Here are some of the easy, healthful recipes you'll discover:

Authentic Greek Salad

This salad is best in midsummer, when it can be made with perfectly ripe, in-season tomatoes that actually taste like, well, tomatoes. You can easily make a full meal out of it with the addition of some good bread and a little extra cheese. Or you can stuff it into the pocket of a pita bread and have it for lunch on the run.

A Perfect Hamburger

Perfection, hamburger-wise, is in the mouth of the beholder. Some people like to add a lot of stuff to their burger mixture; others like to put lots of stuff on top after cooking. Here’s a basic recipe that you can mess with until you’ve found your own personal burger nirvana.

Minestrone Soup

Old minestrone secret: If you grate your own Parmesan cheese, save the rinds and toss a couple of hunks into the soup as it cooks to add some serious flavor. Fish them out of the pot before serving.

Oven-Roasted Vegetables

Think of this more as a suggestion than an actual recipe. Go ahead and mess with it to use whatever vegetables you happen to have in the house. Substitute chunks of butternut squash for sweet potatoes, or invite some broccoli, cauliflower or carrots to the party. Just make sure you cut everything up into similar-size pieces so they cook evenly.

Whole Wheat Blueberry Yogurt Pancakes

Eat these pancakes and you’ll feel so healthy it’s scary. Loaded with good stuff — they’re a perfect way to start your day.

Maple Glazed Salmon

Seriously — what part of that doesn’t sound amazing? Marinate the fish while you make a salad or cook some potatoes.

Review: I've been cooking for over 50 years, so I'm not a newbie, but I am really enjoying this cookbook.

Title: More like Advanced Beginners 101.
Review: This is a decent enough book for people with some basic knowledge on cooking already but this particular edition (I have all three) has given in somewhat to the modern trend of cookbooks being more gourmet than everyday, with weird stuff you'd never fix if you came home from work tired and had to scrape together something quick and easy for supper. I've been cooking for a half century and wouldn't be interested in much of what is in this book as much of it is now into the "Braised Yak with Leeks and Cumquat Sauce" category with ingredients I don't usually have on hand or wouldn't know where to locate in the local supermarket, if they even have it on hand. If you really can't successfully boil water and need to follow short recipes with common ingredients, here's my suggestion - hunt up some old cookbooks from between 1930 and 1945. Between the Depression and WWII people couldn't splurge on weird foods, they kept it very basic and had to stretch every dollar. You can find such very basic cookbooks online, dirt cheap. They will be more help to you if you really ARE clueless in the kitchen. Don't get me wrong - if you are a newbie cook and you are out to impress your girlfriend with your culinary skills, this particular book will result in impressing her. But if you are next to broke and don't know squat about cooking, go with the vintage cookbooks as they will be more useful until you get your sea legs in the kitchen.

Title: Straightforward & Delicious!
Review: I actually bought this book even though I own the previous version, because it is a little cheaper and I need multiple copies for a teen cooking class. The addition of color photos is wonderful. The recipes are only slightly different than the previous edition. This cookbook is a bit unique because while it really is appropriate for true beginners, it doesn't use shortcuts like canned soup and packaged food (recipes include "Pancakes Not From a Box," "Macaroni and Cheese Not From a Box," and "Frosting Not From a Can"). These recipes use REAL food - lots of fresh veggies, homemade dressings & marinades, etc. The recipes are familiar, things that the reader will have eaten before or at least seen on menus. I haven''t seen any hard-to-find ingredients or expensive spices either. It's everything I want in a beginner cookbook - the only thing better would be if it had a spiral binding. 😉

Title: Ehhhh
Review: I bought this as a gift for a beginner in the kitchen. While I do advocate the use of fresh ingredients and dishes made from scratch, the recipes contained within are, in my opinion, a bit above the entry level tween chef wanna be.

Review: Bought this cookbook for my granddaughter's birthday present. It is the most up-to-date version of one that both her mother and I have. It is absolutely excellent for someone starting out on their own or even if they have never done much cooking before. Covers all the basics in a fun informative way. Has lots of delicious easy to make recipes. (I'm 79 and I still use some of these recipes!) Teaches to make things from scratch, which is more economical and often tastes even better than store-bought. Plus this newer version is chock full of great pictures. Definitely a 5 star!!!!

Review: Your book is good but not what I wanted. I need to learn how to defrost meat in the microwave? How to cook meat, fish, veg etc ? Your brilliant book explains complicated menus. I was hoping for a really basic cooking book. Please help 'cause I'm getting hungry? I'm 63 & never needed to cook before my wife ran off with a farmer! Warmest regards Jeff.
