When Italy surrendered in 1943, it sparked a diverse resistance movement of anti-German, anti-fascist partisans who rose up against German occupation. This book explores the tactics, organizational structure and equipment of the brave Italian resistance fighters, who knew exactly what was at stake when operating against their German occupiers. Beginning with low-level sabotage and assassinations, the groups grew until spring 1944 when they numbered around 100,000, and as the Allies advanced to the Gothic line, a remarkable, unified partisan command structure was created. The partisans began to work in close co-ordination with the Allies, receiving British SOE and American OSS liaison teams as well as supplies of weapons. The German response was eye-watering in its ferocity and brutality, as the SS and Italian RSI looked to eradicate the partisans once and for all when the Allied advance stalled in Autumn 1944. But when the Allies made their final breakthrough in the last weeks of the war the partisans rose in force to pile the pressure on the retreating Wehrmacht.

From an expert on Italian military history in World War II, this work provides an exhaustively researched, sumptuously illustrated guide to the men and women who fought a desperate struggle against occupation, as well as the German and Italian fascist security forces unleashed against them.

Title: Battle behind the lines...
Review: The surrender of the Italian government in 1943 led to the immediate occupation of most of Italy by its erstwhile German allies. Many Italian soldiers fled to the hills rather than submit to German rule, creating the basis for large scale partisan warfare over the last two years of the war. "World War II Partisan Warfare in Italy" is an Osprey Elite Series book with a surprising amount of information about that fight. The book is authored by Pier Battistelli and Piero Crociani, two academics with background in the conflict; illustrations are by Peter Dennis. Although most Elite titles tend to focus on the uniforms and equipment of individual fighters, this book summarizes the fighting in its various phases, including the German struggle to recruit and maintain anti-partisan forces out of the Italian military, police, and fascist organizations. Allied support to the partisan movement is mentioned, but not in great detail. The scale of the fighting as described here is quite surprising, and there are many lessons learned for a more modern world in which irregular warfare is still a prominent feature. The text is nicely supported by a collection of period photographs, maps, diagrams, and modern illustrations. Highly recommended for its insightful introduction to a largely overlooked phase of the Second World War.

Title: Great coverage of a little-known aspect of WWII
Review: This book packs a tremendous amount of information in a short amount of space; The amount of information is at once a blessing and a bane; a blessing because it does in fact present as much as it does, but a bane because it reads almost like a telephone book. At times it seemed that there were more numbers or figures on a page than there were actual words. I could find no fault substantively (although I am not really well-versed in the subject), but did find that I had to read it in rather short segments to avoid a headache. The maps keyed to the text are a nice feature.

Title: WW2 Partisan Warfare in Italy is one of the best book I have read on this campaign
Review: WW2 Partisan Warfare in Italy is one of the best book I have read on this campaign. Book tells the reader the about the campaign the origins. The fighting formation on both sides is described in great detail. The interesting portion for me in the book is the Italian forces that fought for the Germans after the rest of the army surrendered to the allies in 1943. Book has many pictures and color plates on the uniforms that were used and the many different types of weapons also. Great read and enjoyable
