The cast and crew of a hit British TV show are rumored to be cursed—but are these spooky deaths coincidences or murder? It's up to Bath detective Peter Diamond to find out.
In the six years since the start of the hit British TV show Swift, its cast and crew have been plagued by misfortune, beginning with the star actress’s pulling out of the show before it began. By now there have been multiple injuries by fall, fire, or drowning; two deaths; and two missing persons cases.
The media quickly decides it’s a curse, but who’s to say there isn’t a criminal conspiracy afoot? Now that the filming has moved to Bath, Peter Diamond, Chief of the Avon and Somerset Murder Squad, is on the case. While the investigation into one fatal accident is underway, a cameraman goes missing, challenging even the most credulous to wonder if he might have been the victim of foul play rather than a jinx. How can so many things go wrong on one set in such a short time?
Complicating already complex matters is the fact that Diamond’s boss is trying her best to get him out of her hair; he may be forced to retire if he can’t solve the case. Will this be the end for Peter Diamond?

Title: One of the Best in the Very Good Series
Review: Here are two ways that you can know that this is a strong series of mysteries: (1) this is the 21st book in the series and I have read them all and (2) I pre-ordered this book and paid full price for it. The series of police procedurals features Peter Diamond as the lead detective on serious crimes and murders in and around Bath, England. This episode was one of the best in the series. The investigation is centered around a television crew filming an action-based show in Bath. Is it jinxed? It has certainly been plagued with unexpected deaths and disappearances. With no bodies found for the disappeared, it is not clear to the boss that there are murders to investigate. It all leaves Detective Diamond perplexed and determined to get to the bottom of the mysteries. The plot is complex and interesting. Motive, means, and opportunity are all murky. There are murders, but no gory details. There is no sex. The language is ordinarily inoffensive for all but the most sensitive. The pacing is very good, so the pages turn quickly. Through the course of the series the lives of the continuing characters change and evolve, but the stories themselves will stand alone. You might prefer to read them in order, but it is not necessary. The Peter Diamond mysteries are better than most of the other mysteries out there. They may not be quite as good as the literary mysteries by Ann Cleeves, Elly Griffiths, Martin Walker, Louise Penny, Jane Harper, Paul Doiron, Jean-Luc Bannalec, Iona Wishaw, or Andrea Carter, but they are very good.

Title: A TV crime series attracts true crime
Review: Chief Inspector Peter Diamond gets interested in the bad luck afflicting a popular TV crime series. Accidents, deaths and disappearances plague the show. The newspapers call it a jinx. Diamond sees it as a possible cloak for crime. The investigation is slow going at first. Blood can be found â but no bodies. And motive is elusive. But the plot turns out to be twisty and clever, with plenty of surprises.Diamondâs team is appealing, and there are plenty of interesting characters. My favorite was a cultured vagrant with a huge terrifying dog.I have enjoyed every book in the Peter Diamond series.

Title: Slow takeoff - 4-
Review: This is one of my favorite series, but I was ready to call it quits halfway through this particular novel. It seemed that the storyline was very never going to get off the ground, with a classic procedure that kept adding suspects, but not much in the way of progress toward a solution. At the same time, protagonist, Chief of the Bath Murder Squad, Detective Inspector Peter Diamond starts a sudden slide into a crisis of confidence, and begins to mutter about retirement. Author Peter Lovesy eventually rescues everything and everyone with an inventive conclusion that resembles pulling a proverbial rabbit out of a proverbial hat. An okay read, but not Lovesey's best effort, in my opinion.

Title: Another winner
Review: Another absorbing puzzle for Peter Diamond, and a great read for us. Diamond sets out to unravel a string of sinister events plaguing a popular television show, with the prospect of involuntary retirement hanging over his head. Another worthy entry in a great series -- long may it run!

Review: I always enjoy Peter Lovesey's books - especially the ones featuring Peter Diamond. Showstopper was no exception. Mr Lovesey does so much research into various subjects and he uses it to give verisimilitude to the story. Showstopper is about disappearances and murder and the backdrop is a TV company making a very successful tv series. The characters were convincing in that they were described so well that I did not mix them up. Some of the characters were amusing, some sad. A new face on Supt Diamond's squad was good, as was Paul Gilbert using his iniative and earning the respect of his colleagues. The plot, as are most of Mr Lovesey's, was clever, well constructed and I really did not see the end coming! Crime fiction is not for everyone. Mr Lovesey is, in my opinion, one of the best writers in the genre. I am hopeful there will be a 22nd book in the Diamond series - if not I'll re-read all of them!

Review: As ever ,the truly consistent Lovesey doesn't disappoint . His descriptions of the film sets are really brilliant as are the Bath environs. Some good team work writing and the odious Assistant Chief Constable does a great job with her box-ticking agenda.Perhaps a little too much introspection from DS Diamond and maybe the mannerisms start to creak after such an extensive back list . A good ending though ,and at this price a real bargain . Peter Lovesey still writes in the best traditions of the Golden Age ,whilst keeping up to date .

Review: I've read all the Peter Diamond series of detective novels by Peter Lovesey. I came across them a few years ago and promptly read them all. They are set in the historic city of Bath and this latest book about a series of mysterious happenings on the set of a popular TV series takes us into some of the pretty towns in the area. I enjoyed every word.

Review: I have read lots of Peter Diamond Mysteries and haven't found a dull book yet! This one which is about the murders that occur during the filming of a TV series was very absorbing and I enjoyed it very much. The author did a previous one that was set in a theatre which was similar in some ways in that it was about show business but all other aspects of the story were unique to these murders and their solution. As always Diamond is being chased to get a result by Georgina his superior. I strongly recommend this book.
