Title: Inside Story of the IHS Band
Review: The fine history of the Ithaca High School Band under Frank Battisti that Brian Norcross composed decades ago (One Band that Took a Chance) now has a worthy companion in this insider's take on the phenomenon. In The Best We Can Be, Frank Battisti himself and one of his acolytes have assembled not only the chronology of the Battisti era at Ithaca High School but also numerous supporting documents--programs, photos, articles, letters, reminiscences--to bring the experience to life. The numerous attainments of the band, the deep commitment to creativity, and the unique philosophy of the director all emerge clearly and sequentially in this book, which could serve as a guide for any teacher seeking to break ground in deeply personal and engaging learning enterprises. The text is equally readable at a single sitting or in desultory small doses. It provides an intriguing portrait of a remarkable program that transcended its era of the fifties and sixties, and whose influence spread far beyond the cozy confines of upstate New York.

Title: It is the not just the history of a man ...
Review: It is the not just the history of a man and his band; it is the generation of some early Baby Boomers and their opportunity to shine while they play music and march.

Title: Ithaca High School Band
Review: The book is a history of the band that I once was a member. It brought back so many memories. The most important is how much of an effect Mr. Battisti had on developing my character and the teacher I came to be.
