How do I set up the MT8733 Phone connection?

The MT8733 includes two telephone ports that support standard (landline) telephones and other devices. The MT8733 is designed to work with Comcast Xfinity voice service only.

To use the telephone ports, first, make sure you have subscribed to Xfinity voice service. This service may be provisioned to support either one phone line on TEL1 or two phone lines on both TEL1 and TEL2, with two different phone numbers.

You can connect almost any standard telephone equipment to an MT8733 telephone port. This includes almost anything that connects using an RJ11 phone plug telephones, cordless phone base stations, answering machines, etc. (If you want to connect a security system, check with the security system manufacturer for compatibility).

You can connect individual devices, or you can connect multiple devices that plug into the same phone line. (Their Ringer Equivalence Numbers need to add up to 5 or less.) One way to connect multiple devices is to plug the MT8733 phone port into a jack connected to existing telephone wiring. Before doing this, make sure to disconnect the wiring totally from the telephone company’s network demarc. This is normally done by unplugging a phone cord at the jack nearest to where the phone line comes into your home. After you unplug that phone cord, check that none of the phones on that line gets a dial tone when you go off-hook. If they don’t get a dial tone, it’s safe to connect a phone cord from one of the line’s jacks to an MT8733 phone jack. After you do that and power up the MT8733, all the phones on that line should get a dial tone. You may want to attach a cordless phone base station to the MT8733, and then place cordless handsets wherever you like. The Battery Purchase or Replacement section describes how you can make sure you have phone service even if your MT8733 loses power.

Title: Easy as Pie
Review: Like most here I got tired of paying the $13 a month rental for the Comcast gateway. The Arris gateway provided by Comcast also created a problem for me whenever we experienced a power outage. I sometimes took up to 3 hours for the Arris to sort itself out and allow me an internet connection even though it would let me connect to the gateway.Connecting the Motorola couldn't be easier (especially if you use the Ethernet cable connection between the computer and gateway). To connect via WiFi, I only had to log onto the gateway using the default user name and password printed on the tag on the bottom of the gateway. As soon as the computer log onto the gateway an immediate window popped on the computer screen welcoming me to Xfinity and with the click of one button the gateway registered itself with the provider. A message came on the screen and notified me that it may take up to 30 minutes before I had network access but I was connected and ready to surf the internet immediately. If you connect with the Ethernet cable you don't even have to select a user name or enter a password. As soon as the gateway powers up and runs through about 2 minutes of light blinking it will automatically bring up the Xfinity registration page. I don't understand the comments from some users that said it was necessary to call Comcast to register both the WiFi and Voice capabilities and have their techs push magic buttons to get the gateway up and running. This thing really is connect, plug, hit the power button on the rear of the gateway, wait for the lights to indicate it is ready, then log in with your computer and select the register mode on the computer screen.The user interface is much better than the Arris gateway with much more flexibility on configurations. In addition the built-in firewall the gateway also has an onboard VPN. The Motorola has a much better array of security options than the Comcast rental. After changing the admin login as well as the user name and password for both channels I ran a WiFi analyzer to check for signal level, speed, and overall performance on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz channels and everything was perfect. My download speed on 5 GHz is about 20% faster than with the Arris. Usinng slightly different names for each channel will allow you to divide you network load so you are not taxing the channel you have connected to your computer. I kept my computer on the 5 Ghz channel and split off my Nest system, smart TV, DirecTV, and tablet to the 2.4 GHz channel.The only thing I liked better with the Arris gateway compared to the Motorola is the power supply is internal to the Arris so you only have a power cord leading from the socket to the unit. On the Motorola, a power brick plugs into the wall and a low voltage wire travels from the brick to the gateway. This just creates a little more clutter and one more thing sitting on the shelf. The Motorola is slightly smaller and obviously lighter since the power supply is external.I did experience one problem that had nothing to do with the gateway and mention it here because other users may also have a WD MyCloud Home NAS drive that you will be attaching to the gateway. Once I had my gateway up and running smoothly I connected the Ethnernet cable between the MyCloud Home and the gateway. As soon as I did I lost internet connection even though both the 2.4 and 5 GHz channels showed they were still available. I called Motorola customer support to see if they had any tips. The support rep said they had never heard of any problem like this and even quizzed the other reps. One rep said he was running the same gateway with the same MyCloud Home on his network and had not problems. It took a while to determine that the MyCloud was the problem and a Google search indicated that the Plex app that was enabled on the MyCloud was causing the problem. I disconnected the MyCloud, cycled the power on the gateway and it returned to normal operation. I did a reset on the MyCloud and did not enable Plex when I had it reconnected and everything worked fine. After making sure everything was working correctly I eventually enabled Plex and everything remained normal. Powering everything off and back on did not cause any adverse reaction so everything is good.

Title: Better than never-ending rental fees.
Review: This modem has proven to be a more-than-satifactory for the rented modem provided by Comcast. It seems to be faster (speed of this modem and of the rented modem are not known. this one works very well.). And, it provides a 2.4 and 5G clean and strong wireless signal throughout our house.The installation was straight-forward. The cable connections are self-apparent and easily done.Connection to the internet was done following the provided, and easily-understood, instructions. A window appeared reading: "Congratulations, you have successfully completed the installation and will be online in fewer than 10 minutes", or something to that effect. Digital Nirvana had been almost obtained when a window appeared informing the user that "We have encountered a problem"We??!! I had no elf in my pocket!! A call to Comcast was necessary and the installation was completed...with a bit of difficulty.Fear not, it was discovered a few days later that THE CABLE GUY had placed an improper filter in the service line and that filter was attenuating the signal. This filter had installed without my knowledge and had evidently been in place for some time. It was discovered and removed by a BRIGHTER CABLE GUY!Apparently the problem that "We had encountered" was a result of that filter. The installation probably would have been without difficulty absent the offending filter.I can not comment on durability at this point. The modem has been in use a week and is a perfect replacement for the rental modem.You can do this!

Review: Summary:I eagerly replaced our overpriced Xfinity modem with the Motorola MT8733 VOIP-enabled modem hoping to save $180 a year in rental fees. What a horrendous mistake! This has been the least reliable modem/router I have ever purchased. I am going to just eat the $400 and buy an alternative modem like the Arris T25 or Netgear CM2050V. NEVER buying a Motorola again.Details:Installation was straightforward but the Motosync mobile app was hard to find (made by "Minim" not "Motorola"). Once I found it, I was unable to get the Motosync app to work because the signup page kept failing. Lame. Okay whatever...it's not necessary.After the device came online, the handshake with Comcast kept failing. I unplugged the modem several times to get it connected. The admin console for this device is about the worst I've ever used. The page routinely fails to load requiring a reboot.Now the worst part. From day one, the modem has dropped connectivity on a nearly daily basis. It doesn't recover without a hard reboot. For a several weeks, I tried factory resetting it, analyzed the wifi spectrum for interference, adjusted wiring, replaced cables, replaced splitters, had Comcast come out and analyze line signal noise issues. The modem kept dropping wifi. So I finally reached out to Motorola support. Even after providing them with event logs and connection values, they kept pointing at Comcast. After a few weeks of back and forth, they finally agreed to replace the device. It took two months to receive a replacement. Guess what, the replacement exhibited the same issues!I gave up and asked Amazon for a refund. To my surprise, Amazon very generously offered me a refund minus the restocking fee. I replaced it with the Netgear CM2050V VOIP modem with a TP-Link AX3000 router. there have been ZERO issues. Setup was a breeze and both modem and router maintain stable, speedy connections. Speeds have shot up from Summary:Based on my experience, I would not buy the MT8733 product because it's poorly manufactured and just isn’t stable. The software sucks. Avoid Motorola!
