"We should all be cooking like Adeena Sussman."
--The Wall Street Journal

"Sababa is a breath of fresh, sunny air."
--The New York Times

In an Israeli cookbook as personal as it is global, Adeena Sussman celebrates the tableau of flavors the region has to offer, in all its staggering and delicious variety

In Hebrew (derived from the original Arabic), sababa means "everything is awesome," and it's this sunny spirit with which the American food writer and expat Adeena Sussman cooks and dreams up meals in her Tel Aviv kitchen. Every morning, Sussman makes her way through the bustling stalls of Shuk Hacarmel, her local market, which sells irresistibly fresh ingredients and tempting snacks--juicy ripe figs and cherries, locally made halvah, addictive street food, and delectable cheeses and olives. In Sababa, Sussman presents 125 recipes for dishes inspired by this culinary wonderland and by the wide-varying influences surrounding her in Israel.

Americans have begun to instinctively crave the spicy, bright flavors of Israeli cuisine, and in this timely cookbook, Sussman shows readers how to use border-crossing kitchen staples-- tahini, sumac, silan (date syrup), harissa, za'atar---to delicious effect, while also introducing more exotic spices and ingredients. From Freekeh and Roasted Grape Salad and Crudo with Cherries and Squeezed Tomatoes, to Schug Marinated Lamb Chops and Tahini Caramel Tart, Sussman's recipes make a riot of fresh tastes accessible and effortless for the home cook. Filled with transporting storytelling, Sababa is the ultimate, everyday guide to the Israeli kitchen.

Title: This cookbook is a work of genius and a staple in my kitchen.
Review: At this point I've had the cookbook for several months and love several things about it. I love the explanation of ingredients early on in the book. It got me excited to explore and collect new spices for my kitchen. The layout reminds me of Gjelina by Travis Lett where it starts with condiments and spice mixes. I appreciate Adeena's amba shortcut and I love that some of these recipes for condiments can come alive in purpose outside this book. Some of the recipes are such hits that every time I make them my husband is amazed- like the honey harissa chicken. It's so easy, stupid easy, and it wows every time. The recipes are well laid out, easy to follow, and very thorough. I've followed the instructions and always gotten great results. I think the only recipe I've struggled with is the pita and probably just because bread/baking can be tricky. I plan to watch some youtube videos and revisit. Overall, I cannot live without this book. There's an honesty and closeness that Adeena writes with. She gives short background for each recipe that is actually helpful and gives some context but it's short and leaves you craving more info...which is good! She's brilliant, the book is brilliant, and again can't stress enough that I can't live without it.

Title: Awesome quick hummus recipe.
Review: I’ve cooked about a third of the recipes In this book and their are some keepers. But also some that I did not enjoy at all. The salt seems to be off in a few recipes but it’s easy to adjust to your liking. The hummus, cardamom Zhug, challah, and a couple meat dishes made the book well worth it for me!

Title: This Cookbook is my Therapy
Review: This cookbook has revolutionized the way my family eats. When I first opened it and perused it, I thought there were some nice ideas but honestly thought, ‘why is there such a big condiment/spice blend section to this book?’ I’m a working mom with little time to make mini recipes for only one dinner. Or so I thought.I started out slow, and the first recipe I made from the book was the Pt’itim with cinnamony Smokey eggplant. I was blown away. The flavor combinations and the clarity of instruction were amazing. It was a sophisticated dish that my entire family loved and I could put together on a weeknight. I turned the page and decided that the lentils with crispy leeks was the next task—and it requires making baharat spice mix. ‘Fine,’ I thought. I can make a dry spice mix. Another amazing dish with unique and sophisticated flavors and easy to follow directions. Ok, Adeena, I’m paying attention...Over the past few months I’ve tried a number of recipes and really only had one fail, which I am sure was my own fault. I have been willing to try recipes that I was skeptical about because of how well the other recipes I’ve tried have turned out. I have learned new techniques and, following the detailed and careful instructions written so well, have impressed my friends, family, and most importantly, myself. This cookbook has made my shopping list explode with bunches of produce, the majority of which is available at my local grocery or farmers market when I have time to go. So many vegetables have joined our family diet and helped us all lose weight naturally. Over time I have challenged myself to make condiments and pickle vegetables and found out how satisfying it is! I never thought I would be the person who owns canning jars and pickling weights, yet here I am! I honestly find it therapeutic to make harissa, amba, schug and confit! My family is Israeli so a lot of these flavors were already very familiar to me. Being able to recreate them at home for my husband and son has been such a blessing. I can honestly say that there is many a night I prefer to stay home and experiment with this book rather than go to a restaurant. Please please please make a sequel, Adeena. There are more things we need to learn!
