Title: The Authority in Colleges
Review: This book is invaluable for anyone looking at colleges. The insights come from students and there’s a wealth of information on each 2 page listing for the 385 schools. The only knock (not enough to lose a star) is that all “University of” listings are lumped together. Other guides helpfully list the schools by the place that follows “University of” such that, for example, Florida State and Florida are within a page or two of each other. This would make for much easier reference.

Title: Wonderful resource to keep on your kitchen table
Review: My son has so many online resources to research schools, but having a hard copy book on the kitchen table has him leafing through it during breakfast and other times. He's discovered schools that weren't on his radar. The upfront categories that point readers to schools catering to different majors are invaluable. He's interested in computer science and mechanical engineering, so he has dog-eared schools around the country strong in those disciplines. The standard measurements are helpful -- I've built an Excel sheet that captures several criteria for each of his targeted schools, like Quality of Life, % of students returning for sophomore year, % of students graduating in 4 years, avg. low/high SAT, etc. I do use online searches for total cost of the schools to plug into the spreadsheet. Being able to sort the Excel sheet for each criterion is very helpful.
