Here, in this lavishly illustrated history of the Best Dressed List, is the story of how the list originated and grew into the world-famous event it is today. And, for the first time ever, fashion doyenne and Best Dressed List founder Ms. Lambert contributes her personal story on the subject. Founded in 1940, the Best Dressed List was her brilliant publicity ploy to boost the drooping American fashion industry at the outset of World War II. It quickly became a highly visible and respected barometer of style, a "who's who" of the most glamorous women in the world. Interestingly, the first lists were mostly wealthy society women who were famous for spending entire fortunes every year on haute couture, while movie stars were rarely named to it, as they were dressed by their studios. Today, the list has evolved into a highly coveted placement that includes every sort of public figure, from socialites and models to movie stars and politicians. Featuring four to six of the top women from each decade, this spectacular volume explores the personal style of such fashion icons as Babe Paley in the 40s; Grace Kelly and Diana Vreeland in the 50s; Jackie O. and Verushka in the 60s; Twiggy and Bianca Jagger in the 70s; Princess Di and Tina Chow in the 80s; Sharon Stone and the Miller sisters in the 90s; Chloe Sevigny and Nicole Kidman in the 21st century. The Best Dressed List will be reproduced in its entirety in the back of the book.

Title: At long last, style
Review: If you long to see women dressed like women, not pole dancers or inveterate joggers, this book will be your oasis. The exquisite photographs, and the prose as elegant as the women it describes will remind you that all is not lost when it comes to elegance. In a world in which the expression "style icon" is applied to every starlet with a stylist, here in these beautiful pages is the real thing. Read it and restore your faith in the enduring power of true aesthetic standards. Read it and be inspired.

Title: sloppy presentation of nothing new
Review: This book repackages material that has been much better presented elsewhere. Entire books, beautifully done, are available on some of these women (Tina Chow, Carolina Herrera, Jacqueline Kennedy, The Duchess of Windsor, to name a few) and the book The Power of Style does a better job of profiling many of the others. As for the past decade or two, is there anything new left to say about Sharon Stone or Gwyneth Paltrow? The informative list sections are interesting, although egregiously badly edited. Diacritical marks are routinely left out of foreign names (Francois/e, Trigere, Ertegun, Patino e.g.) but not in "Chloë" (Sevigny). Inconsistencies are the norm. We have "Princess Ira Furstenberg of Italy" and her sister-in-law "Princess Diane von Furstenberg." On the same page (90) we have both "Princess Alexandra of Kent (Mrs. Angus Ogilvy" and "Mrs. Angus Ogilvy (Princess Alexandra of Kent)"! It would be helpful to know that 1975's "Countess Lulu de la Falaise" (1975) (listed without "Countess" in 1977) became, upon her marriage, 1981's "Mme. Thadee Klossowski (LouLou)." In fact a profile of her would be most welcome--she is an important figure about whom I have not read much. I could go on.Such things may seem trivial, but they suggest that this book is a splapdash production put together in defiance of editorial style and standards. Detail is important both in fashion and in print! The book will appeal to many, I'm sure, just not to me.

Title: Covers people already too well covered
Review: The women profiled in the book are well publicized icons of style. I really didn't need to know more about Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, The Duchess of Windsor, Sharon Stone, et al. It would have been nice to have more profiles, with more photos, of less well known people. I was glad that I hadn't paid much for the book, as I won't be keeping it on my shelves.
