Title: some advantages over other testing companies
Review: I've done DNA testing with all of the major companies now. And I've been at this DNA stuff for almost 15 years now.* I found the ethnicity estimate to be just about equal to everyone else. You can get more detail running your own models via gedmatch but for the curious or beginner, this is the easy result. If you just want to know whether you need a kilt or lederhosen or green beer for the next holiday seasons then this works as well, with many particular limitations, as any of the others.* There's no medical interpretation - most don't anymore. You can get good medical results running your raw download through Promethease for a few bucks. If you want to know medical propensities then Ancestry won't help much on its own.* The relationship calculations are pretty accurate and the database is huge. Compared to my other tests, this one returned far more and much closer connections. If you're looking for birth parents and such, this is the place to start. Just remember that the calculator is an estimate and other possibilities exist.- The sampling process was simple "spit in a tube, mail it in" - I much prefer cheek swabs but this gets the job done.- Time was super fast for me - 4 weeks from mail-in. I have a test out with one company that is nearing 3 months to process.- The user interface is pretty simple for newbies but doesn't offer much in the way of analysis tools for those who have DNA experience. Gedmatch can makeup for the shortfall in analysis tools if you can get your matches to upload there.- The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly easy genealogical research to confirm/refute family connections.- The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly prevalent errors in family trees.- yDNA and mtDNA predictive markers are hidden in these results if you want to make an effort to dig them out.- The marketing of this tester has created a large database of folks who were only interested in ethnicity and admixture estimates who have no interest in and won't reply to genealogy queries. Many haven't logged back in since they got their results back. There seem to be a lot of customers who forgot that molecular biology, human origins and migrations geography, and world history weren't their best subjects in school and were expecting this to return an easy result to "grasp it all" in a few minutes. The more you want to dig, the more complex the understanding will become. "DNA for Dummies" is a master's degree - "All You Ever Wanted to Know..." is a PhD. If you get hung up on needing to understand it all in a few short hours then you're going to get very frustrated. Take it in a little at a time.Having spent many $1000's on this hobby over the years, I'm very pleased with this $70 investment into understanding who I am and where I came from. Your mileage may vary.

Title: Great deal
Review: I got mine on sale. Great deal. Testing was easy and fast. Tracing my family heritage. I only have two issues1) it doesn’t show Native American dna heritage2) to fully trace my roots I will have to pay a monthly fee to ancestryOtherwise it was a great deal, quick and easy.

Title: Got DNA Test as Fun Project. Very Intriguing!
Review: Great Product. My folks traced our ancestry, but this was still interesting & surprising. I learned that both my friend & myself had ancestors from Scandinavia to Central Africa!

Title: Seems to be accurate, fun way to learn family heritage
Review: I have been interested for some time in finding more about my DNA and family makeup. The biggest thing that had prevented me was the cost. I personally think these are a bit overpriced at 99 bucks, but they do go on sale from time to time and I managed to get mine at a more reasonable cost of 59 dollars instead during the holidays. If you want to find out more about your heritage though, access to the ancestry database costs more. It appears from some of my early queries of some of the family information that the database doesn’t always include the last couple of decades of information though. There is a two week trial with the database.Included in the box are the instructions, a pre-paid mailing box, a plastic, sealable bag, and the saliva container. The instructions are pretty clear as you have to register an account on the Ancestry website and activate the kit so that you can get the results. The hardest part is making sure you have enough saliva to fill the vial. The preserving solution in the cap is a bit of a pain to get to release into the vial as you are supposed to tighten the cap which is supposed to release the solution, which took a couple tries of loosening the cap and retightening to get to work. After mailing, the results are supposed to be returned within 6 to 8 weeks. Even being around the holidays, it only took about 4 to 5 weeks to get the results.Granted, there were no big surprises for me but the test does appear to be accurate. It accurately told me where our family migrated to and based on what I know of my family, the majority of the percentage of my DNA test matched the regions of the world that I knew about. There were some new things I learned about my DNA makeup in terms of some of the other mix in my DNA, which I found interesting though. It would be nice for a few more DNA details, but it is possibly the limitation of the current technology of the testing.Unfortunately for me, there were only 2nd cousins and higher listed in the DNA match that had also taken the tests, but it was interesting to learn some new names in the family tree. The in-laws also took the tests and the DNA test accurately matched to their daughter. Whew, no milkman there. Hopefully the database will grow over time with more matches. Granted there are some limitations to this type of DNA test but this should be something everyone should take so that everyone can learn like I did that we are all a mix of a variety of ethnic histories. This is a really interesting way to find out more about your family history.4 stars

Title: This was so much fun
Review: My husband had taken one before and told me I should take it to find out my ancestry. The process of submitting it was very easy and the instructions were clear. I waited around 3 weeks for my results. It has been so much fun finding out where my ancestry is from. I got my whole family curious after they saw my results. My father even had my grandma and all her sisters involved to figure out where my 1% finish genes came from. It was a great way to talk about everyone who came before me.

Review: I bought this product on sale, so didn’t pay full price. It took two or three months to get my results back, but I really enjoyed exploring them. The nationality results are a bit vague (one of my significant nationalities was Scottish, but the area on the map included Ireland, England and the northwest part of the continent). There is a family tree feature on Ancestry.com that allows you to find relatives and ancestors. I recently received a message through Ancestry from a relative of mine in England who was doing family research and saw our connection, which was cool.

Review: This is an excellent starter kit for anyone interested in learning more about or understanding their ethnic roots. We tend to think we're British or Afro/Caribbean, American or European or whatever. The truth is often surprising. DNA testing for ethnicity is still relatively young, but the database is growing and having taken this test, I'm both surprised, impressed and convinced by the results. My roots are diverse. There was no way that could have been known by Ancestry as I'm not a member. The test is easy; you provide a saliva sample in a tube, seal it and send it. Postage prepaid. Sit back and wait for results. Mine took 5 weeks, with a couple of progress updates. The readout is informed and comprehensive. A pie chart ethnicity breakdown with detailed region specific analysis and an illustrated history. Possible socio/economic influences which are likely to have affected movement of people. In my case, the overwhelming Scottish DNA profile was unexpected, but with the explanation of the story provided by Ancestry, it makes sense. Also some interesting genetic connections to Andeans and native Americans which were a surprise. The results also identify possible people matches; Ancestry members to whom there's a direct connection. I've contacted a couple on my list and unearthed some family detail which is new to me.This is a basic test. There are other mitochondrial kits for the maternal line, specifically and another for the paternal side. But they're more expensive. The Ancestry DNA ethnicity test is an excellent introduction to who you really are. I'm convinced the results are accurate and relevant, impressed with the detail provided and there's loads of ways to add more info without actually subscribing to Ancestry. This is more than fun, it's a building block for a bigger story. Excellent value

Review: I bought kits off the Ancestry website previously and had to wait a long time for delivery since it comes from Europe. I needed a kit for my grandma and the kit was on sale here with the free delivery as well, so thought I would order and see how it went. I got the kit in two days. Exact same thing I had ordered previously from the website. So your saving yourself shipping costs going this way as well as quicker delivery. Great deal!*also for those complaining it doesnt match where there family comes from , dna isnt the land your standing on. My grandfather came from Ireland but they are actually Scottish. There were in Ireland a great number of years but married others who were scottish. So when people argue they know they cane from England your dna isnt a land mass. It's also like putting your hand into a marble bag. You might not get everything in your parents and that's why the more family members you test the more you know. Your siblings can show different nationally percentages. Also you can save your dna zip file off site and use it in other sites with varied info.
