*Named One of the 54 Best Colored Pencil Drawing Books of All Time by BookAuthority*
There has never been a better opportunity to master textures. Knowing how to make your surfaces and textures look real is one of the most challenging aspects of creating art in colored pencil, even for experienced artists. 101 Textures in Colored Pencil provides artists with step-by-step instructions for drawing a wide variety of the most common textures and surfaces, including sand, water, metals, foliage, wood, fabrics, stone, grass, hair, and many more.
To get you started, this comprehensive guide opens with a review of tools and materials as well as basic skills, such as strokes, effects, and color mixing. Each page of instruction is a comprehensive resource on how to create a specific texture, complete with two to three easy-to-follow steps and a final, detailed image of the finished artwork. Plus, the book is organized into sections based on subject matter, so you can easily find the specific texture you're looking for. An artist's gallery in the back of the book provides examples of the textures in completed works of art.

Learn a variety of strokes and effects
Strokes
Above are five different stroke techniques you'll use throughout the book: hatching, crosshatching, tapering, circular/scumbling, and blurring.
Blending
Each strip is identical layers of crimson lake and indanthrone blue, applied more heavily at the left and transitioning to a thin wash at the right. Note the increase in color saturation when either a colorless blender (line 2) or solvent (line 3) is used, but also note that they can’t work as well when the pigment is thin.
Impressed Lines
Impressing lines into your paper with a stylus before you begin drawing puts the indentations out of reach of pencil points. As you draw over them, they remain white. This is useful for depicting whiskers, single-hair highlights, distant twigs, and more.
Exercise: Aged Wood
Step 1
Begin with somewhat dull mineral orange and medium pressure to plan the areas of the knots and newer wood. Bring some streaks into the old wood area.
Step 2
Use somewhat dull French gray 30% and medium pressure to fill the areas of the old wood. Overlap into the mineral orange a little, and bring some streaks into the new wood area; they will be hard to see.
Step 3
With sharp French gray 70% and medium pressure, add long, uneven, jagged lines in the direction of the wood grain in the old wood area. Do the same with Tuscan red in the newer wood area, and start to indicate streaks and the inside perimeter of the knots.
Step 4
Use a colorless blender to somewhat smooth the newer wood. Then, with very sharp dark umber and heavy pressure, create large cracks and nail holes throughout. Keep the pencil very sharp and use medium pressure to make tapered strokes for the lesser cracks, including the cracks in the knots and grain lines throughout. Flow lines and cracks around the knots. With very sharp Tuscan red and heavy pressure, draw some grain lines in the newer wood. Finish by adding a few strokes of both Tuscan red and mineral orange with medium pressure in the old wood to suggest that it’s splintering off, and make a few little marks across the grain with dark umber.

Title: Fantastic resource!
Review: I have recently started using colored pencils not just for adult coloring books, but also in my mixed media work. This book has been a game changer! It is laid out very nicely with tools and tricks for artists in the front, and then by section for animal fur, skin, plants etc. Each texture detail spells out in 4 basic steps how to achieve realism, and the colored pictures and pencil color suggestions are great! And just like that- Bammm! Iâm a better artist!! For someone like me that cannot afford to take multiple art classes, this book is perfect. Itâs a great course bundled up in one easy to follow reference book. I have had it only a short time, but find myself using it a lot. One nice thing about this book is the refresher course on color theory, and how something like obtaining a deeper red color is not necessarily done by just layering on more red.I think this book is a very valuable tool for anyone that likes working with colored pencils and thanks to Denise for sharing her knowledge with the rest of us!

Title: Super helpful!
Review: I'm an adult coloring book junkie, always on the hunt for a way to improve my skill set...no pressure, just like seeing my pages get "better."This book is fabulous for creating depth, dimension and texture with your color pencils. And you don't have to use Prismas or Polys to get good results. I've been stepping outside my "P" box and using some other brands of less expensive pencils: Castle, Kalour, Black Widows, Goldfarber and my favorite, Arteza. And my results have been pretty darn good. Each technique is fully explained and illustrated (in color) and there is everything from fur to glass included. This book has helped me add interest (and more fun) to those coloring pages with large, kind of "empty" objects and blah backgrounds without having to use markers, which I have not mastered on coloring book paper...yet!Very happy with this purchase.

Title: Great Book
Review: What a great book for those wanting to learn to draw with colored pencils. The steps were pretty precise but I wouldâve liked to have seen a few more detailed steps for some of the more difficult techniques. Overall itâs a great book for the budding artist or even for the adult coloring book enthusiast. I learned a lot from it.

Title: It has good information but not enough
Review: This is a great little book, but it could have been better. The main reason I gave it five stars is because most of the books out there do not have a how to do page by subjects. The pictures are great but would have liked to see drawings ( step by step), especially on eyes and lips etc. on all ethic people besides white people. After all there are a lot of people out there in the world : Black, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, etc. What you use to color a white person in coloring wouldn't be the same on a black person. It was just what I was looking for in the other three books I bought. My only dilemma is that I wish it had more pages on the subject. The topics are on how to color: people, smooth skin, aged skin, straight, wavy, curly hair etc. Basically only one page per topic. And you know it takes more than one page perhaps that's why the book is small in size as well. There are many topics broken down by sections like animals and insects, fabric and textiles , glass, stone, ceramics, wood and metal, food and beverage, and nature.Sometimes a drawing is better than a picture when your trying to learn how to color; especially in a coloring book.

Title: This is truly one of the best books of coloring techniques that I own.
Review: I bought this book to use with my adult coloring books, and I am so glad I did. It briefly talks about supplies that are readily available and cheap, most of which I had never heard of in relation to coloring. I'm excited to try some. But my favorite part is this books simplicity. She teaches an effect on two to give steps, using Prismacolor Premier colored pencils, AND the sharpness of the pencil to be used. There are many techniques that depend on a dull pencil. She teaches in steps, with pictures. These are not crazy complicated, and the results are outstanding. The first one I tried was copper, and after practicing in my "practice coloring book", I began doing it successfully. I bout this book in the Kindle format, which is perfect for me, as I can easily go to th table of contents and find the effect that I am looking for. This is truly one of the best books of coloring techniques that I own.

Title: A perfect book for anyone wanting to hone their colored pencils skills.
Review: What a wonderful helpful book! The directions are concise with colorful pictures to use as guides. I have been using colored pencils for about a year. What Iâm realizing more and more as I search out new books to give me a greater understanding is that so much of it is not necessarily exactly how many steps are in the book (as mentioned in some reviews) but the amount of time I take to practice. I believe the author gives enough guidance to make most of the patterns quite doable. I also love that the book is small enough to transport easily. With just a few supplies I can easily work outside, on a plane, or while waiting for an appointment. This book is truly one of a kind for colored pencils and I look forward to ordering the other version of the book for graphite pencils.

Title: Very useful, very convenient for travel and reference!
Review: This book are a medium size, I compare the size of this book with the Colored Pencil Bible by Alyona Nickelson, and you can see the difference between both. It's convenient for travel, I really like it, because it goes to the point, and it gives you many examples to give textures with colored pencils! It has many practical tips and also shows a brief introduction to the materials, and other interesting things. I recomended at 100%!
