Darkness, both literal and psychological, holds its own unique fascination. Despite our fears, or perhaps because of them, listeners have always been drawn to tales of death, terror, madness, and the supernatural, and no more so than today when a wildly imaginative new generation of dark dreamers is carrying on in the tradition of Poe and Lovecraft and King, crafting exquisitely disturbing literary nightmares that gaze without flinching into the abyss - and linger in the mind long after.

Multiple award-winning editor Ellen Datlow knows the darkest corners of fiction and poetry better than most. Once again, she has braved the haunted landscape of modern horror to seek out the most chilling new works by both legendary masters of the genre and fresh young talents. Here are twisted hungers and obsessions, human and otherwise, along with an unsettling variety of spine-tingling fears and fantasies. The cutting edge of horror has never cut deeper than in this comprehensive showcase of the very best the field has to offer. Enter at your own risk.

Title: Awesome
Review: My attention span has gotten so short, I honestly didn't think I was capable of reading a book anymore, as sad as that sounds. I spend so much time jumping from screens to screens of various sizes that it feels strange to sit still for a while and actually read something. This book, with its collection of expertly crafted and compelling stories, eased me back into the practice of daily reading and reminded me why I fell in love with books and storytelling in the first place. What's more, it's a great group of stories for people who love unsettling tales. I discovered some awesome new-to-me authors that I'm tracking down for more of their works now. Overall, it's great entertainment!

Title: A few great stories, a few duds, but overall an entertaining read
Review: I enjoy "best of" anthologies because they give me a chance to read things I may have missed along the way. I know that I will not like everything, as horror is often just a matter of taste. I was particularly pleased to see poetry in the anthology. These were my favorites: Mantis Wives, by Kij Johnson. The anthropologist living in my head was particularly delighted. The Callers by Ramsey Campbell had a new take on old traditions carried forward, seemed an homage to The Lottery and The Wicker Man.Dead Song by Jay Wilburn, surprised me. I liked it in spite of my eye-rolling dismissal of most zombie fiction. I was caught up in the documentary of the music and the regions. The last few paragraphs made me turn the lights on.My favorite poem was Sleeping, I Was Beauty by Sandi Leibowitz. Gorgeous words and images.

Title: I had a hard time understanding the plots. Never had this problem before
Review: I have read all of this series and all the other BEST OF books and this one just wasn't to my tastes. I didn't get a lot of the stories. They weren't scarey or odd to me. I really hope it was just me. Please post your reviews so I'll either feel like a heel or not for complaining. I waited for the book to come out with excitement and was disappointed.

Title: Some good stories, some not so good
Review: I like a good book of short stories, and this is one. Some of them were stellar, and some were not but I think it is worth the read.
