Title: Shocked!
Review: I'm doing this because I'm shocked. I am one of those ancient people who struggles with, no, I hate the Comcast remote, I'm phone challenged and everything is a struggle. Did I mention I'm old? So this external DVD Drive arrives and my expectations are zero, but I have a DVD I can't replace or find at my local library so I'm desperate. I had a Pioneer external DVD Drive for several years and it worked 80% of the time, but it could not rip this one file on this DVD that I want. I got frustrated and tore the top off it. I felt much better, but I still did not have the file I wanted. The DVD drive in my desktop wouldn't work either. So I opened the Asus and right off I see I have to buy an adaptor so the usb-c will fit in my usb 2 laptop. Not happy. It arrives 2 days later and now comes the test. It ripped it as though nothing was wrong with the DVD !!! All I did was plug it in and run MKV, no downloads and I did not even look at the instructions, CD or DVD that came with it. Am I pleased? Happy?? You bet and it was 30% of the price of my old Pioneer..

Title: Works Fine. Needs Firmware Update for Mac M1 or later
Review: Works as intended. If you're using this on a MacBook like me, with an M1 chip or later, you need to have access to a Windows PC to update the firmware of the optical drive, otherwise it won't be detected by your laptop. The firmware is available on the ASUS website, just google ASUS V1M firmware update.The application that updates the firmware is a .exe file, that's why you need access to a Windows PC.Knocking off one star because this isn't explicitly stated, and is inconvenient to the non-tech inclined, as might be a large swath of the customers buying an optical drive in 2024.

Title: Compact. Win 11 Compatible. Sturdy and Non-Slip.
Review: Bought a new laptop (LG Gram 17 inch 2022 32RAM 2TB) and I wanted to buy an external disc reader/writer for my library of well-preserved physical Rosetta Stone collections I've bought over the years. This worked perfectly for my needs. It works with Windows 11, is nice and compact, and stays in place very well.It doesn't move at all when switching out discs during installs.Easy to re-package and store safely in its original box until needed.I don't use it for anything other than what I explained above. However, if I did need it for any other purpose I'm confident it will complete the task. Price not too bad. Nice looking design, I like that the cord can store away, because as I said, I don't have it out except when I need to use it for a specific purpose.Very satisfied. Another quality ASUS product.

Title: They had me at built in cable.
Review: Great drive with a built in cable. What more can I say you don't have to worry about losing the cable that the drive comes with and it tucks inside the back for easy travel. You only need to worry about one connector and not two from coming unplugged. I ended up buying two of these dvd drives because I was so happy with the first one.

Title: All I Wanted and Expected out if a DVD Drive
Review: I was very pleasantly surprised with the internal cable compartment. However, the length of the cord was a bit disappointing. It was barely 6 inches long. Either a laptop on the go, that cord eould hscmve a real delight were it a bit longer.In every other aspect, the drive delivered well and was at least as much appreciated as could be.

Title: Does not work with MacBook Air M2
Review: This device is not compatible with MacBook Air M2. After the drive is plugged into the MacBook, the drive will light up and start spinning, but the computer will not recognize the drive contents. There are multiple posts online about users encountering incompatibility between this Asus product and MacBook Air M2. There is no meaningful customer support information online regarding this issue. So the drive is useless to me.

Review: Very good external DVD/CD drive. Very compact, very light (all plastic) and a kinda neat ‘pocket’ to stash the usb-c cord. Few things I’ve noticed after using it for a few days…1) it is so light you need to hold it down firmly when closing the tray2) I find it better to use 2 fingers/thumbs to close the tray3) sometimes gets a bit loud as the media spinsStill, I really like it and it works very well.
