Fast, cheap, and easy to make, it’s no wonder the dish is so universally embraced in cuisines and traditions all over the world. As this book proves, there’s really no limit to what you can do with fried rice.

Thai Fried Coconut Rice with Pork Satay and Spinach

Peanuty satay sauce spiked with coconut, lime, and chilies is so good. But it takes a pantry full of ingredients to make great satay. To streamline the dish without cutting anything out, this has a flavor-packed marinade that does double-duty as the base of the sauce.

Fried Rice with Halloumi, Pickled Onions, and Zhug

The salty, springy, semisoft cheese is magically grillable, with the outside getting crispy-toasty and the inside deliciously melted. Traditionally made with goat and sheep milk, it’s quite rich, so I pair it with Israeli zhug, a spicy herbal pesto of sorts, and tangy pickled onions. The pickled onions add bright flavor, color, and crunch.

Hawaiian Spam and Pineapple Fried Rice

Spam musubi, that genius Hawaiian creation of barely sweet sushi rice topped with a slab of salty Spam and wrapped in a belt of briny seaweed, should be in the snacking Hall of Fame. This fried rice aims to re-create that simple pleasure, with a drizzle of homemade teriyaki sauce and little fresh pineapple thrown in for bright pops of sweetness.

Puffed-Rice PB & J Bars

Homemade puffed rice is so much more ricey flavored than crisped rice cereal, and these fast and easy peanut-buttery treats are a great way to show it off. To add fruity-jammy notes while preserving the crunch factor, fold in crispy freeze-dried berries.

Huevos Rancheros Fried Rice

The rib-sticking breakfast of huevos rancheros was invented to use up leftover tortillas, so it’s not such a stretch to apply the same logic to leftover rice. This version includes seared corn kernels and sautéed kale, so it’s hearty enough to serve for dinner. The best part of huevos rancheros is the rich, spicy ranchero sauce.

Leek and Wild Mushroom Fried Rice

The quintessentially northern European combination of leeks and mushrooms is delicious any time of the year. And to deepen the dish’s savory umami notes, add a dash of Bragg’s amino acids and a sprinkle of real truffle salt. You’ll and yourself sprinkling it on everything, even popcorn.

Mujadara Fried Rice

Just lentils, rice, and caramelized onions, mujadara is so simple, cheap, and comforting, it’s no wonder it’s commonly found from home kitchens to street vendors all over the Middle East. Built on pantry staples, it’s one of those go-to one-pot dishes you can always turn to when the fridge is bare but it’s also accommodating to whatever leftover proteins and vegetables you might want to tuck in. Traditionally, the rice and lentils for mujadara are cooked together into a kind of pilaf, but this recipe gives it a fried rice twist.

Vagharelo Bhaat (Gujarati Fried Rice) with Chicken and Cilantro Yogurt

Every region of India has its own version of fried rice, which is often called “tempered” rice because it’s flavored with spices cooked in oil. This version takes its inspiration from the Gujarat region, where mustard seeds, chili powder, and garam masala are typically used. Crunchy peanuts add more protein, and a lashing of cilantro yogurt gives it a bright, creamy richness that tempers the heat from the chili powder.

Grilled Greek Spanakorizo with Souvlaki Chicken

You don’t have to fry rice on the stove. When it’s hot out, take the skillet outside and cook it on the grill. This recipe turns spanakorizo, a traditional Greek dish of lemon-spinach rice, into fried rice, and pairs it with garlicky grilled skewers of souvlaki.

Title: Well thought out recipes
Review: We have now made 3 recipes from this book and I think we’ll be working our way through the rest! We have made Indonesian rice, fried rice with spam, and Vietnamese flavored rice, all have been delicious! I thought I knew how to make fried rice, but this book taught me new techniques and flavors that really elevated fried rice. Next time I’ll try to grab a photo before my boys gobble it up!

Title: A silly book not worth buying.
Review: This is the worst example of a cookbook. The recipes are really stupid and not worth the attempt to eat the result. I mean "Huevos Rancheros Fried Rice" How silly can it get. Do not buy this awful book. Thankfully I got it from my local library so I haven't spent any money. Thank heaven!!!

Review: I have only tried a few recipes. They work very well. The thing i hate is there are no metric measures. This is just pathetic in a world that is basically metric. Why is it so hard to include both measurements?
