Title: Solid and creative recipes for soup lovers ...
Review: I live in the Pacific NW where our winters aren't particularly frigid but are nonetheless gray, rainy, and chilly. There's nothing like a comforting soup to offset the dreariness of our weather. I have a few "go-to" standard recipes that I make often, but I'm always looking for new creative soup recipes. And so ... I took a chance on Soup & Comfort and opted for the Kindle edition.I'm glad I did.The book contains over 100 soup recipes, plus 20 recipes for salads, sandwiches, and soup toppings. Seriously, there is something for everyone here. There's a good representation of all types of soups: stocks & broths, chilled soups, chowders, bisques, chilis, stews, vegetarian, meat, and pasta. Recipes are labeled as to dietary relevance (gluten-free, vegetarian, paleo, etc.), and some include variations that allow you to tailor the recipe for your particular need. The introduction also contains ideas for substitutions -- very nice touch. The only "negative" I can see is there are very few pictures, so if you're a more "visual" cook, this might not be a great fit. I'm OK with no pictures, though, so no complaints here.As is my usual practice with a new cookbook, I made three recipes from Soup & Comfort. All turned out nicely.Lemon-Scented Orzo & Chicken Soup with Spinach:Good basic chicken soup, loaded with chicken and spinach, with just the right amount of bright lemon flavor. I made this on the stovetop, but there are instructions for preparing it in a slow cooker. Freezes well, too. This is a keeper.Spicy Chicken & Sweet Potato Chowder:Oh, yum! Iâm a sucker for big bold flavors, and this chowder has them in spades. A real âsouthwesternâ feel to it, with fire-roasted green chiles, cumin, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper, along with chicken, red bell pepper, corn kernels, sweet potato, and, of course, chicken. Not labor intensive, either â goes together quickly and also freezes well. Another keeper!Roasted Garlic & 10-Bean Soup with Balsamic Reduction:Iâve been making my own version of a âmulti-beanâ soup for years. You can purchase these dried bean mixtures everywhere it seems, and they usually have 8-15 different varieties of beans and/or peas. The smaller softer beans in the mix will nearly disintegrate while cooking, which naturally thickens the soup, so it really does work. This version is more of an âupscaleâ multi-step variation on that theme. You start with homemade roasted veggie broth and a head of roasted garlic and finish with a syrupy balsamic reduction. The end result is a rich hearty bean soup, thickened by puréeing about half of it in a blender. I like the flavor, but not enough to go through the multiple steps of cooking the beans separately, roast the veggies to make the stock, reducing the balsamic vinegar, etc. every time I want multi-bean soup. This version is good, but my version is a lot less work and produces a comparable result. So there it is -- I'll be trying some of the chilled soups this summer (the White Gazpacho and Cold Peach soups look particularly tempting!). Meanwhile, there are a few more recipes that I think will work well this winter, too. Off to the supermarket ...

Title: Great for experienced cooks with time to cook everything from scratch
Review: It is a really beautiful book! There are some pretty, inspiring pictures in it, and of course everything looks tasty. The book starts out saying where to find the classic soups, vegetarian & vegan, allergy friendly, paleo, low sodium, and the best recipes you can find in the book. Then the table of contents includes Satisfying Soups for Everyone, Stocks, Broths & Clear Soups, Chilled Soups, Pureed Soups, Pasta & Grain Soups, Seafood Soups and Chowders, Meaty Soups, Stews and Chili, Vegetarian Soups, and Salads, Sandwiches and Soup Toppings. The book discussed what equipment to use, pantry items you must have, secrets for salvaging soups, and other helpful info.If you like fast, simple recipes, this book is NOT for you. Most recipes have at least 11 ingredients, if not more. Everything is fresh, from scratch which makes for delicious soup, but also requires a special trip to the store, if you're like me. For example, I don't keep fresh herbs or ginger around unless they are leftovers from a previous recipe, and using the dried spices in the cupboard just isn't the same. Plus there are a few ingredients that I embarrassingly don't know what they are, like tahini and garam masala. The Creamy Tomato Soup needs you to use an immersion blender or pass the ingredients through a china cap, and I don't even know what the heck those items are. Obviously I can google it all, but like I said, if you want quick, easy 5 ingredient soups, then this isn't the right book for you. The description said "Convenient fix-and-forget slow cooker recipes plus handy soup tips to liven leftovers" but they aren't easy to find in the book. You have to flip through and look for a blue box on each recipe page to find the "fix and forget" recipes. So if you love homemade broths with delicious, unique, fancy soups, and you have time to cook them, then this cookbook is totally for you. I had high hopes for this book, because I love fresh natural (not canned) soups! But as a mom of two young children, this book will probably get dusty on my shelf, unfortunately, because a lot of the recipes are too fussy for me. I'm giving it 5 stars though because the description says "No bouillon cubes here!" and they really mean it! If I ever have time to cook completely from scratch, then I plan to use this book. I received this book for free in exchange for my fair and honest and unbiased review.

Title: The soup cookbook for those afraid to try making soup
Review: Soup has always been something that has seemed difficult to me and I've stayed away from even attempting to make it without any good reason. I was offered this Soup & Comfort cookbook in exchange for my honest opinion and realized that I have been avoiding a delicious and easy homemade food genre for far too long! This book introduces you to a variety of styles of soups as well as offering gluten-free options so everyone can enjoy a tasty soup that warms you from the inside out! I found that this soup cookbook was easy to follow, included beautiful photos that gave me a good idea of what I was striving for and featured a wide-variety of flavors. With our temperatures being well below zero right now, my family loves coming home to have a homecooked soup on the table for dinner with a nice crusty bread to warm us all up. The instructions are so simple to follow but the flavors are developed and complex. I am enjoying each one I have tried so far and look forward to cooking my way through this soup cookbook.

Review: I initially borrowed from my library. I enjoyed the book and will use the recipes so I purchased the kindle version. Kindle version is well laid out and had links to recipes so it is quick to navigateOne recipe I have never seen is the Parmesan broth. I have used the same technique to use the rinds as I hate to throw them away. I soak them in cold water and use the broth and the soften rinds in my soups. Adds lots of flavour and the softened rinds melt into the broth.

Review: Ok, so a cookbook on soups isn't going to set the world on fire but I found this at a discounted price and thought I'd give it a whirl especially as I'm trying to eat more cleanly/healthily post Christmas.I am VERY pleasantly surprised - pretty much every recipe sounds tasty, and something I would want to make. The book is broken down into sections: stocks, broths & clear soups, chilled soups, puréed soups, pasta & grain based soups, seafood soups & chowders, meaty soups, stews & chilli, veggie soups & stews then a great selection of salads, sandwiches and soup toppings.Quite often these inexpensive kindle cookbooks fall way short of the mark (and I have dozens and dozens of cookbooks and only the best are in constant use) but I think I'll be using this one a lot.
