‘Joyful, life-affirming, greedy. I loved it’ – DIANA HENRY

‘Whether you are an avid cyclist, a Francophile, a greedy gut, or simply an appreciator of impeccable writing – this book will get you hooked’ – YOTAM OTTOLENGHI

The nation’s ‘taster in chief’ cycles 2,300 km across France in search of the definitive versions of classic French dishes.

A green bike drunkenly weaves its way up a cratered hill in the late-morning sun, the gears grinding painfully, like a pepper mill running on empty. The rider crouched on top in a rictus of pain has slowed to a gravity-defying crawl when, from somewhere nearby, the whine of a nasal engine breaks through her ragged breathing.
A battered van appears behind her, the customary cigarette dangling from its driver’s-side window… as he passes, she casually reaches down for some water, smiling broadly in the manner of someone having almost too much fun. ‘No sweat,’ she says jauntily to his retreating exhaust pipe. ‘Pas de problème, monsieur.’

A land of glorious landscapes, and even more glorious food, France is a place built for cycling and for eating, too – a country large enough to give any journey an epic quality, but with a bakery on every corner. Here, you can go from beach to mountain, Atlantic to Mediterranean, polder to Pyrenees, and taste the difference every time you stop for lunch. If you make it to lunch, that is…

Part travelogue, part food memoir, all love letter to France, One More Croissant for the Road follows ‘the nation’s taster in chief’ Felicity Cloake’s very own Tour de France, cycling 2,300km across France in search of culinary perfection; from Tarte Tatin to Cassoulet via Poule au Pot, and Tartiflette. Each of the 21 ‘stages’ concludes with Felicity putting this new found knowledge to good use in a fresh and definitive recipe for each dish – the culmination of her rigorous and thorough investigative work on behalf of all of our taste buds.

Title: Food and wine and a bicycle trip through France - what a combination!
Review: A fun book about one woman’s pilgrimage around France on a bicycle to discover regional delicacies… and the best croissants. What results is a humorous tale of food, friendship, and adventure. As someone who enjoys travel, food and memoirs, this was bound to be a good read. I’d certainly recommend this if you enjoy any, if not all, of those subjects!

Title: Great humor- love letter to French food
Review: From Amazing to hysterical—the author determines to cycle Around France eating her favorite foods. Planning is not her strong suit, and her mishaps are as funny as her planned escapades! A fond look at France and the best food, tracking croissants as she goes. A great fun book!

Title: This book will mean more to a cycleist
Review: Love reading about France, enjoyed the travel log, not much into paragraphs on riding. The receipts would ha been raiser to follow if not in metrics. All in all not the best read but informative

Review: I'm full of admiration for the writer - a fit and very capable cyclist, a great outlook on life, she made the food sound good even though I'm not a foodie, and it takes guts to do it, quite often on her own, as she did. She sounds a fun and likeable person, and her style is friendly and amusing without the trying-to-hard that afflicts so many books. She also manages to drip in quite a lot of info on France without it sounding like the clunky dumping of research efforts.Just to note a couple of minor negatives. The writing gave me no impression of whereabouts she was in her tour at each stage: almost half way? near the end? For some reason, I think it's important in a tour book to have that info at all times, and reading on Kindle, I can't quickly see by looking at pages read v pages not read. My second negative would be, the book is too long, and I was hoping for the end before it came. It's 330 pages, and 200 would have been enough for me.But they are minor quibbles. The fact that she is a professional writer, and therefore kept the pace, the mood, and my interest going throughout, puts the book at the top of the (quite large number of) bike tour books I've read.

Review: Entertaining and interesting book. Would have preferred some maps or diagrams as to the progress of the writer around France hence 4 stars not 5. Overall a good buy.
