Every Dog: A Book of Over 450 Breeds packs in a lot of information. Illustrations, text, charts, tables and icons make it an ideal reference for all dog lovers, who will enjoy flipping through the pages.

The over 450 breeds are thoroughly researched and represent canines from around the world. They range from rare breeds for the dog lover that wants something different, to the favorite breeds that make for a reliable choice. There are ancient breeds and modern breeds, including the "designer dogs" that have become so popular in recent years.

The over 450 breeds are organized into various categories, such as type (which share loosely common ancestry and traits), purpose, and more. For example, Spitz-Type Dogs typically have thick and dense fur, pointed ears and muzzles, and puffy tails that curl up and over their rears. They descend from ancient breeds that came from Arctic regions. Spitz dogs include the Akita, Canaan, American Eskimo, and the Pomeranian.

Each breed is described on one page and includes these details:

English and any alternative names, place of origin and year of first known introduction Icons and keys indicating all available coat colors; exercise requirements; graph indicating average weight, height and life expectancies At a Glance chart rating Intelligence; Ease of training; Affection; Playfulness; Good guard dogs; Good with children; Good with other dogs; and Grooming required. Descriptive text and a brief history of the breed Two color photographs, one adult and one puppy.

Every Dog: A Book of Over 450 Breeds is a fabulous reference. In addition to the hundreds of breeds of all type, origin and purpose, the book includes the many designer breeds developed over the last couple of decades, making it undoubtedly the most up to date and detailed breed book currently available.

Introduction

No other mammal — and certainly no domestic animal — has been transformed by human requirements (or their aesthetic whims) into such a broad range of shapes, sizes, and coat textures as the modern-day dog. The towering Irish Wolfhound and the diminutive Chihuahua are the exact same species, as are the narrow-skulled Borzoi and the blunt-faced English Bulldog. And though most dogs were "engineered" to perform specific tasks, certain dogs were bred solely for a fashionable appearance or a pleasing nature.

Most researchers agree that dogs were descended from the gray wolf of central Asia, canis lupus, and domesticated from 17,000 to 14,000 years ago. It is believed that their relationship with man first started with scavenging wolves picking over the remains of animal carcasses discarded near human camps. Perhaps a bold wolf puppy wandered into the camp and was fostered by the humans.

By the time of the first recorded histories, dogs were already entrenched within human society.

Title: The most informative book of dogs!
Review: I bought it for my husband, received it on Friday and he hasn't put it down. He has dementia and it is the first time I've found something to keep him interested. The pictures are high quality, the pages are thick, and the information is off the charts! If you are contemplating getting a new dog, but not sure what, get this book.

Review: Bought this as a gift for my father in law who’s looking to get a new dog but can’t decide which breed to get. It has a pretty complete list overall and lots of important information about each breed without giving so much info that it becomes overwhelming! A great book!

Review: I realised my knowledge of dogs had started lacking again and wanted to have something I can keep next to me at work (doggy day care) and it’s become very handy. Other employees even read it! Although I do find it interesting the Borador can live to 16!! I have two 12 year old boys and that made me really happy to read that. Although I wouldn’t call them a designer breed, they’re very much companion dogs like the lab

Review: Not much to dislike as for those I researched from other sources generally agreed with the information provided. All data regarding each breed is clearly displayed - mostly on a single page. Average lifespan, adult height and weight are shown in an easily deciphered bar graph. The history of the breed and common health issues are each shown in a box format. Common colouring is also presented. Most importantly, the format remains consistent throughout the book. Pictures mostly include one of the adult as well as the puppies.
