Enjoy the bold flavors of Chinese food with 90 accessible plant-based recipes for the Western cook and kitchen. No wok required!

With her popular blog, Omnivore’s Cookbook, Maggie Zhu is the go-to person for traditional Chinese recipes designed for the Western home cook, and over the past few years, she has been incorporating more plant-based cooking into her diet. In Chinese Homestyle, Maggie shares a wide range of foolproof vegan recipes that pack all the flavor and none of the meat.

Building on a foundation of plant-based and vegetable-forward dishes found in Chinese cuisine, these umami-rich recipes are inspired by the comforting, everyday dishes Maggie grew up eating in northern China and discovered in her travels throughout the country, along with takeout favorites she became familiar with after moving to the United States.

Made with fresh ingredients and minimal oil and sugar, the salads, soups, stir-fries, braises, dumplings, and more are not only delicious, but also demonstrate the impact of aromatics, the benefits of using homemade sauces and condiments, how to cook tofu for maximum flavor and texture, and versatile cooking techniques, and include:

Homemade Sauces and Condiments Appetizers and Salads Orange Cauliflower Char Siu Bao Cumin Potato Baked Buns Egg-less Egg Drop Soup Shanghai Scallion Oil Noodles Tofu, Tempeh, and Seitan Hearty Seasonal Mains Easy Seasonal Sides Creamy Red Bean Ice Pops

Complete with step-by-step instructions, stunning photos, and information for stocking your Chinese pantry, Chinese Homestyle will soon have you enjoying this exciting cuisine right in your own home.

Sesame Noodles

My mom whips up sesame noodles on a hot summer night when she doesn’t feel like standing in front of a hot stove. With its nutty, savory sauce that has hints of sweetness and spiciness, this dish is always a crowd-pleaser.

Egg-Less Egg Drop Soup

This version of the classic soup is made with plant-based ingredients while preserving all the character of the original. It’s one of the dishes that I make most frequently at home because it’s so simple yet so satisfying.

Sichuan String Beans With Garlic Sauce

Blistered and charred green beans are tossed in an aromatic sauce, making this dish too good to pass up. And it’s substantial enough to serve as a main dish.

Soy Sauce Noodles

A quick and easy meal for one, this light and invigorating noodle soup is perfect for lunch or as a side dish at dinner. You can easily make it more substantial by topping it with some smoked or crispy tofu.

Title: Love this book!
Review: I've been following and cooking Maggie's recipes for a few years now. She's my go-to when I want to have really delicious Asian food. The recipes are easy to follow and always turn out really delicious. I live in the middle of nowhere so I've been online ordering ingredients for years now and I've always been able to find what I need for her recipes or a fine substitute. I highly recommend.

Title: I should read more carefully
Review: I have been making Maggie Zhu's recipes for a few years now. Found her on an episode of Lucky Chow. I bought this book because I thought it would be nice to have all her recipes in one book. Very surprised when it arrived and everything is plant based. Haha. You should know that these recipes and others on her website are not like your local take out place. Sodium content is probably close to 90% less than take out. Amount of sauce in the recipes are considerably less too. I would recommend making it like the recipe the first time and then alter the salt and sauce accordingly the next time.

Title: Recipes Look Great
Review: I have not tried any of the recipes yet, but they look really good. The only negative for me is that most of them contain a lot of oil/fat.

Title: A welcome addition!
Review: As someone who is a lifelong vegetarian and a enthusiastic home cook, I have always been wary of trying my hand at Chinese cooking. The number of specialized ingredients and the typical reliance on meat for flavor has always been a bit of a barrier. That is, until I discovered Maggie Zhu's blog Omnivore's Cookbook. I loved the personalized and clear style to her writing, simplifying techniques that once seemed elusive. I am beyond pleased that this cookbook mirrors that style. It is full of complex tasting but simple-to-make recipes, with beautiful photography and an excellent descriptive pantry list at the beginning. We hosted a dinner party last night featuring five dishes from the book with rave reviews from both omnivores and herbivores. Would highly recommend this book for home cooks, vegetarians, those interested in a plant based lifestyle, and Chinese food lovers alike. A valuable addition to your library (and stomach)!!

Review: Having used the Omnivore's online cookbook and found them to be amongst the best for authentic Chinese food, I thought I would try this book.I love that I can eat familiar dishes but in a vegan meal, using these recipes, and all are clearly written. The book includes a good section on tools, pantry staples etc and methods as well as a good variety of recipes.Ingredients are all available in the West and would appeal to many.Love this book

Title:
Review: A beautifully produced book with wonderful looking recipes well layed out, well illustrated and obviously expertly devised. But it's not the book I wanted. When I realised it was vegan, I thought, well, at least it'll be healthy. But the recipes are heavily reliant on tofu and there is a tonne of chilli used for flavouring. The recipes on Maggie Zhu's website are divine, exactly what I was looking for in Chinese cuisine. So this book comes as quite a shock. There is nothing I want to make. I loathe tofu and am allergic to chilli. I may have to return it. What a shame.
