Comparing the science behind Embark test kits DNA Tests (Genetics)

Relies on genetics. Provides insights such as breed mix, genetic health conditions, and relatives (and more) based on a detailed view of a dog's genome and microarray technology. A dog's genetic code that's present from birth does not change.

Age Test (Epigenetics)

Relies on epigenetics. Provides estimated age based on DNA methylation patterns - a chemical modification that can change how genes work, while not changing the actual genetic code of DNA. As dogs age, the level of DNA methylation changes in a predictable way and we use that analysis as a "clock".

How is Age Test different from Embark’s other DNA tests?

DNA Tests analyze your dog’s DNA sequence that was present from birth. Our Age Test analyzes how a dog’s unique life has impacted the structure of their DNA.

Do I need to swab my dog again if I’ve already used an Embark DNA test?

Yes. Age Test follows a different process in the lab and we can’t use the same swab for Age Test and our other DNA tests. Each test is run separately and requires its own swab.

Why is the turnaround time for the Age Test longer than Embark’s other DNA tests?

Age Test involves a special processing step during DNA extraction that allows us to measure methylation. This step requires additional time, making the turnaround time slightly longer than that of our other DNA tests.

How do I return my dog's sample?

Title: Great and Fast!
Review: We adopted a dog in January and have no idea how old he is! We got it the next day and it took about a week for Embark to get our sample. We are waiting on the results but are so excited to find out our babies “birthday”!!

Title: Useless Test - Horribly Inaccurate Results
Review: This was the worst purchase I have made. The tests were done quickly and the communication was good. However, I wish I read more reviews from Reddit. The reviews are horrible. In the instance of my dog's results, one was over-aged by a year and the other by two years. Feedback on Reddit indicated that ages were overstated by up to 3 years. In one instance, someone KNEW their dog's birthday and the test overaged them by 3 years, if memory serves me. In my instance, my dogs were 1 yr +/- a few months, just based on their development path. Yet, the test appears to have overaged them.This is useless in my opinion. It's a waste of money in my opinion.It's so bad, I will be filing a complaint with the FTC.

Title: Is this trustworthy?
Review: If it is, i am happy to know my two adopted dogs’ ages. One is much younger than i was told. Other is exactly what i was told. Ez to do if your dog cooperates. I have also done their breed id and both are as told at adoption. Only one thing i wish i could know is if these breeds vary between countries. Mine were both imported from Europe which has different names and variations for same breeds, i think.

Title: Gimmick - do NOT purchase
Review: This test is a gimmick, do not waste your money. My results said that my dogs approximate date of birth was October 7, 2022. He was adopted by me on October 31, 2022 and was almost his adult size. This test was way off. I reached out to embark to ask for a retest or a refund and their customer service said they stand by their test and this approximation, claiming that the date of birth is within 12 months of their actual date of birth.Don’t bother. It’s an absolute waste of money. Embark is stealing from people with this test.

Title: So much fun!
Review: Our adoptee acted like a puppy, had grey hairs on his chin, and the shelter reported him to be around 3-5 years old. So, we sent off his saliva (he has an abundance of that, so didn't mind sharing some!) and found out that he is almost 8 years old!!!! So much energy for a little old man!

Title: Don’t waste your money!
Review: Our dog was estimated by a vet to be just now 2 years old. That makes sense because he’s gained 20 lbs. and grown 6 inches in the past 7 months. But… just got the DNA Age Test results and they claim he’s 3 1/2 years old. Not possible with all this puppy growth!
