaking it, only that ‘the school “has clear guidelines and expectations as to the conduct of its students”’. It usually fails to mention if a school is a commuter campus with most freshmen living at home, or what the dorm situations are like. Every school pretty much has a Campus Life rating between 80 and 95, every school is selective, every school has lot of fun clubs, etc. I wanted a balanced picture of these schools, and this book isn’t any better than stapling 389 college brochures together.
