For nearly six decades Barbra Streisand has been one of the singular figures in American entertainment. From the cabaret to the Broadway stage, from television and film stardom to her acclaimed work as a director, from the recording studio to the concert hall, she has demonstrated that the extraordinary voice that launched her career was only one of her remarkable gifts.
Now, in her first book, Barbra Streisand reveals another aspect of her talent: the taste and style that have inspired her beautiful homes and collections. My Passion for Design is her account of the creation and consturction of her newest home—the dream refuge she has longed for since the days when she shared a small Brooklyn apartment with her mother, brother, and grandparents, and a culmination and reflection of her love of American architecture and design from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Whether she is seeking an elusive shade of blue for the paneling in a Federal lounge, tracking down a contemporary woodworker who was able to recreate the exquisite Greene & Greene style, or choosing the roses to harmonize with both the interior and exterior of a given room, Barbra's perseverance and attention to detail are remarkable—and remarkably engaging. She is a wonderfully witty storyteller as well as a knowledgeable and charming guide.
My Passion for Design contains not only Barbra's own photographs of the rooms she has decorated, the furniture and art she has collected, and the ravishing gardens she has planted on her land on the California coast, but memories of her childhood, and insights into the development of her own sense of style. The millions of fans who have cherished her voice as a singer will find that she has an equally inimitable and compelling voice as a writer.
Here is a rare and intimate private tour of the world of one of our most beloved stars, which will be welcomed by her fans and all lovers of the great achievements of American design.

Title: ENCHANTING!
Review: WOW! I bought this book and after a quick perusal, I decided to separate a special day to start reading it, since I did not want to be in a hurry. It is marvelous... Gorgeous photos, a lot of specific, scientific!! details. A wonderful comprehensive book for those who are planning to engage in a job like this, very difficult, with a lot of obstacles, but an exciting one. I was immediately identified with Ms. Streisand since I love interior design and I am always searching for new details, furniture, accesories and antique stuff for my home. I wish I have her money to do like her... have various houses decorated in various styles that I love; shabby, victorian, arts & crafts, art nouveau, 18th century french... No, not so many boring details, Ms. Streisand, I love that she included such detailed information, this is not only a beautiful decorating book, it is a very interesting textbook. She is obsessive/compulsive with perfect interior design, just like me!! And she thinks that, as my father says, if you think it, you can make it a reality! I wish that she will be able to go ahead with the Volume II and include her principal home! It is a lovely conversation piece!!! Recommended!

Title: Wow
Review: First - the book itself. Black grosgrain-covered box that unfolds to the red grosgain-covered volume. Her autograph, and handwritten 262/500, showing the authenticity are a couple of pages in. One of the most beautiful presentations I've ever seen. When you lift out the book, the DVD is snapped into the back cover of the box. As for the content, it is truly one of the most lavish, colorful and entertaining books about design that I have ever read. The photographs are gorgeous. There are two double-gatefolds showing the back and front of the barn that is one of three main topics covered. The two page spread on the close-ups of the various roses that seem to spring willy-nilly about are breathtaking, one page devoted to the "Barbra Streisand Rose". Her collections over the years could fill a couple of museums; here much of that wonderful collecting is documented and commented upon. The photos alone of the design for the book are spectacular, as are the written notes, and the design mistakes which are shown before and after. She knew what she wanted and she created it. As the whole of her career proves, striving for perfection can be fulfilling to those of us fortunate enough to experience her journey.

Title: BARBRA'S MAGICAL WORLD.....
Review: The "SO- CALLED" book review by PJ Samith (one star) sounds more like a personal attack on Streisand more than a book review. How can you review the book if you didn't buy it or read it? Sad really. Since I have bought the book, and read almost half of it today, I think I'll rebut your review and give the book 5 stars. My only complaint is that acouple pictures have a pixellated look to them. Other than that, Streisand's attention to detail is amazing, and her taste impeccable. Getting a glimpse inside the worlds greatest star's world is worth the price alone. Barbra's writing feels like she is speaking right to the reader, telling you her personal stories and filling you in on all that it took to create this magical place. BRAVO Barbra!SIDE NOTE: MR. SAMITH....WITH ALL RESPECT, I was there in the stadium at Madison Square Garden the night of the "outburst". People payed good money to hear Streisand, Not it listen to some blow hard Republican shouting stuff from the stands. Miss. Streisand did the right thing telling him to "SHUT THE ____ UP!" She also said she would give him his money back if he wasn't happy. The thunderous applause that night showed that 98% of the audience think she did the right thing. So please don't blame that event for your review. Thank you!

Title: Amazing Journey - Worth the read, yes, I said read!
Review: Think J. Paul Getty, Randolph Hearst, Walt Disney. I read every word of this book and studied the pictures directed by text and captions. It was a journey of many years - an art project - that culminated in a thoughtful place of comfort and reflection big enough to house an enormous collection of exquisite mementos of a life well-earned and well-lived. I am not an Early American decor fan, but I understood Mrs. Brolin's attraction: her interest was in the history of our country, along with the artisans who had something to contribute through their craft, revealing what brought us to the present. The research was all part of the journey and part of the attraction of putting together the puzzle. She learned a great deal and that makes the ride worth the effort. She spent all of my lifetime and more honing her craft and bringing her talent into the lives of many. I loved the perfection of the scenes in her movies;the laughter, the tears and, yes, the beauty, all the more poignant. I have never seen or heard her in concert, but I listen to her while on my treadmill and it's better than the nosebleed section in a concert hall by far. She is in my head. Her music has spoken to me since losing my father (Poppa Can you Hear Me?), her love song to James Brolin (while my husband and I go through growing pains). Even when I didn't like the furnishings, I felt connected and I could see myself sitting on that blue couch with her enjoying the view and the roses, and the reasons why everything had a perfect place, with thoughtful placement. While I think to myself, "Gee, how many mouths could that one antique feed?", I also believe that Mrs. Brolin's views are wide enough to help others as she sees fit;I trust that. It is apparent that she can afford to build and house her legacy as she sees fit and I would trust that she does many philanthropic things we never hear about. It is no one's business to count her money for her or dictate how she spends it. Many people spend millions on therapy in an office on a couch. Some life journeys involve buying things on credit that one doesn't need, with money one does not have, to impress people one does not know, simply making Wall Street rich. Others, if they are fortunate, can find and reveal themselves and their personal growth in projects, at whatever scale. I enjoyed the book immensely and I went through it many times to understand the message, even after my dogs pulled it off the table and ate the last 10 pages. I learned that Perfection is a great aspiration when it doesn't get in your way or keep you from taking the first step, and it is okay to strive for it. Congratulations! Brava! And my great thanks for taking me along for the ride, inspiring me to stay on course and pursue my "projects".

Review: This is such a fun book to read! I love all the pictures and the stories of how Barbra designed and decorated her home. I have read this book cover to cover a few times over the years and I enjoy flipping through it to look at all the lovely pictures. I lost my original copy when I moved a couple years ago, so I finally ordered another one (on sale!). I donât know why I love this book so much. Kind of neat to see how a superstar lives, I guess! The book is also written in a way that feels like Barbra is talking directly to the reader, which I like. Itâs pricey, but I do recommend it to any Barbra Streisand fans.

Review: An absolute labour of love. There are laugh out loud moments due to Barbra's eccentricities, but it's incredibly endearing. Some of the decor is not to my taste but it's impressive how cohesive everything is and her attention to detail. Got some really good ideas for when I do my own home.
