“A darkly funny novel about betrayal, loneliness and the surprising pleasure of being single again” from the author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Good Housekeeping).

At sixty-nine years old, Pru has found herself alone for the first time in her life. Her grown children are out of the house, and her husband, Greg, has filed for divorce. She attributes Greg’s betrayal to a cancer scare and a more-than-midlife crisis, but that doesn’t make her feel any better—or less lonely. It seems that nothing—not even her eccentric, free-spirited best friend, Azra—can pull her out of her depression. Until Pru sees a black dress in a thrift store window . . .

Its sleek silhouette calls to mind long-gone days of cocktail parties and sophisticated conversation. And it gives Pru a brilliant idea: where better to wear a black dress—and find age-appropriate single men—than at a funeral? As Pru combs through the obituaries and attends masses and wakes, she finds comfort among the bereaved. After all, they’re all grieving someone they have lost. But Pru’s about to discover that though her new dating plan may get her out of the house and back on the market, the life she’s so desperately trying to leave behind isn’t done with her yet . . .

“With dry wit and observation, Moggach tackles the perils of ageing with brutal honesty.” —Daily Express

“This page-turner is like the best wakes, it will make you feel hungry and alive.” —The Times (London)

“As ever with Moggach, the joy is in her witty observations of middle-class life and bracingly tart portrayal of family relationships.” —Daily Mail

Title: really didn’t see it coming
Review: This story had me on edge half the time and angry the other half. What a cast of odd characters, so flawed as humans are want to be. A number of outrageous twists, a captivating book.

Title: Yes, the protagonist is not introspective in the least and might be crazy.
Review: Reading thru the reviews of The Black Dress which I read in hours, and laughed quite a bit! Crazy plot. No redeeming qualities in any of our characters, so if you need a “happy” ending, don’t read. This is the second book I’ve read recently in which the first person protagonist is not telling us what really happened until later in the book. How well do we know each other? Are we the person we present to the world, or are we someone else entirely? Is everyone always out for themselves, at the end of the day, and constantly concealing their true motivations? Is everyone a secret sociopath? If you want to invest, emotionally, in the characters in a novel, this book might not be for you, but if you enjoy thinking about these questions and examining human behaviour, this book might be enjoyable. It reminds me a bit of Iris Murdoch with its twisting plot structure, with shocking revelations that turn the narrative on its head.

Title: A very strange and often unbelievable book
Review: I generally enjoy books by this author, but couldn’t wait to get to the end of this book. There were no redeeming features for the character. She made a habit of making bad decisions. I generally buy books and then pass them on to friends to read. I could honestly not recommend this book to any of my friends. It’s that strange and the plot was unbelievable. I hope when I get to that age that I would spend my time chasing the real and valuable things in life.

Review: I really enjoyed this book. The lead character is a woman well into middle age, which I found refreshing. I also enjoyed the fact that the narrative proceeded in a linear way, rather than jumping between different timelines, and the writer’s style is simple and straightforward. As I was reading the book, I was planning to give it a 4 star rating, but an interesting twist towards the end elevated it to 5 stars.

Review: I purchased this book because of the previous one I had read by this author (Marigold Hotel). I was extremely disappointed with the book. The plot has great possibilities and is a great idea....buy a little black dress and attend funerals. There the main character can mourn the breakdown of her long marriage and meet other mourners on a similar journey. The main character had no moral compass to guide her, her children lived out of reach and her husband ran away with her best friend. The main character was a up filled sexual maniac. The story took us from sex with grieving widows to a full blown lesbian affair with her best girlfriend.......Would not recommend this at all

Review: A controversial protagonist, if ever I read. So much of Moggach’s writing is relatable and this book is no exception. Amusing details on Pru’s family home environs, the thought processes of her time of life, a glimpse of the present day laid on top of this. The twist, when it came, took me by surprise as she’d largely been a sympathetic character even considering the ‘two sides to every story’ is playing in our heads. Perhaps a little contrived, the plot in places stretches belief, but nonetheless an entertaining read which ends arguably with another beginning!

Review: As many other commentators have said, I was tempted by this book having enjoyed the author's previous ones. However, while it starts well - humorous, realistic, and human, it descends into fantasy and farce. While well written, I was disappointed at the story line and the denouement.
