Title: Very Interesting
Review: In the times of Handel a composition would last only a few days and all the elite had heard the composition and then he had to have something new. When he did the Messiah when the main theme was done the King stood up and pledge to the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Title: Loved this book
Review: This book was very imformative and a very easy read. Having the historical perspective along with the musical output was very interesting. It is always interesting to learn about the mindset of the composer along with the constraints he is faced with while he is producing his music. I would recommend this book very much.

Title: excellent book
Review: This book was used with a fifth grade home school boy and was meant to be read one chapter a week. He often complained that he wanted to keep reading! I can't think of higher praise.

Title: Mixed review
Review: I'm a read-aloud Mom with a family of boys. We took our gang to a performace of Handel's Messiah this year; I bought this book and a wordbook of the text of the oratorio with illustrations by Barry Moser to get them ready and give them context for the piece. Messiah: The Wordbook for the OratorioSo, this book -- Charles Ludwig's biography of Geroge Frideric Handel -- started well. The first four chapters were impressive. It is interesting to read about a person who was devout behaving... well, devoutly. You get this all the time in biographies of Muslims (Ibn Battuta, Saladin, etc), but it is much rare for a biography of a Christian to show the Christian turning to particular scriptures and applying the scripture to life. So that was well done. The book went downhill around chapter 9 or ten. Handel goes to London and gets political patronage, and then it is just swings of the pendulum as his music is popular and his spirits are high, then his music is unpopular and his debts mount. This goes on for 10 chapters -- popular, unpopular, popular, unpopular. Got it. One of my kids wondered whether Handel wasn't "a bit slow on the uptake, eh?" always composing Italian opera for a disinterested London public.I'm glad we read it, and it has a good ending, but this book could have been as informative at 75 pages as it was at 176 pages.

Title: It was okay
Review: I only got to page 30 when the book binding broke and there was a name written in the book, both of which resulted because it was older. But the book itself was very factual and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to any person that is interested the the early life of Handel.

Title: The Book misleads
Review: This book was written for the Evangelical Christian community and was not written for educated musicology educated people. Although some of the information was valuable, most of it was very shallow. The mere title ought to be a give away. Handel, composer of the Messiah. Handel's compositional output exceeds Mozart and equals Bach. He was one of great composers of all time. Sadly, the author chose to concentrate on his religious life and beliefs, which is quite unknown in reality. He was obsessed with music and not religion.
