“An old-fashioned jungle adventure, one with rare immediacy and depth of feeling for the people and creatures [Rosolie] encounters.” —Wall Street Journal

For fans of The Lost City of Z, Walking the Amazon, and Turn Right at Machu Picchu comes naturalist and explorer Paul Rosolie’s extraordinary adventure in the uncharted tributaries of the Western Amazon—a tale of discovery that vividly captures the awe, beauty, and isolation of this endangered land and presents an impassioned call to save it.

In the Madre de Dios—Mother of God—region of Peru, where the Amazon River begins its massive flow, the Andean Mountain cloud forests fall into lowland Amazon Rainforest, creating the most biodiversity-rich place on the planet. In January 2006, when he was just a restless eighteen-year-old hungry for adventure, Paul Rosolie embarked on a journey to the west Amazon that would transform his life.

Venturing alone into some of the most inaccessible reaches of the jungle, he encountered giant snakes, floating forests, isolated tribes untouched by outsiders, prowling jaguars, orphaned baby anteaters, poachers in the black market trade in endangered species, and much more. Yet today, the primordial forests of the Madre de Dios are in danger from developers, oil giants, and gold miners eager to exploit its natural resources.

In Mother of God, this explorer and conservationist relives his amazing odyssey exploring the heart of this wildest place on earth. When he began delving deeper in his search for the secret Eden, spending extended periods in isolated solitude, he found things he never imagined could exist. “Alone and miniscule against a titanic landscape I have seen the depths of the Amazon, the guts of the jungle where no men go, Rosolie writes. “But as the legendary explorer Percy Fawcett warned, ‘the few remaining unknown places of the world exact a price for their secrets.’”

Title: wish everyone would read this
Review: This is so full of information and it is written in such a wonderful way. It reads like a fictional thriller, I found myself not wanting to put it down. I find it absolutely amazing the author had these experiences and can also relate them in written form so well. Reminds me of Tom Brown Jr’s books of nature and spirituality. If you don’t want to take the time to read this, please listen to Paul on podcasts like Lex Fridman and Joe Rogan.

Title: Delightful and beautiful. Not a preachy conservation book
Review: Just finished reading this for the third time. It's delightful, passionate, fascinating and not art all preachy as some books that also have conservation themes can be. It's about the majesty of these wild places. Loved it.

Title: A Wondrous Adventure and Personal Story
Review: I was fascinated by this book, which I read on my Kindle. I was searching for books on Peru, principally those related to pre-Columbian cultures, and found and was hooked by the title, since my wife and I have traveled to Peru three times (and also Ecuador two times), including a couple times in the Amazon region. And the initial reviews enticed me to read this book. The author's descriptions of the Amazon rainforests were at once realistic and poetic, with a very real important emphasis on what this world is doing, and not doing, to destroy, or to allow by apathy the destruction of the essential wholeness of the rainforests, to the world's and not just Peru's great peril. There is no doubt of his devotion to the Amazon and wish to preserve it, including what he is doing now, both by writing the book, and also continuing to help run, with others, including citizens of Peru, the Las Piedras Biodiversity Station, helping to lead its efforts to both study and preserve the region. I especially loved the descriptions of the animals, reptiles and birds of the still-for-now pristine regions of the Madre de Díos that most of us will never see, or unfortunately, ever see again. I also liked the fact that the author was self-deprecating about his adventures, including recognizing where he was perhaps brash and not paying attention to the possible dangers of the situations he was putting himself in. And then there is the interesting back-story of the author's personal and educational development from his days in New York, to his early attempts to establish himself in the Amazon region, but, with his parents help and encouragement, to go to college and complete his education to make himself more valuable in the responsibility he would then assume in Peru. This is absolutely a marvelous book. I would very much like to read whatever his next book might be. And I will no doubt re-read this one soon.

Title: Gorgeous writing of personal accounts!
Review: Passionately and deliberately crafted from Paul himself, I could not put this book down. Ever since I heard all that Paul had to say on Lex Fridman's podcast, I was so moved by him and his passion for the Amazon that I did more research. Found this book, and decided to get it. It's a tad pricey. But if my money somehow makes it to a protection fund for the Amazon through Paul, then take my friggin' money! Some of the ways Paul describes the experiences of [being in] the amazon and the way he looks at the phenomenon and Miracle that is the rainforest have left me speechless. Books don't often do that to me.Buy. This. Book.

Title: Wonderfull- Applies to all of Us
Review: This adventure must be read to believe! I sort of got lost when he went to India, but it does have a purpose. There is not a period of time in which Paul’s purpose is ever lost.Toward the end, I expected to find a deeper connection with some of the wildlife encountered earlier. It is a long book but oh so worthwhile!

Review: Just finished your book and enjoyed it immensely. I see some negative comments and can only chalk it up to a little jealousy. For your next book please shoot for about 500 or 600 pages because this one was over far to soon. Thanks for the great read.

Review: In the tradition of 'Silent Spring' and 'Born Free', 'Mother of God' is a book that plants itself as a classic in environmentalist literature. Written with honest, passionate immediacy and crucial attention to detail, it chronicles the tale of one man and his romancing with the wild, his delights and discoveries, and his ragged warring with forces of destruction that are driving the global biome to the brink of collapse. It is a book I am glad I came across. I would recommend any conscientious human being to read this.Lovers of wildlife have more reason to own a copy of this book. This story is almost a fairy tale in its unbelievableness, and definitely an epic in its magnitude. It is also a tragedy in the scope of its characters, and its singular protagonist - the Amazon itself. Pick this up while there's still time, - while it is still a record of the present and not a vanished past.
